Compressors do not increase the volume as it gets quieter. They have two parts to them: They reduce the volume of signals that go over a set threshold (e.g. -10db) and a gain boost. In other words, compressors reduce the overall dynamic range of your instrument and boost the signal, which makes your louder sounds quieter and your quieter sounds louder.
DUDE ...GREAT VIDEO... ONE SUGGESTION TO REDUCE YOUR HUM... USE A BOSS NOISE SUPPRESSOR(AROUND $100.00) IN THE CIRCUIT, THEN YOU CAN SPLIT YOUR OVERDRIVE CIRCUIT WHICH IS NOISY AND LEAVE THE CLEAN CIRCUIT ALONE... GOOD PLAYING AND GOOD FEEL
That delay pedal is a treat. I use a Boss DD5 along with a Digitech 2000...old gear I know..creaking a bit. I suppose you get to know what you have and get what you think is the best out of it and become a bit blinkered. Phase,flange,chorus,vibe....they create an atmosphere, a warp. Compression and Gate can really have an effect on a players' style if used properly. Sometimes a guitar is just a guitar...
I’ve been chasing Gilmour’s tone for about two years now. It resulted in me building my own pedalboard, loosely based on his “Pulse” rig, but on a tight budget. The Electric Mistress Deluxe is a great flanger, and a must for the tones off of “The Wall”. EHX makes a few current variations, but none are as good as the big box. There is thankfully a small, and cheap, solution: the Mooer E Lady. It’s a micro sized pedal, and it absolutely nails the old Mistress tones. It’s also inexpensive (well under $100; I got mine for $40).
Superb Video.. I landed here researching the tc delay... Now i'm definitely getting one... PLUS.. all the other pedals you demo'd... Thank you for sharing.. the best gear demo I have seen on youtube to date !!..
I read an interview with Gilmour in the 80's and he said that he gets his sustain out of sheer volume - he turns the amp up almost to where it starts to feed back. He didn't mention any of his pedals, but he made it a point to mention the loudness.
He uses old Hiwatts which are insanely loud amps with a ton of headroom. But he doesn’t normally push his amps into overdrive. He runs his amps very clean though and gets his drive from pedals
Own a BK, had a OCD v4, at low gain settings it was just spot on beautiful sustain and cleanish boost. Harder levels make the OCD more driven and the Butler more fuzzed out.
Hi, Thanks for the great rundown on an affordable set up. If you fully shield your guitar with double conductive copper and earth to the sheilding from the trem claw and volume pot casing and hold your guitar perpendicular to the floor you will drastically reduce single coil hum to barely noticeable. Cheers.
I just want to agree with the top comment made by iammrguitar, this is by far the best video for those looking for "the Gilmour" sound. I know I can never hope to play like him but I can sound great being crap
Nicely done demonstration. Gilmour is one of my all time favorites. For those looking to save some cash, Joyo makes a great sounding pedal that is as close to the OCD as it gets called the Ultimate Drive, and its $40 brand new.
Great Video! Now I truly understand what "Tone is in your fingers" really means. You could get a pretty good sound with just a dry tone, but the effects just make it that much more "Gimour".
Just nit-picking here, but a compressor doesn't actually BOOST the quieter parts of a note. What it does is LOWER the peaks of a note, effectively "squashing" the note and bringing the quiet and loud parts of a note closer together (hence, compression). Since the peak level is now lower, the overall level of the signal can be raised with gain. The note SEEMS to grow as the compression releases, allowing the trail to come out full volume.
I have a Mistress 'one of the older ones without the dot on the I' and a modified Big muff and I can get some good Gilmou,r and Hendrix, sounds with just those 2 and a strat. There is a guy on ebay that modifys the Big Muffs to the vintage circuitry of the 60's,70s, he also sells em. They are for distortion, and very versatile.
It's R. K. Butler , NOT ' BK ' He is the 80's wonderkind electrical engineering tekkie behind 'Real Tube", 'Blue Tube', and the famous 'Tube Works' product lines. Formerly produced in Denver, Colorado, & moving around the Western US , partnering with the good peeps @ Genz-Benz in Arizona for a development sojourn, and currently chairing Butler Audio, Inc. Many of his famous goodies are available directly on-line I'm happy to still have a 1-12 combo with his Mos-FET amp design. Sweet !
I currently don't have a deja-vibe and the closest would be my MXR EVH Phase 90 ... will that do at a low setting or would you still recommend a flanger or vibe pedal. Also, in your set up ... would you use the Electric Mistress and Deja-Vice together or one only at a time depending on what the tone you want is. I se a Tonebone Trimode and have the phase 90 dedicated to the line 2 output so it comes on only when the second or my "lead" '2'' channel is activated. I appreciate your time
I'm digging this, but in my set up, and of course I'm not really trying to sound like David Gilmour, but he is one of my biggest inspirations, anyway I am using an OCD, also have a Lovepedal super lead, but the nicest two pedals that add to my semi gilmour sound, is the blackout effectors musket fuzz, I can get any era of the big muff, out of it. The other pedal is, the Catalinbread Echorec, it's based on the Benson echorec, obviously not as cool as the old school magnetic drum version but it is very close for something you would want to take on tour! Anyway thanks for making this video, it's always interesting to see someone else's take.
👍👍👍👍nor annoying hum -- and adds volume without sounding like total crap! Compressors are absolutely ESSENTIAL!!! You'll wonder how you ever lived without them.
As a rule of thumb, OCD's with red LED's are version 4. Until version 4 they had blue LED's, although some very early v4's do have blue LED's. The v4 also has different graphics with arrows around the knobs and so on.
Thanks, i just have got a : Nova Delay, Deja Vine, Bass Big Muff, Soul fool, Mistress,Behriger vintaga Phase, Trio+, Mojomojo, Tc Hall and Chorus, mm. And now i just have to learn, to play Pink Floyd. Startet on Numb. Just played clasisk guitar , and electric guitar is very difrent. Erik Denmark 😉❤️👍🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
Most working guitarists have to play covers, and when you play a relatively famous song people want it to sound like what they know off the record. that's why there are so many videos with people showing how to get Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Hendrix tones.
@SurfGreenStrato i know what u mean buddy, i meant no attack. offcourse its a personal preference.. i guess its what our ears atune to and like a little bit more to another...but in the end of the day, both players are fantastic,... i can listen to both for hours and hours
I use my charvel pro mod with either the split nut humbucker or split bridge humbucker. I turn up my delay to max on my fly 3 by blackstar. That sounds pretty damn Gilmour!!
I'm wondering if the fulltone was replaced with a muff deluxe (it emulates the rams head and triangle pretty closely) you think there would be much of a change in the sound?
I have a stereo electric mistress with chorus and flanger built in and I think it does a great job combining the sounds you are getting with the deja vu and the deluxe mistress and it's cheaper
Great work around regardless of what is or isn't. In the end it doesn't matter because you're duplicating a Gilmour tone so accurately. I'm of the opinion that it doesn't matter how you get there if you can find the right way for you. Thanks for an amazing demo of finding ones way!
I forgot to mention how very cool of you it to recommend Gilmourish.com! I've been following the site for a few years & is an amazing resource for all things Gilmour. Bjorn has been a huge help for me and has kept me from wasting a ton of time & money! The added bonus is that they've *_never_* spammed me nor does Bjorn try to sell you anything, he's apparently in it just for the love of helping other Gilmour freaks as myself!
I'm using my Zoom G3n for the modulation effects and I have that running through the fx loop on my Marshall DSL40C but instead of a Big Muff I'm using A Dunlop Band of Gypsies Fuzz Face. Not spot on accurate but it works just fine untill I buy a big muff any ways.
Wow blown away with the pedal knowhow in this video...just when i was losing interest in pedal works...one question when you say a pedal comes before another ..is that relative to the guitar or amp??
Most people count their effects devices starting with the guitar, which is the signal source. There's also an effects loop on more advanced amplifiers that is often used to add in EQ or modulation. You can even add a volume pedal to the loop and use it as a master volume on an amp that doesn't have a master volume.
@pok0000 You can get the nova repeater for 150$ it has less functions, but the essential ones are still there. I got it for 120$ on e bay and it is fantastic. You can nail run like hell easily.
did anyone get an answer as to what amp was being used on this tutorial and what the settings were?? I am sure this was not just plugged into a direct box and into the camera/mixing board. No "King of tone" would do that ;)
Didn't read but sounds like A Marshall. I use a Super Bass (orig. '69) and get this clean tone with my customshop Strat. The overdrive too with The Rover (sort of pre amp). But anyway, i think it's a Marshall.
Hey, Has anyone checked out the WIIO from Catalinbread. It is a pedal giving you the sound of a Hiwatt stack... The kind Gilmour used. Anyone know if this actually gives good gilmour tones?
Been studying his tone for years, and I must say, for a practical real world set-up and clear direction you really nailed the basics well.
Danthehorse
I agree with Dan. Having watched many vids online, you really nail the compressor trick David uses.
Jeff....your run through was a joy to listen to.....you've nailed some iconic tones at OUR prices.....thanks....👍
as a drummer i dig this...respect mucho for the guitar player and his toys!
This is the clearest demonstration and probably the leanest. Few moving parts with your approach. Thank you.
Thanks Guys! Glad you like it. The Flanger is an Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress.
LOVED THIS. way better than ANY gear video talking about gilmour
Great job!! Really! This the type of video that guitarists need. Well paced, articulate and effective.
Thank you!
Thanks, I honestly knew nothing about compressors so I've been doing research, but want as many opinions as possible!
If only every lesson/review on youtube was done this well....... Killer job my friend. Thanks so much.
I'm impressed with the sound of the Electric Mistress
That delay pedal is a treat. I use a Boss DD5 along with a Digitech 2000...old gear I know..creaking a bit. Great vid. Love the overall tones. You could add a Fuzz Face for pre 75 sounds and a Big Muff for post.
Love this, thanks for taking the time to upload.

I'am watching this video over and over again. Very useful and nice done! Thx!!))
Very nice and simple demonstartion without getting to fancy, very helpful, thanks!
Glad you guys enjoyed it! Thanks!
Excellent video, you nailed the Gilmour tone alright!
not really
Best pedal video I have seen... thanks
Have been looking for my own tone, This video is a great inspiration.
Thanks
Keep Posting.
When I find my tone will share here.
Superb Video.. I landed here researching the tc delay... Now i'm definitely getting one... PLUS.. all the other pedals you demo'd... Thank you for sharing.. the best gear demo I have seen on youtube to date !!..
Great walkthrough of the dotted eighths.
I read an interview with Gilmour in the 80's and he said that he gets his sustain out of sheer volume - he turns the amp up almost to where it starts to feed back. He didn't mention any of his pedals, but he made it a point to mention the loudness.
Ya i remember reading the same thing lately. Control came from alot of muting to stop feed back.

Great video. Nice and detailed with lots of samples. Much appreciated!

That was very very illustrative. Great info. Thank you

i wanted to start singing at 4.35 "YOU GOT TO BE CRAZY!!"lol
Great Video! Now I truly understand what "Tone is in your fingers" really means. You could get a pretty good sound with just a dry tone, but the effects just make it that much more "Gimour".
wow , you really nailed the tone on part 2!
Nice job with the explanations and all. Thanks for the vid! Cheers!
I enjoyed this post - thanks!
Good, clear vid, thx. Keep them coming.
Really enjoyed the way you explained this. Im new to effects, especially delay. Thank you.
A very intelligent demo !
I been using a Boss compressor/ substainer for 'bout 10 yrs. now. Works great with out any problems. Gigging that's saying a lot.....
Just nit-picking here, but a compressor doesn't actually BOOST the quieter parts of a note. Since the peak level is now lower, the overall level of the signal can be raised with gain. The note SEEMS to grow as the compression releases, allowing the trail to come out full volume.
Kudos man! This is quite near his tone! But i believe he also used a Proco RAT to get his lead tones.
Nice lesson and nice chops dude!
Xotic BB is also a great overdrive for these tones... great vid !
I have a Mistress 'one of the older ones without the dot on the I' and a modified Big muff and I can get some good Gilmou,r and Hendrix, sounds with just those 2 and a strat. dude when he did the run like hell type riff at the end, like i just uncontrollably started dancing.

Totally agree - the Musket is one of the finest pedals out there :)
is the deja vibe a phaser or flanger because it encompasses the breathe tone perfectly
yep! just installed em! amazing!
The amp was a Mesa Lone Star!
It may also help to use a rotary speaker or a rotary effect because he uses rotating speakers driven by hiwatt heads speaker also
Get a Boss compressor, no buzz
👍👍👍👍nor annoying hum -- and adds volume without sounding like total crap! Compressors are absolutely ESSENTIAL!!! You'll wonder how you ever lived without them.
Awesome video thanks

Great simple gear to achieve some Gilmour tones.
Nice work.

Well I have an ocd and many muff variants and the ocd is not going to get you quite the sustain or the tone.
But it still sounds pretty cool.
very nice video !
thanks a lot
To get his pulse era tone, take all this and add a set of Emg-SA pickups to it.
very nice mate !!!
Can you use a phaser in place of the deja vibe?
Yes you can. It´s definitly not the same but trust me, no one in audience would hear that.
I actually use a phase 90 with a Longamp Roxanne (electric mistress clone) for vibe sounds and it sounds really good
GREAT SOUND! THANX
I'm wondering if the fulltone was replaced with a muff deluxe (it emulates the rams head and triangle pretty closely) you think there would be much of a change in the sound?

Hey man, cool review.
One question, how come the dynacomp is not loud or creating white noise?
Thanks
Dan
I'm using my Zoom G3n for the modulation effects and I have that running through the fx loop on my Marshall DSL40C but instead of a Big Muff I'm using A Dunlop Band of Gypsies Fuzz Face. Not spot on accurate but it works just fine untill I buy a big muff any ways.

@juggHERnutt U can get it at guitarcenter, musicians friend or where ever else sells it, theres no BEST place to get it, its about $250
great ! well done !
I was looking at compressors, should the Dyna Comp be the one I go for?
You know if you are trying to demo gilmour.. may help to play his well known licks.. but good demo of the pedals!
4:40 , Dogs intro?
Damn, now I gotta save up and get these pedals! Haha amazing sound
Do you know of an analog delay that does what the Nova delay does when it comes to the slapback dotted eighth note
did anyone get an answer as to what amp was being used on this tutorial and what the settings were?? I am sure this was not just plugged into a direct box and into the camera/mixing board. No "King of tone" would do that ;)

good video!! What was that chord progression that begins at 03:43 when you are demoing the Deja Vibe?
just a great vid
these guys have great tone. that being said, there is only one king of tone. Mr. Andy Timmons
Superb video. Thanks for sharing. :-)
The only thing you are missing is a muff fuzz. Nice tones for sure though. Thanks for the cool video.
question: how come didn't you make a video on Eric Johnson? He is THE king tone in my opinion. Thx!
@atomikhound the compressor alongside of the OCD makes it hum more?
Whats the deja vibe? Type of chorus?
Hey,
Has anyone checked out the WIIO from Catalinbread. It is a pedal giving you the sound of a Hiwatt stack... The kind Gilmour used. Anyone know if this actually gives good gilmour tones?
