    1:13 - I'd actually argue it's the first time in ages that a small squeeze factor makes sense. 1.33x made a lot of sense when we wanted to convert 4:3 to 16:9, those times are over though. 1.33x on 16:9 always gave that super weird 2,36:1 aspect ratio; and no one who made modern anamorphics (which, I guess, started with the smartphone stuff) adjusted that to anything that made remotely sense. 1.35x however lands you exactly at 2,4:1 when shooting 16:9, which is obviously a more desired outcome.
    That said, even though I'm not a fan of lens-stacking like this, it doees make the Surui line a lot more appealing. Especially compared to the maybe-rear-anamorphic-GreatJoy. Lens length and weight are an issue though; my biggest gripe still is the f/2.8 aperture, even though they are all like that.
    On another note, I'll play the devils advocate: on 16:9, this little adapter grants you something like 2,22:1; which could be considered interesting judging by the 2:1 anamorphic stuff we see on streaming platforms. The format, after all, does grant some benefits especially if all your content will go on the web. And funny enough, my Fotga monitors always had the 1.25x anamorphic setting and I always asked them why they used this instead of something useful; they could see the future back then, haha

  • @mikemcglasson1286

    What I love about this adapter: wonderful anamorphic character when paired with the 1.6x lenses! Constant squeeze! Achieves 2:66:1 aspect ratio without cropping when shooting in 4:3! I can now just push the "cinemascope" button in Davinci Resolve, and my footage is all de-squeezed without math! Focus ring feels good in hand!
    What I really don't like about this adapter: It can produce chromatic aberration which may have no artistic merit in many projects. It's really soft. Sometimes the softness could have a tasteful vintage feel, but I'm concerned it may just come across as kinda dull, wrong, or cheap looking.

      I totally agree. This wouldn't be a look I'd want in almost any of the films I shoot. You could see the massive different when it jumped to the Hateful Eight footage. Like "wow, the footage I'm seeing is crazy blurry" haha. For me it's more distracting than anything it adds unless I was doing a crazy dream sequence.

    Idea for a video:
    Image stabilization in lenses often works by having a floating element nearest to the camera sensor. That floating element is micro adjusted in the opposite direction to counteract the slight camera movements. A much more analog way is to have that floating element be suspended in a flexible corrigated rubber membrane such that it is loose enough that there's some lag time between camera body movements and lens element movement. I remember cell phone cameras used to advertise this back in the day.
    My idea: what if you could take a focal reducer (speed booster) or any kind of lens element that will slightly change the focus angle, and suspend it in an adapter. So you have analog image stabilization .

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
      @AnamorphicOnABudget  2 роки тому +2

      The distance marks on the adapter are *probably* measured from the front of the glass itself, as that's the only way to measure focus for vari-diopter solutions. If they're guessing the size of the lens behind it, the marks can be off by several inches.

    I think the hard part is the narrow DOF, you can too easily go out of focus and that will make you look like a noob if you dont prep enough. Not a run and gun lens for sure, needs a lot of set up, prob gimbal and monitor to boot. It's gonna be heavy.

    Hey Tito! Love this video, it's crazy you released it just now because I was eyeing the adapter just last night. I'm trying to figure out which adapter will offer the most coverage for my 35mm full-frame lens. I don't mind cropping/correcting a little vignetting but would prefer not to crop a ton. You said this one covers 35mm but I wasn't sure if you were on full frame or not? Seems like this one can go the widest vs the great joy and the moment? Does either of those competitive adapters cover 35mm better? Doesn't necessarily have to do open gate but that would be a nice perk!

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
      @AnamorphicOnABudget  2 роки тому

      Hey Kyle! When you say "35mm full frame" are you talking about spherical? If yes, then you should be okay with a little vignette. Some of the Contax test shots used this combination.
      If you mean Sirui's 35mm 1.6X anamorphic full frame, then there's a lot of vignette. There's also a comparison of Sirui's 35mm without and with adapter in this video. :)

      If you don't use the proper spacers at the back, the glass does protrude a little bit past the threads, so you could scratch your lens. But you'd have to be pretty reckless and distracted to not notice the rear of the anamorphic and the front of the spherical glass are grinding against each other.

    • @fellowcitizen

      Good to know. I was thinking of it for 82mm-filter lenses (50-100mmF1.8, 24-70mmF2.8hsm) thinking that lacking spacers would be an advantage, but perhaps not so. Thanks @@AnamorphicOnABudget 💎🦘

    Hey, thanks for the great review! I have a few questions though and was wondering if you (or anyone) could give me your thoughts on this:
    I'm not a big fan of the Sirui look, especially the very strong and somewhat artificial looking flares. This adapter seems to add very little flares though (6:20).
    I thought about getting the Nanomorphs, but the 1.5x is a bit too subtle for my taste. Combining the Nanomorphs with another adapter, like the greatjoy 1,35x or this one would solve this. I wanted to get the amber flare version of the nanomorphs though and was wondering how much the subtle but still visible blue flares would interfere with the amber flaring of the lens itself. Any thoughts on this?

    Hey again Tito! Watching this video again because I'm really tempted by this adapter, my only concern is that I want to use it with my laowa 35mm f.95...which sounds a bit absurd as its super fast. Do you think it would still be acceptably sharp? I generally like a softer vintage look but not so soft it looks out of focus lol

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
      @AnamorphicOnABudget  Рік тому

      If the Laowa itself is sharp enough for your taste, the adapter shouldn't compromise its sharpness TOO MUCH. It'll lose some, and probably make the in-focus areas a bit hazy.

      There is a video here on UA-cam of a direct comparison between the FVD-24A and the Vazen Variable Diopter. Short answer, the FVD-24A was sharper and more contrasty than the Vazen, but the Vazen had less distortion and had slightly wider coverage at infinity (although not at minimum focus). I would buy the Vazen due to the much smaller size. There is also Pooli Focus Module V3, which I haven't seen any reviews of.

      I tried the Iscorama combo with this adapter. While my pre-36 Iscorama covers 50mm (full frame), putting this adapter on top of it adds major vignetting. It's not usable without a major crop. I'm not sure about longer focal lengths. Maybe 75-85mm would work. My pre-36 Iscorama is plastic, so it's hard to screw this adapter on, and it doesn't feel very stable in hand. It would be better to use a 2x projection anamorphic like the Kowa or Isco Ultra Star with a variable diopter.

      You can probably get away with similar results to what I had on my Contax 35 in the tests. :)

    Is there an Anamorphic adapter that doesn't require camera operation in manual focus mode? So basically just put it on and still be able to retain all auto-focus while filming?

    • @thelefthandofcreation1617
      @thelefthandofcreation1617 2 роки тому +2

      I've seen some people claim a measure of success by placing a manual adapter at infinity and letting autofocus on the taking lens work, but I'd imagine any potential efficacy of this would be very conditional on taking lens and focal length.

      Short answer: No.
      Long answer: Anamorphics and sphericals focus in very different ways, so they'd require different mechanics and motors for controlling each block. Check out the Anamorphic Cookbook Module 2 Episode 3 for more info on this!

      The SLR Magic Anamorphot-40 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter (Compact) does exactly that. Working great in AF mode.

    In the adapter brochure it´s says it works with the Sirui M4/3 lenses but given the resulting squeeze factor, does it really works? Have you test the adaptor on them?

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
      @AnamorphicOnABudget  2 роки тому +1

      It does work. But the squeeze will be 1.66X, so good luck desqueezing that. I don't have that set anymore, so I didn't test it.

      If you doing it in post and a Davinci Resolve user. There is actually a simple method that Im shocked no one really tackled in a video before.
      go to the Fusion page.
      Add a Resize node in front of the Media node.
      Click on Change Pixel Aspect.
      Type in the Squeeze factor of the anamorphic lens/ adapter to the X axis box.
      head back over to the edit and you are good to go.

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
      @AnamorphicOnABudget  2 роки тому +2

      The reason no one mentioned it before is because it uses the Fusion tab. It's very unstable just existing. hahahah.
      Jokes aside, I prefer to use the Aspect Ratio calculator, as that helps me with the whole project final size (www.tferradans.com/arcalc/go )

      @@AnamorphicOnABudget That's a great tool and I will send it to my friend who just bought the adapter.
      THe Fusion Method though is definitely the easiest way I found to fix anamorphic mumps.

    Would it be possible to stack two 1.25x adapters on a spherical lens to get a ~1.6x squeeze? What could that possibly look like? 🫣

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
