In Pokémon Black & White’s defense They were in development as early as 2008 and released in 2010 in Japan. It only released that late everywhere else.

@@pokemonduckgame development takes time dude, they aren’t lazy the creators just had other stuff to do. You’re assuming developers are obligated immediately to make a game and release it when the console launches, but even still…. GAME DEVELOPMENT TAKES TIME MORON. You forget that X and Y had a tight development time going from 2D to 3D, with over 600 Pokemon that needed to be remodelled for that new game. Which is funny cuz the game began development in 2010, right after Pokemon black and white was released, while they also made Black2/White2 at the same time. So to say they’re lazy is ignorant.
The last 3+ years of each handheld's era basically made it's best content all the time. The launch year was always "look at what we did on a handheld!!" And then the following years were everyone actually figuring out what the heck they were doing with the hardware
The final years of both the DS and the Wii from around 2010 - 2013 are incredibly nostalgic for me. I was just getting into gaming as a 5/6 year old in 2010/11 and despite both consoles being relatively old by that point, everyone I knew still adored them as if they were brand new. All my friends at school had DSis since they were still pretty popular around then and I even ended up getting a DS Lite for Christmas in 2011 after begging my mum for a 3DS but I was just happy to finally have my own console and be able to join in on the fun with my friends.
I don't understand why anyone would be angry or even annoyed at a company releasing games on their old platform. Black and White must have been in development long before the 3ds had stable hardware and dev kits. Black and white 2 are just sequels to the original games on the same engine. Games take a long time to develop and it doesn't make sense to switch engines an scrap your work if the game you're working on is already deep into development.
Ya I'm much more surprised by how long it took them to bring pokemon to Switch, considering that thing was selling like hotcakes. I guess they didn't need a system seller though, and they could reuse the X and Y engine to keep costs down.
That’s because they don’t care. These people just consume and complain, never getting out of their ignorant headspace to realize game development happens early (and most of the times is long) and also that there are certain factors that cause these situations to happen. They say “game freak is lazy” but in truth black and white was in development since 2008, and even though the 3DS was announced before the game came out, they couldn’t just spend two years doing nothing and figuring out how the 3DS hardware worked, for us to wait with what would possibly be a lacklustre product :/

The DS having a better lineup in 2011 than the 3DS is hilarious and kinda vindicating as a kid who kept playing their DS well into 2012. The 3DS launch really did not make that system look appealing back then.

I’ve actually been having a huge phase with my grandpa’s ds lite he gave me a few years back, I grew up on the Wii and original 3ds so I never really got into the ds lite plus I’m pretty sure I had the Switch at that point… but recently I have been watching a lot of content about the 3ds, ds and gba games and have been really missing the straightforward utility and charm of them. I really try to play on console over pc emulation as much as possible as I just enjoy the experience more, but unfortunately my original 3ds won’t charge and Nintendo won’t fix that. And so i picked up my Lite, definitely didn’t purchase a 208 game cartridge off of Amazon (not an r4 sry) and I have been loving it. Clocking in double digit hours on a load of games over the last 1-2 months. They’re is just something about that feels so right lol.

Pretty sure the ultimate setup for handheld emulation is a new 3/2DS XL w custom firmware and/or flash cart because it has the most power with the ds form factor and is backward compatible up to GBA. Dsi can’t play any 3ds native games either since its previous gen
I bought a DStwo back in 2015 and to this day, "ALEX RIDER STORMBREAKER" stands atop my most played games according to my 3DS activity log. First beat a bunch of GBA and DS games that way, the GBA emulation was pretty shoddy but good enough.

Mind you, recebt leaks have revealed that Gamefreak had PLAYABLE BUILDS of XY dating back to BEFORE black and white actually launched outside of Japan. And, furthermore, it confirmed that most of the Pokèmon in Gen 6 were scrapped from Black and White 2, which was pushed out the door and then dumped immediately for Gen 7 because the "fans" complained about there being no Kanto pokemon before the post game. Let me repeat, not just "no pre-Gen 5 pokemon" not KANTO pokemon.
God that recap of the early months of the 3DS took me back. I have both Steel Diver and the Tom Clancy one, both games I would never have looked at otherwise.
When the 3DS came out in Australia it was priced at AU$350. The Australian dollar was also at parity with the US dollar at the time. No wonder my parents bought me a DSi instead in March of 2011. Good thing my dumb kid brain hadn't realised that the 3DS existed yet.
I appreciate Nintendo always giving reasons for you to own the previous and latest consoles, whether it’s the control scheme being different or purely aesthetic reasons
I was quite young, so I had no consciousness about when all these games released. I remember playing Pokemon Conquest on my DS lite but I thought it was before the 3DS, thats amazing.
I played pokemon rumble blast so much when I just got my 3ds. I remember I got it before the price cut. Not even a big pokemon fan, never have been but that game ruled.
Love my n3ds XL and have been loving it for years. Theres some quirk that always brings me back to it its gotta be the 3d affect. With the addition of isp screens makes games look so crisp and the graphics still hold their own. Shin Megami Tensai's soundtrack and atmosphere is just peak IMO too. I love it so so much. Mine is plain but some of the special editions go hard too
The 3DS is honestly my favourite console of all time. The gimmick is neat, but is completely unintrusive and they didn't focus on it too hard like the Switch. People who liked it could use it all they want, and people who didn't could pretend it didn't exist.
Mass Attack got one of the best Kirby soundtracks, which is saying A LOT considering how every Kirby soundtrack is amazing, and that's coming from someone who didn't play this game when I was young, so no nostalgia involved. It's such an underrated soundtrack that more people should check out, composed entirely by the Mother 3 composer, Shogo Sakai.
I remember when the 3DS came out and NOBODY wanted anything to do with it. All of my friends couldn’t care less. Boy were they wrong when games like Mario Kart 7 and Smash 3DS came out.
13:22 I got my original 3DS at the full retail price, and rolled the dice on when Nintendo's price cut would kick in. It did shortly afterwards so my Best Buy store did a price match, and I also got the free games from Nintendo and my Ambassador Certificate. It's still on my New 3DS, I transferred it over.
I mean, tbh, new games on the old systems is normal for other companies too just not Nintendo's home consoles (after SNES at least). Every Playstation is somewhat alive long after the next one comes out, I think notable PS4 releases from big companies are STILL happening now.
3ds/ds isn't really a good comparison to ps4/ps5, because a game has to have a massive budget to even require using the ps5's specs compared to ps4. though the conundrum is similar because the 3ds's improvements are mostly shown thru 3d games so if you're making a 2d sprite based game it will just work on the ds anyway but, yeah. one thing scott seems to overlook in a lot of these videos is that nintendo is considering an entire market, not just people who keep up with the news. I didn't know about the DS till the DS lite, just like scott and I'm sure it was the same for the 3ds for a lot of people for awhile too

This is a funny conversation to have. We still see new videogames for the Atari 2600. I like the idea of consoles and handhelds that never go away.
It stills baffles me the 3DS was 240p. And yet games still looked good.
Thank GOD BnW werent 3ds games... so beautiful, so much style. the last pokemon games to ever push a system to its limits...
Are you trying to insult the 3ds?!
No 3dsfan2002, I’m insulting the Pokémon company and their inability to care to catch up to modern systems
@@3dsfan2002 u say that as if u own the nintendo company😭
@@3dsfan2002the name checks out
I definitely feel like gen5 felt the most vibrant and colourful. With it having full pokemon animations in battles, and lots of side content… anyone ever used entralink btw?
MASS ATTACK HAD THE BEST SUBGAMES IN THE SERIES!!
I remember getting Kirby Mass Attack in Christmas of 2012 for my 3DS, Daroach actually comments on how he wishes he had "one of those new 3DS systems" if you keep asking him for hints
It does help having some new games on old hardware when a new console comes out because sometimes you can't afford the new one or have to wait for a sale to get it for christmas
Driftveil City is such a bop
I got an idea for an episode for you: when I was a kid my parents bought a Samsung 3D TV. It came with a DVD toystory game that worked with the special 3D glasses. Figured you'd like looking into that. Have fun Scott!
"150 million install base, who's still playing their DS at this point" Well, going by B2/W2 sales numbers, about 8.52 million people. Give or take.
The DS having a better lineup in 2011 than the 3DS is hilarious and kinda vindicating as a kid who kept playing their DS well into 2012. The 3DS launch really did not make that system look appealing back then.
3ds now is better than the ds
Why do people have such a hate b*ner for anything 3DS and Wii U related? What's that? It's the 3DS? Well that means the launch lineup is the WORST EVUH! This is the start of the STINKEE BLAND ERA OF MARIO!!1!
Let's just forget Pilotwings and Super Monkey Ball 3D Existed
Let's also forget NSMB2, Sonic Generations and Lost World, Mario and Sonic Rio 2016, NFS The Run, etc.
But guys, it's not what I grew up with and the consoles failed due to poor marketing so it's terrible, stinky and generic and these games killed their franchises!!1!
Hate to break it to you but Yoshi Touch and Go is FAR worse than any of the games i mentioned
@@cakelayer I’m literally someone who thinks 3ds Mario and Pokemon are goat/overhated, and what you comment, is actually what you think of the system or what you assume why others give 3ds hate?
3DS launch year was so good: Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Sonic Generations, Tekken, Dead or Alive, Super Street Fighter 4, Ridge Racer and Shinobi
@@kingstarscream320well, both Marios came in the holidays, so for the longest time there were only N64 remakes of StarFox and Zelda, and some 3rd party stuff
SCOTT TALKED ABOUT MASS ATTACK LESGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Does you 3ds refuse to charge because the battery is dead? If yes, replacement are pretty cheap.
@@emperormegaman3856 really? Thanks, maybe that’s it, I’ll look into it 🙂
@@Hoodles321 FYI Nintendo still sells official batteries on their site. I checked the other day, looks like they're not really restocking them quick but I don't think they've entirely taken them down yet, so that's probably the best source. Would recommend since I replaced my PSP's battery with a supposedly reputable third-party replacement and I'm still not sure if the battery's good or not or if that's just the PSP battery life lol.
ds + flash cart = infinite entertainment
DSi Xl with custom firmware is the way to go these days. No need for a flash cart at all.
no?
Pretty sure the ultimate setup for handheld emulation is a new 3/2DS XL w custom firmware and/or flash cart because it has the most power with the ds form factor and is backward compatible up to GBA. Dsi can’t play any 3ds native games either since its previous gen
I bought a DStwo back in 2015 and to this day, "ALEX RIDER STORMBREAKER" stands atop my most played games according to my 3DS activity log. First beat a bunch of GBA and DS games that way, the GBA emulation was pretty shoddy but good enough.
@@xMaGuSx888 nice, I should learn more about modding stuff
I still have a DS phat... they feel so much better to hold versus the DS Lite (which I also have, I just need to put it in a new shell). I also don't like the GBA game sticking out the DS Lite, but the DS phat allows it to sit flush
I kinda like the bluish tint and scanlines on the screen too.
I think this is the most I've ever seen Scott talk about pokemon, say zip-lash if you're being held hostage.
As a Pokemon fan who’s first game was Blue Version, I’m so damn tired of Gen 1 pandering
The Gen 6 Pokemon lineup being intended for B2/W2 was quickly proven to be one of the false leaks that got mixed in with the real ones
God that recap of the early months of the 3DS took me back. I have both Steel Diver and the Tom Clancy one, both games I would never have looked at otherwise.
FOSSIL FIGHTERS MENTION! You gotta play Fossil Fighters
15:56 DUDE FOSSIL FIGHTERS 1 and 2 IS SO GOOD YOU HAVE TO MAKE VIDEOS ON THEM
I remember that Golden Sun 3 was released during the end of the DS.
3:24 Cooking what?
When the 3DS came out in Australia it was priced at AU$350. The Australian dollar was also at parity with the US dollar at the time. No wonder my parents bought me a DSi instead in March of 2011. Good thing my dumb kid brain hadn't realised that the 3DS existed yet.
Holy moly
i always love when scott rightfully shits on the bad pokemon games and his comments become hell
I appreciate your videos Scott’s Stash
help scott you just killed me with the soundtrack i died of memory overload
I’m looking into making my own DS games I hope the modding community can keep it alive for years to come
I appreciate Nintendo always giving reasons for you to own the previous and latest consoles, whether it’s the control scheme being different or purely aesthetic reasons
17:38 can we just talk about that throw
I was quite young, so I had no consciousness about when all these games released. I remember playing Pokemon Conquest on my DS lite but I thought it was before the 3DS, thats amazing.
"What about that video description? Doesn't it say 'Die, DS, Die'?"
"No, that's German....for 'The DS, the'."
Scott saying "BUDDY" will never get old to me..
“I don’t hear anyone talking about Fossil Fighters” Jaiden Animations erasure.
I loved kirby mass attack so much. You have no idea how much that game means to me.
I love hearing Scott acknowledge Fossil Fighters. We dont talk about Frontiers, but the first two on DS are criminally underrated.
Makes y’ll want to apologize to 3ds Mario and 3ds Pokemon
I mean, tbh, new games on the old systems is normal for other companies too just not Nintendo's home consoles (after SNES at least). Every Playstation is somewhat alive long after the next one comes out, I think notable PS4 releases from big companies are STILL happening now.
The Wii also took forever to truly die
3ds/ds isn't really a good comparison to ps4/ps5, because a game has to have a massive budget to even require using the ps5's specs compared to ps4. though the conundrum is similar because the 3ds's improvements are mostly shown thru 3d games so if you're making a 2d sprite based game it will just work on the ds anyway
but, yeah. one thing scott seems to overlook in a lot of these videos is that nintendo is considering an entire market, not just people who keep up with the news. I didn't know about the DS till the DS lite, just like scott and I'm sure it was the same for the 3ds for a lot of people for awhile too
@@TheRenegade... that was just for the Just Dance games. Wii stopped receiving new major releases in summer 2012 which was nearly half a year before the Wii U launched.
One other late DS release was Okamiden, around the same time as Pokemon Black and White. The Okami sequel(?). I distinctly remember hating how it looked on 3DS and going back to my DSi to keep playing it, though the circle pad was kinda nice for it.
Tbf pokemon black and white originally came out in September 2010 but only in japan, they came to everywhere else in march 2011
3:00 2004 never existed… *disintegrates*
0:33 "Many of them are seen as starter video game consoles for Jungians out there."
The starter video game console for Freudians? The Dreamcast

i remember this, i spent the whole time trying to load 3ds games on my flashcart to no avail. i was too young to get how it worked
Nintendo's entire handheld lineup are my favorite consoles of all time. I'm glad they let them live on as long as they did. The switch is amazing, and I love it, but I miss having a "secondary system" that was tiny and had its entire own library
The DS: Kill me.
Nintendo: Later…
I still have my small light blue DSi and I found both of my sisters old DS Phats back in June along with their old games and I had been collecting primarily first party DS games for the last few months that I never got to actually play
So happy I subbed to all your channels it helps me recognize the childhood I lost
ohhh my goodness the game Ive become obsessed with recently was Kirby Mass Attack and then bam, the game on the thumbnail.
Okamiden it’s one of the best games on the DS.
Came out in 2010 in Japan and in 2011 elsewhere.
Next “the Nintendo switch just wouldn’t die”
Hot take: Nintendo supporting their old consoles at the same time as their recently released consoles was a good thing actually.
Gen 3 games on the DS and Gen 5 games on the 3DS are cool ideas for videos.
THE DSI was a big cultural moment scott
thanks scott
I got my Gameboy Color, Advance, Advance SP, Nintendo DS, and New Nintendo 3DS at pawn shops throughout my life. And the great thing is, I still have all of them.
The way I remember I got my 3ds in christmas 2011 is that free zelda four swords promo
Kirby Mass Attack is such a good game, very happy seeing it get some form of recognition, even if it's in the sense of "oh my god they released _another_ Kirby game for the DS after the 3DS launched"
I think Scott underestimates how many people hang on to the old hardware for as long as they can, for financial reasons or otherwise. For as long as I've been playing games, I've never been able to afford upgrades immediately. I welcome the releases for old hardware lol
Pokemon black and white released in Japan Sept of 2010
So it wasn't ever planned as a potential 3DS game
Same thing happened before with pokemon emerald that came on in japan 2004 but NA 2005
And black 2 and white 2 are more to not separate the sequels into different consoles
They did it with ultra sun and ultra moon after
Right out of highschool in 2012 I got a purple 3ds and rumble blast it was mid, but 10 years later I got back into it and i can say I do enjoy rumble blast casually! Hahah
Man I always wanted that midnight purple 3ds but couldn’t afford it at the time. It’s such a nice color. Now they have the Galaxy new 3ds xl which is like a follow up to the midnight purple 3ds and I’ve been wanting that too even though I already have a N3ds
kirby mass attack was a good game really good music and it was fun
Mass Attack was the first and last kirby game i played. solid game
