@@Vicky_Hyenas she didn't kill it, it fell asleep. Most of the smallest ones were falling asleep throughout the video. She did step on them but it was more to hold them back and protect them and very gentle. It's the same with how she wasnt doing damage to the pigeon even though she could have shredded it if she wanted to, owls are extremely smart as well as non-agressive (especially barn owls) and know how much pressure to apply. Accidents can and do happen, but all these babies survived to fledging stage, I haven't kept up since then.
Fun morbid owl fact: Did you know that owls lay their eggs a few days apart rather than all at once like most birds? That's why why the chicks are all different sizes. They do this because if the parent hasn't come back with food (because they can't fly in the rain), then the biggest one can eat the smallest one. Then if they still haven't come back, then he can eat the next smallest one. Edit: They don’t eat their siblings on purpose but rather have shit short distance eyesight. On a normal day, the parent comes back with food and dangles it over the nest for them to eat, and all the chicks rush forward to get the food, with the biggest chick getting the most food and leaving the scraps for the others. Therefore, the biggest chick gets stronger, while the smaller chicks get weaker. (something like only 25% make it through the 1st year). Now they have amazing long-distance vision, but basically no short distance vision so they can’t really see what they’re eating, but they just feel that it’s fluffy (eg. A mouse). So when the day comes that the parents can’t return with food, the chicks still expect food, and the bigger ones feel that there’s something fluffy around him and eats their sibling (thinking it’s the food their parents brought them).
It’s funny how the kid owls just stand straight up in a corner. Like, exactly how people react when a fight happens in a bar. “I’m not involved with this, see my hands”?
It takes a village. The pigeon has no intentions of hurting the babies although they did disturbed them. Despite that a nest was the safest place to lay an egg given the circumstances
My goodness! Owl momma came in with the groceries like "excuse me? You've got the wrong house bish"... That pigeon really tried to wait it out, hopes she'd calm down
@@christoffer4862 🤷♂️ Yeah, I remember the owls were birds of prey, they even had a mouse in their beaks for their kids! I imagine the grown ups should have been way more hardcore.
@@JustDaniel6764 I believe it's because each egg is laid a day apart, meaning they also hatch at different times. So some siblings are older than others. A single day difference can mean a huge size difference between chicks.
Yeah, the small ones usually dont survive because their bigger siblings either steal their food or outright kill them at some point. Atleast in some birds, not sure about barn owls, but seven chicks is a lot, usually two or three survive to leave the nest.
Its basically a survival tactic of mainly predator birds. If there is enough food, all young will survive, but if there isnt, the first one(s) will survive who hatched first in order to guarantee at least one, two or more to survive
The pigeon actually killed one of the baby owls, because while the mother owl was protecting her children, the mother accidently jumped onto a baby owl, after the baby owl was being jumped on, it didnt move at all. I feel bad, it must be traumatizing.

*DARK ENDING* The pigeon son right after he got out from his egg: "HELLO WORLD, wow why you'll faces look so flat......wait hold up why are you guys looking at me like tha-".
@SIDDIQUE INTESAR Actually, I think it's fine. The pigeon might've laid more eggs then we thought/saw earlier. If you take a look at the final second of the video, and analyse the visuals-particularly the area near the bottom right. You can see owlet; whose feet is touching (almost standing upon) an egg-like object. If you pay attention to the toes of the owlet and its placement on the egg. It appears that the egg is still spherical-still intact. As for the other shell-like remains, it is clear that they are broken [in half]. The motion/physics of the aforementioned 'healthy' egg also suggests its survival (during the period of the recording).
When the pigeon first went into the nest and laid the egg it was daytime, it could definitely see it was occupied. The night fight it probably couldn’t see as much though.
@@mrrod3004 The lungs of birds do not inflate and deflate but rather retain a constant volume. Also, the lungs are unidirectionally ventilated rather than having a tidal, bidirectional flow, as in other vertebrates with lungs.
For those wondering why the owls aren't like raining havoc on the pigeon: it's a really confined space, and their first concern is their offsprings, the pigeon doesn't seem really agressive... Owl are not the best fighters, especialy on the ground, they hunt by dropping on their prey with speed, mostly using their ability to see thru the dark, and the fact that their feathers glide thru the air with absolute silence (so it's more like stealth assassination, and not fighting), plus, like all birds, they are really fragile, so fighting to death in a box with a pigeon isn't really what they are looking for.
One of the young was appearantly trampled to death. At 3:43 owl mom stepped on it's head and it didn't get up afterwards. You see some leg movement and after some more kicks it ceases to move at all. So fighting more aggressively would have most likely caused all of her offsprings to die.
Mom looks at that pigeon for a second, gets smacked and then says “you disrespectful little shit, you come into MY HOUSE and scare MY babies and then smack me??!”
Its possible that thos pigeons used to use that nesting spot yearly. They come back and barn owls have moved in. Shes so tired from giving birth she just wants to rest but the owl is attacking her. Crazy how confusing nature can be.

@@benjaminbalila1409 look again. That owl chick is dead the mom launched off of its neck. It did death spasms and everything.
@@joshportie really? I didn't notice
Yeah, it did
Fun morbid owl fact:
Did you know that owls lay their eggs a few days apart rather than all at once like most birds?
That's actually kind of cool in a messed up way that so much planning goes into that
Thank you I was wondering why there was a big size difference in chicks
Why does this reminds me of the novel I’ve read before.

@@WouldntULikeToKnow. oh right, fair enough.
