  • Trying to get closer to making the ideal broom-style Zelkova, Eric experiments with a new technique he discovered in a Japanese bonsai book.
00:00:39 There are two substyles of Zelkova broom - the first is all branches come out from a central place, and the second still has a leader but there's rapid tapering and dividing.
00:01:17 Eric shares an example of the second technique with finer branching but not the shaping Eric hopes to create.
00:02:46 Examples two and three have similar issues.
00:03:42 Example 4 looks better (likely because it has leaves on it!) but suffers from the same issue as the others.
00:04:11 Before beginning to experiment with the first technique, Eric explains how he enabled a larger trunk to grow.
00:05:22 Let the experimenting begin! The technique is to avoid reverse taper - drilling a hole in the center of the cut, about 1/3 of the diameter of the cut. Then cut a wedge along the center.
00:05:58 Next, tie the two leaders with raffia to force inward healing.
00:06:46 Where Eric wants the most buds to come from and a few more examples of this technique.
00:07:44 One tree that Eric does not drill but does wrap.
What do you think of these techniques? Have you had success with either? Share your experiences with us in the comments below. Thank you for watching! Please give this video a like and share it with your bonsai friends. And please subscribe to our channel!

what fortuitous timing! I bought three of these broom starters from you a few months ago as I was eager to try and see if I could develop such a beautiful archetypal tree. the starters I purchased from you are thriving, thank you for your excellent plants

This video was perfect for me. I heard, pruning back quite fast slows the process. I’ve never understood why that’s the case and if that’s even true. This video shows exactly this. The plant you let grow is much thicker than the other ones. Great thanks

As a potter, I am extremely interested in making especially tiny pots. Recently UA-cam suggested Mame Bonsai videos and I am fascinated! I am curious as a Bonsai artist, what do you look for in a pot? What makes it ideal for bonsai and having seen one of your previous videos knowing that you have experience with mame bonsai, what would you look for in a great pot for mame bonsai? Are certain features important? I have noticed that the holes in the bottom serve multiple purposes in not only providing drainage but also to hold wire for anchoring. Most pots seem fairly shallow in relation to the size of the pot, but some are taller. Can you please elaborate on what the pot shape you would choose for one type of bonsai or another would depend on? I know that is probably not something easy to explain to someone who doesn’t have any experience with bonsai growing and grooming, but I’m interested in learning how to make my pots better suited for this purpose and what I can learn in terms of why certain things would make a pot better for this purpose. Do you choose glaze colors and textures purely on your own preference and artistic vision or are there specific rules that say this is acceptable for bonsai and that is not? Thanks for sharing whatever you would like to share with me in regards to this or maybe hopefully if you would like to do a video explaining these things or perhaps already have and would like to point me in the direction of finding such a video. As a new viewer, I am delighted with watching your videos and techniques. Thank you for sharing!

I did a video on this a while back - but it's not comprehensive.
      ua-cam.com/video/htBeL0GqoiI/v-deo.html
Typically the feet, the outward sloping wall and the rim are the key parts. I would familiarize yourself with some of the Japanese language channels like Bonsai-Q - they actually have videos of people carving/making mame pots mixed in.

On trees with a decent head of branches but not fully formed I've seen japanese guys wrap up or bind the branches together like a Christmas tree, I think the idea is to stop knuckles forming

Are you doing these techniques after post flush hardening? Or is this still work we can do in late Spring?
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. You have been very helpful and my trees are definitely thankful😂

Actually, the book shows them in winter. Do I don't think that it's super important when you do it. Generally I'm doing deciduous work in spring a lot, so that's when I think of these things.

Eric, do young Zelkova fuse their trunks over time? What if you tied in the lower trunk 4 or so thin young trees? I am experimenting with that but I am unsure if I am just wasting my time.

I don't think so. At least not easily. Tridents for sure, ficus, azaleas...

Long long will you keep the wrapping and wire on?

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  2 місяці тому

Probably about 1-2 months, then check and re-wrap as needed.

Would you identify the ‘book’ by name and author for this technique? Thank you.

If only I could read Japanese! here is a link to a listing for the ISBN - on Amazon - amzn.to/49TvnDu
The ISBN is 978-4-905777-20-5. The translated title is "How to grow maple and zelkova" You get better search results using the Japanese title: 楓・けやきの育て方
