I'm a big fan of how it all works. Science and technology are a lot of fun, but when they are used for creating interesting sounds, that's when they're at their coolest.
I kind of regret not doing more ASMR with that microphone before shipping it back. I might have a go at building one myself, after looking inside it they aren't all that complicated.
As far as modeling devices go, these headphones sound remarkably “analog.” There’s a specific quality to tube distortion that is hard to describe, but these headphones do it as well or better than anything else I’ve tried. I have a Helix Floor and as much as I hate to admit it, there’s something about these headphones that makes them “feel” and sound more realistic to me. It might be that they are simulating a cab in a room instead of a mic’d cab as all other modeling devices do. The feel, dynamics and immediacy with these headphones is amazing.
@@ScienceofLoudasking entirely too long after the fact here but do you have any recollection as to what the delay settings were there? I've been trying to nail that for years and still haven't gotten it right.
Forget the sound and the app and all that - they sound great. I can now play “anywhere” at anytime, I’m not constrained by the headphone to amp/pc lead. I can walk around the house, garden even. Often I can practice in the same room while the family watch a movie. My only regret is that it took me a year to make the decision after hearing about them as trying out was impossible - that’s a lot of potential playing I missed out on. Haven’t seen any negative posts from people that have bought them.
definitely the best tonal-quality representation I've heard of these so far among the many on UA-cam and elsewhere. just purchased a set online. i would like to be able to get a better feel for how LOUD i can get these to sound on my own ears, but mine will be here in a couple days. still a great demo vid Colin!
I got a pair of these and they are fantastic tool to study at every hour of the day/night. You can also plug the wireless jack to the out of a multi fx/pedalboard and just run the flat response amp in the headphones using your own effects, and just the cab sim from the waza air headphones.
When Andertons reviewed them several months back, they found that you can connect the transmitter to the output of your pedal board allowing you to use the majority of your own FX
That's exactly how I managed to reamp all these guitar tracks back into the headphones for audio capture. Guitar > DI > Interface > Reamp > Transmitter > Waza > 3DIO > Interface. But then I ran into the problem of the transmitter shutting off after 30 seconds of no movement and I had to search the settings to have it never turn off. I probably should have made more noise about that in the video.
Bonus points for describing my spouse as "long suffering" when describing the effects of my guitar playing. Her response to this claim? A sad nod of the head, and singular "Aye."

Best review of these I've seen, if I hadn't already bought them I'd buy them! As my wife is working from home I couldn't play during the day and having neighbours precluded late night shennanigins, these have solved the problem, I'd recommend them to anyone.
I love recording my band's jams with a simple 2-mic binaural setup. Oddly I found a good spot right at the front/outside bottom of the kick, away from the snare. I had my amp about 5 feet away facing the mics/drummer. Sounds decent enough with a lot of compression.

It would be really cool to listen to an album which replicated a sense of movement like this, like a noise source was revolving around you constantly, moving close/far away, above, below. Could be a really neat experienced.
1) In the early '80s, a number of hi-fi audio devices were produced, going variously under the name "image enhancer", "sonic hologram", and other terms. I have 3 such gadgets, all using bucket-brigade chips/circuits. Ten years later, the same thing showed up digitally as Q-sound, and around a decade after that, we had the SRS (sound retrieval system) software option on Windows Media Player. All of these aimed to create a binaural listening experience with what gets called a "sound shadow". In its most primitive analog form, a "difference" signal (left-minus right, right-minus-left) would be synthesized for each channel, and cross-fed to the opposite channel with a few milliseconds' delay and some lowpass filtering, to mimic what happens when a sound source is coming from off to the side, and reaches the opposite ear via reflections. It was the sort of thing you didn't really notice that much when you turned it on, but when you turned it off, the reaction was generally "Hey, where did the music go?!". Really quite a striking improvement, that created a more "3-D" soundstage, and would decrease listener fatigue, even though it tended to increase noise levels a bit. But you could close your eyes and "hear" where each instrument was positioned. Of course, the effect was fixed and assumed the listener was always dead-centre, facing forward. The Waza headphones appear to take advantage of two things: a) improved digital modelling of distance, location, and room properties, and b) the gyroscopic sensors we have in many mobile devices (and things like the Source Audio Hot Hand controller) that rotate the screen in response to movement in 3-D space. The listener is no longer required to sit perfectly still to have a sense of physical-spatial realism, and similarly not required to adjust anything to have the effect track where they are facing. 2) Twenty years back, a number of artists recorded albums using binaural mic systems, the late great Lou Reed among them. faszinating... 3 years ago I had a university project that had the theme of binaural audio being used to provoke different feelings based on the pokémon lavender town beta soundtrack. Was interesting to experience
Sadly no, as the project itself was more of an art stunt, we built a tower with a shaker inside that made noise when you aproached it. Then you needed to plug in headphones and press a buzzer to start hearing some binaural audio. Depending on hearing fatique (older people tend to hear less and we programmed beats to around 20 kHz) people started to feel... things. I would have loved to study different effects, sadly it was just a short exhibition and other people had to show cool things too.
Very Cool! Pink Floyd/Roger Waters have used Binaural Sound recordings for sound effect playbacks at concerts (and some recordings) for many years. I think I remember reading in CREEM magazine that Lou Reed was the first to use it for recording a concert in 1978 (and that Blue Oyster Cult was trying to hire the same team to record one of their concerts). The mics they had looked like a whole human head!
Would love to see something with this feature set that you can use with the headphones out of any amp, rather than just a standalone device. It's a really cool idea and I'd love to use something like it for my main setup and all my pedals
I'm nearly convinced to get them - but unfortunately my ears do not like closed-back over-ear headphones. Like not at all. In-ears are fine, On-ears are fine mostly but over-ears are a no go. My recommendation for anyone considering getting these: try wearing closed-back over-ear headphones first and see if your ears agree with them. 30 minutes is the maximum for me and doing that every day can backfire One thing I'm wondering, though: when will we see the first VR integration? Maybe with a specialized app on your phone? That'd be damn cool, like actual virtual amp experience. Actually fiddling with the knobs and effects in VR space
Does it have a setting for the drunken 2 am guitar stumble shuffle? Or even the classic bottle of Bucky "spa hands" mode? Great Listen and watch man \m/
Very nice demonstration Colin - the binaural audio is cool but confirmed to me unfortunately Boss made a huge design mistake with these (at least imo) by placing the virtual speakers level with the user in their modelling so it's not as realistic a sound character. I've tried a set of these, and in person I feels like someone has mounted an amp directly at head height, so even with the reverb engaged it feels unnatural like the sound is being 'targeted' at the users head. I did wonder if it was just the environment I tried them in but obviously not. It's a shame, as whilst you can't expect a perfect sound from something virtually modelled, I would have thought they would have given options for the height/angle of the virtual cab to compensate and make it a more natural sound.
Agreed. I've tried several binauralizing and spatial audio FX software tools and always find that it sounds not quite right exactly at 0°elevation. I tend to set it to -15° or so and that makes the directionality sound much more realistic.
Great work as always.... I would definitely buy these if they included a good way to stream songs/backing tracks in to them for jamming... still tempted to get them, no wires or anything all controls easy to reach on my phone... I guess to stream tracks the boss app would have to include a way to access your music library and streaming sites... can't be that hard to do, bonus points if they let you add fx and eq to the backing tracks...there are other ways I can think of to do this so I am sure the geniuses at boss will figure this out for the next edition !
Ohhh man, that toxicity riff with the delay. Thought you were going to break into the song a few time.... now i have to go listen to the track
Uncomfortably amused. I suspect I enjoyed this a bit too much :P
That's the reaction I was hoping for.
Do the headphones come with an ear licking option? Asking for a friend
That's an additional charge
The Katana is the only amp I’ve tried out that has a great headphone output.
Can you tell me what the 3Dio mic is running through? Sounds great
