I couldn't help but laugh everytime the Kestrel spun the block on the Jackdaws. Just popped back onto the screen like a cartoon character and the fight was on *instantly*.
Jackdaws are in the Corvid family. Same as; Ravens, Crows, Rooks, Magpies, Jays, & Nutcrackers. Meaning they are SUPER TOUGH birds. While they may lack talons a Bird of Prey possesses. They make up for in beak strength and stamina. And in my 40yrs of being in the avian field working "hands on" with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey. I can tell you one well placed beak strike from a Jackdaw could be curtains for a Kestrel. If it hits an eye and rips it out or inflicts some other kind of damage it's over. This is why the Kestrel knows to immediately subdue it by getting on top of it and trying to pin it down. The only problem is they are about the same size. So that is easier said than done for the Kestrel. A Kestrel wouldn't stand a chance against a much larger corvid like a Common Raven. Their beaks are EXTREMELY strong and sharp. And they could easily kill a Kestrel. I've seen Ravens killing Osprey nestlings. So these birds are every bit as much a predator as the raptors themselves.
Don't think anything less than an eagle attempts a fully mature raven. They're significantly larger than kestrels and particularly heavily built for a bird

Anyways - Ravens are extraordinary rarely preyed upon by most other birds due to their size, strength, and predatory features. People confuse ravens for lesser corvids, which is the mistake si4632 likely made. Anyways, I never said anything about what CAN kill what, just what DOES kill what. Cats can kill cats, but they almost never kill cats. Orcas can kill people, but don't do so in the wild. Almost like we can just learn things instead of of pretending a position of failed reading comprehension is the smart take 😅👍

They don't need to have a "thrashing" when that was the Kestrels nesting box. Kestrels use the same box each year like Hawks and Eagles reuse the same nest. Those Jackdaws only got kicked out, they're smart birds they found a suitable spot for their new nest.
