I laughed out loud when you very lovingly demonstrated the binaural microphone. I'm going to go take a shower, now. lol
You will never be truly clean again
Great demonstration. Sounds so good with headphones. Must have been a lot of work making and editing this video. Thank you! Liked and subbed 👍
Great content Colin, thanks pal 👍.
Okay from this point in my life I will not be satisfied if there will not be asmr gear reviews
Put googly eyes on the microphone.
you deserve a raise
This is why I love CS Guitars; is not just about the guitars, amps or effects, but everything in between and behind the scenes. Thanks Colin, you've smashed it again, great content.
I'm a big fan of how it all works. Science and technology are a lot of fun, but when they are used for creating interesting sounds, that's when they're at their coolest.

I kind of regret not doing more ASMR with that microphone before shipping it back. I might have a go at building one myself, after looking inside it they aren't all that complicated.

@@roboeel New ehx product idea: The Ear Muff©️
As far as modeling devices go, these headphones sound remarkably “analog.” There’s a specific quality to tube distortion that is hard to describe, but these headphones do it as well or better than anything else I’ve tried. I have a Helix Floor and as much as I hate to admit it, there’s something about these headphones that makes them “feel” and sound more realistic to me. It might be that they are simulating a cab in a room instead of a mic’d cab as all other modeling devices do. The feel, dynamics and immediacy with these headphones is amazing.

Then you know my struggle in making this video haha
@@ScienceofLoud Haha - an inside joke for those of us who grew up in Scotland!
There should be a health warning to "remove headphones before the last 10 seconds". It was just like the last slow dance at the school disco.
That "ASMR" was really uncomfortable.
I got a pair of these and they are fantastic tool to study at every hour of the day/night. You can also plug the wireless jack to the out of a multi fx/pedalboard and just run the flat response amp in the headphones using your own effects, and just the cab sim from the waza air headphones.
Love it too !
My only problem with these headphones? My old man stole them from me... My only beef is they should have come with a case considering what they are and their target market.
A custom case would be a solid addition, especially as people would want to travel with them.
Even a drawstring bag with the option of buying an add on hard case would be sufficient.
When Andertons reviewed them several months back, they found that you can connect the transmitter to the output of your pedal board allowing you to use the majority of your own FX
That's exactly how I managed to reamp all these guitar tracks back into the headphones for audio capture.
Guitar > DI > Interface > Reamp > Transmitter > Waza > 3DIO > Interface.
But then I ran into the problem of the transmitter shutting off after 30 seconds of no movement and I had to search the settings to have it never turn off.
I probably should have made more noise about that in the video.
NOTIFICATION SQUAAAAAAADDDDD
SQUAD!
Uncomfortably amused. I suspect I enjoyed this a bit too much :P
That's the reaction I was hoping for.
Forget the sound and the app and all that - they sound great.
I can now play “anywhere” at anytime, I’m not constrained by the headphone to amp/pc lead. I can walk around the house, garden even.
Often I can practice in the same room while the family watch a movie.
My only regret is that it took me a year to make the decision after hearing about them as trying out was impossible - that’s a lot of potential playing I missed out on.
Haven’t seen any negative posts from people that have bought them.
This product is just awesome. I don't use my 2 amps now.
This had potential as a practice tool for people living in apartments that feel the itch to play in the middle of the nights. Too many cons though: no replaceable battery is the biggest no no. I have most of my guitar gear for more than 10 years. How much do you expect to be able to use the same battery in these? 3-4 years? For 440 euros?! You should also be able to plug it into your amps and not rely only on the crappy digital simed amps from boss. I also haven’t found anyone that cares for the gyro sound thingy.
Modern li ion battery don't loose charge as quickly, and anyway you can service these, they are built with screws and bolts, not glued like most modern cellphones. And you CAN plug your own amp. As usual, loads of people commenting knowing jackshit, classic yt.
I feel like I’ve just witnessed the birth of CSMR
Science has gone too far with this one
Do the headphones come with an ear licking option? Asking for a friend
That's an additional charge
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh you rule
Please don't lick my ear again. That gave me the creeps.
Does it have a setting for the drunken 2 am guitar stumble shuffle? Or even the classic bottle of Bucky "spa hands" mode? Great Listen and watch man \m/
4:54 how do you virtually slap someone in the face and throw a drink on them?
Wasa uses magic let’s just leave it at that Boston Riff 🤘🏽 because the I just can’t see the Edge playing SOD?😂
Ingenious review & the best understanding of this Waza Air Headphones ever! Very Well Done!
I have played so much with headphones in my apartment that I dont find it weird. I actually like it, makes me hear details better and be more precise
I love recording my band's jams with a simple 2-mic binaural setup. Oddly I found a good spot right at the front/outside bottom of the kick, away from the snare. I had my amp about 5 feet away facing the mics/drummer. Sounds decent enough with a lot of compression.
Oh that's weird.
I'm nearly convinced to get them - but unfortunately my ears do not like closed-back over-ear headphones. Like not at all. In-ears are fine, On-ears are fine mostly but over-ears are a no go. My recommendation for anyone considering getting these: try wearing closed-back over-ear headphones first and see if your ears agree with them. 30 minutes is the maximum for me and doing that every day can backfire
One thing I'm wondering, though: when will we see the first VR integration? Maybe with a specialized app on your phone? That'd be damn cool, like actual virtual amp experience. Actually fiddling with the knobs and effects in VR space
The songs playing along will also be affected by the movement or only the guitar???
1) In the early '80s, a number of hi-fi audio devices were produced, going variously under the name "image enhancer", "sonic hologram", and other terms. I have 3 such gadgets, all using bucket-brigade chips/circuits. Ten years later, the same thing showed up digitally as Q-sound, and around a decade after that, we had the SRS (sound retrieval system) software option on Windows Media Player. All of these aimed to create a binaural listening experience with what gets called a "sound shadow". In its most primitive analog form, a "difference" signal (left-minus right, right-minus-left) would be synthesized for each channel, and cross-fed to the opposite channel with a few milliseconds' delay and some lowpass filtering, to mimic what happens when a sound source is coming from off to the side, and reaches the opposite ear via reflections. It was the sort of thing you didn't really notice that much when you turned it on, but when you turned it off, the reaction was generally "Hey, where did the music go?!". Really quite a striking improvement, that created a more "3-D" soundstage, and would decrease listener fatigue, even though it tended to increase noise levels a bit. But you could close your eyes and "hear" where each instrument was positioned.
Of course, the effect was fixed and assumed the listener was always dead-centre, facing forward. The Waza headphones appear to take advantage of two things: a) improved digital modelling of distance, location, and room properties, and b) the gyroscopic sensors we have in many mobile devices (and things like the Source Audio Hot Hand controller) that rotate the screen in response to movement in 3-D space. The listener is no longer required to sit perfectly still to have a sense of physical-spatial realism, and similarly not required to adjust anything to have the effect track where they are facing.
2) Twenty years back, a number of artists recorded albums using binaural mic systems, the late great Lou Reed among them. Personally, I've never listened to any of these albums, but I understand the goal was to have a greater sense of "being in the room" with the artists.
3) Is that a Red Llama t-shirt?
4) I had the great privilege of having Al Bregman. the originator of "auditory scene analysis" ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auditory_scene_analysis ) as one of my profs, during undergrad.
Very nice demonstration Colin - the binaural audio is cool but confirmed to me unfortunately Boss made a huge design mistake with these (at least imo) by placing the virtual speakers level with the user in their modelling so it's not as realistic a sound character.
I've tried a set of these, and in person I feels like someone has mounted an amp directly at head height, so even with the reverb engaged it feels unnatural like the sound is being 'targeted' at the users head. I did wonder if it was just the environment I tried them in but obviously not. It's a shame, as whilst you can't expect a perfect sound from something virtually modelled, I would have thought they would have given options for the height/angle of the virtual cab to compensate and make it a more natural sound.
Agreed. I've tried several binauralizing and spatial audio FX software tools and always find that it sounds not quite right exactly at 0°elevation. I tend to set it to -15° or so and that makes the directionality sound much more realistic.
faszinating... 3 years ago I had a university project that had the theme of binaural audio being used to provoke different feelings based on the pokémon lavender town beta soundtrack. Was interesting to experience
Ahhh the old Lavender Town creepy pasta. Do you have a write up of your findings?
Sadly no, as the project itself was more of an art stunt, we built a tower with a shaker inside that made noise when you aproached it. Then you needed to plug in headphones and press a buzzer to start hearing some binaural audio. Depending on hearing fatique (older people tend to hear less and we programmed beats to around 20 kHz) people started to feel... things. I would have loved to study different effects, sadly it was just a short exhibition and other people had to show cool things too.
This must be the best demo/review for those headphones that I've seen here, great work man! Now I just need something to remove that sexy whispering from my brain... Or do I?
Had mine on order for a while, looks like they’re on the way at the end of the month! As we head back into lockdown these are going to be a godsend!
Your hard work is paying off man! Getting some great sponsors! I have a bunch of BOSS and Roland stuff. Great equipment!
Ok you're crazy hot
But goddammit don't whisper in my ears, I had studio headphones on, I got like super fucking uncomfortable xD
definitely the best tonal-quality representation I've heard of these so far among the many on UA-cam and elsewhere. just purchased a set online. i would like to be able to get a better feel for how LOUD i can get these to sound on my own ears, but mine will be here in a couple days. still a great demo vid Colin!
Ok, I WAS LIKE YOU, yes you! , who read this and still trying to make sound decision. I was checking every video and all possible online opinions for probably 2 days. I have red, heard about gyro drift issue and other negative stuff regarding Waza Air, but I took the leap. NO regrets whatsoever ! Giro thing is not that important, sound and freedom are. If you want best possible sound of your guitar through headphones, this is it ! no kidding. So, If you have paid all the bills and kids are feed, do not hesitate, in my humble opinion they are worth it. Playing along to backing tracks in any room you like is priceless. Exercising arpeggios on the toilet seat unforgettable :-)Trust me on this one ! If this comment helped you, please give me “like” below, I want to see lots of happy Waza Air users.
Binaural is...inadequate for recording. For this? Fucking perfect. I've tried to build this several times over the years and failed miserably.
Welcome to CSASMR 😎
Forget the headphones I want that mic...and those ears, and maybe throw in a left shoulder.
Cheers
Damn, and their reasonably priced
I have a pair of those and I hate them. The sound is just glorified reverb. The app sucks, it resets everything every time you turn them on and its a bitch to dial in the sound you want. They're more of a pain in the ass than they are useful.
Can you tell me what the 3Dio mic is running through? Sounds great
The Katana is the only amp I’ve tried out that has a great headphone output.
My life is complete. I've been on a date speedrun with csguitars so i can die Happy
So that's a blue tooth thing? Like i could take them van camping as long as I had service?
Is this a JAM Delay Llama shirt? Looking dope.
Bought these 6 months ago. Great sound and modelling features match my Katana 50. Worse point is the recharge time for headphones and transmitter. Why oh why do they only provide 1 usb cable and insist that only this cable can be used for charging. At the price surely 2 could be included.
Any micro USB cable will work, I wasn't waiting around to charge them separately. Agreed they should include two cables though.
@@ScienceofLoud Cheers, I thought it would be ok but wanted to be sure as it would invalidate warranty
Can they handle bass played straight into them and is there an ear plug emulator?
Cool demo and 🦙shirt! Sounded really good in 200w surround sound!😎👍
Best review of these I've seen, if I hadn't already bought them I'd buy them! As my wife is working from home I couldn't play during the day and having neighbours precluded late night shennanigins, these have solved the problem, I'd recommend them to anyone.
BTW, I found the licking of my virtual ear a little disturbing! ;-)
Anyone else love and hate how that microphone set is working?
Man those sound amazing.
Has anyone ever tried to combine it with a fly rig?
Love them even though the update didn't work.
Underrated review. Thank you!
Intriguing and arousing from the get go. Beautiful. 🙊
If only they weren't 400+ euros 😂
Those binaural microphones are really bad...
Bad in what way?
@@ScienceofLoud In accurately representing acoustic impedance of human ears. And also needs inverse equalization to compensate for the frequency response introduced by it. Not that I expect that you guys would use professional B&K or GRAS HATS. I didn't like the way you were describing it. It should probably instead be the best that you could do.
Well of course, none of them can represent real human hearing accurately and these are a pretty cheap introductory model. It's a basic approximation.
I think it goes without saying that they are no substitute for experiencing the sound first hand (first ear).
Regardless, they give a better representation than not using them at all. They are more than good enough for a demo on UA-cam.
Re how it was being described: it was really a description of the type of binaural microphone as a whole rather than this specific unit. I was communicating the larger concept as the video isn't about the microphone.
@@ScienceofLoud Sure.
i dont leave.. you give too valuable information for that
I GOT SO MUCH FUCKING ASMR FROM THIS LMAO
4:35 is not for ticklish people
7:30 is it SOAD or depeche mode?
lol that was great thank you
I find binaural microphonics are a poor approximation of human hearing mostly due to mutlitude of factors from skull thickness to the functional directionality of your ear canal. Your ears don't hear perfectly left-right unless the source is actually nearly inside them and even then it is somewhat difficult to fool your brain. Part of the reason stereo music is a good approximation of looking at a band on stage is that your brain is processing the music as being in front of you. The majority of directionality of your ear and the way your brain processes is to hear maximum clarity at what you are looking at (i.e. slightly preferential toward your nose and away from your spine), which is why you turn your head when you hear a twig snap instead of what a dog does and turns its ears continuing to look forward. Just little biological oversights in manufacture and design processes that result in an experience you can immediately identify as being artificial. As a majority of the designers making these things think a rubber ear is a good approximation of its function (your ear channels sound in front of you and is made of several composite tissues to help filter sound behind you like the rejection port of an SM57). I think we'll make a leap forward into more fidelity when the systems not only gain complexity but also stop considering you to be a generic mammal (left right vision, left right sight, quadrapedal) rather than a highly specified primate.
Still pretty cool that they keep working towards it.
actually come to think of it. ive never heard anyone play anything "subtly" before. good work colin

What if we needed to switch tones mid song for buildups, breakdowns, or lead? Is that possible. Shoutout to elevated jam tracks btw
Does the quality of the guitar change the quality of the sound or is it like a programmed sound in the headphones so all guitars will sound the same? Thanks
Jesus Colin, that was freaky as fuck when you were talking into them, especially if you had your eyes closed. 🤣🤣🤣

The surprise ASMR was outstanding. Also amazing demo. Ty ❤️
Very Cool! Pink Floyd/Roger Waters have used Binaural Sound recordings for sound effect playbacks at concerts (and some recordings) for many years. I think I remember reading in CREEM magazine that Lou Reed was the first to use it for recording a concert in 1978 (and that Blue Oyster Cult was trying to hire the same team to record one of their concerts). The mics they had looked like a whole human head!
