Walter Pall is an amazing bonsai practitioner. He has his own ways of working on trees and does not look for the approval of others. I have had the honor and privilege to have taken 6 workshops with him and he is in person just as he is in this video. He has changed my ways of looking at and designing bonsai and I am grateful for that. Thank you Walter.
Very inspiring. I live in Vietnam where bonsai is commonly styled to look like people, animals or something else..but naturalistic bonsai is truly my taste. Thank you Sir!
It's always pleasure to listen You sir.People who are confused and people who decide for us the front n back of a tree must follow Mr Walter Pall.He is the only one who makes us relaxed by saying that a "bonsai must look like a tree.'Thanks a lot for sharing this video.
I've been taking care of a chinese banyan for just about 20 years now. My dad found it on the side of the road in someone's garbage. It was tossed out. I believe that when I acquired this tree, my best guess is that it was around 10-15 years old already. It was in bad shape. I took care of it daily-weekly for about 10 years. At one point, I had gone away and for about 5 years, it was allowed to grow wildly out of control, a root made its way through the bottom drain hole, into the ground where it then exploded in growth. Upon my return to my old bonsai tree, I brought it back under control, pulled it up, cut the root, and repotted it into a larger clayware pot, trimmed it back, over and over again. My bonsai now brings me to this video, searching broom style, which is what I assumed it was 20 years ago when I acquired it. This mans explanation about the style of his tree makes sense. When I look at banyan trees here in South Florida, where I live, I see my tree is giant form. My banyan looks like a natural wild banyan, something produced by nature, untouched by man. I know otherwise, of course. But, this man has inspired me to do the same with other species. Since my life is stable now, my home is stable, and I may have a few decades left in my life to live. I want to use his technique to continue caring for my chinese banyan tree whilst creating other specimen trees. I have already started with a Giant Sequoia, a Live Oak, and I will add a White Oak, a Weeping Willow, a Colorado Blue Spruce, and a couple more. Hopefully, I shall live to see their future beauty. I will keep them natural, just miniature trees you'd see in nature. This is a large commitment, and I will arrange a home for them for after I am gone, I just hope they're taken good care of and enjoyed. In another 20-30 years, my banyan will be an estimated 50-60 years old. I wonder what it will look like when it's that old? There is only one way to find out... Continue to live the journey...
I love his maverick kind of approach to miniature trees. I love bonsai, but I too have a rebellious attitude against pure formality. But as he said, there are several styles and this is one of them. I find it tiring when some uptight bonsai lovers, turn their nose to a penjing or a more unusual style. Going back to ancient Chinese and Japanese thinking “it’s for the pleasure it brings” I was going to wire a couple of small trees I have in my garden, but watching this video made me change my mind... one of those trees shall remain natural 👌🏻😃
Absolutely beautiful tree and an inspiring talk about the naturalistic style. I think I might prefer the "back" front, but I'd have to see it in person. Beautiful.

Good to hear, I have mostly natural style and a few I called fairy tale but didn't know that was a thing, now I do and won't hide them. This is a hobby with room for everyone, everyone has their own taste and never change your taste to fit in, thank you Walter. Be careful when your wife gives you tea, make her sip it first.
Ecco uno straordinario esempio di naturalezza riscontrabile negli alberi monumentali censiti dalla forestale. La quintessenza Bonsai, priva di assurdi geometrismi!
Of course, an interesting approach has grown. If I understand correctly, then it is an approach among the Japanese designers. The tree made itself beautiful.
We have many American Hornbeams growing in our woodlot, I think I'll spend the weekend searching for one that could someday resemble it's European cousin.
He speaks about naturalistic bonsai like it's easy, of course, the man has it in its veins! That level of perception is not easy, maybe because of that it's easier for begginers to follow a well stablished design, than trying to mimic nature itself. Thanks Walter Pall.
yeah, and the most unrealistic are junipers, you can't make the crown so even and triangular and keep all the rules, because the twisted and irregular deadwood with crazy, but natural shapes have been made by nature from a former crown. so the current crown's style should match the style of the dead wood.
My thoughts exactly. It’s kind of cool to see a Bonsai grown to perfection over 50-100+ years but that’s not reality. Trees in nature have “flaws” which make them beautiful and unique (just like people).
It seems like the only realistic approach to the naturalistic style is to start from Yamadori, which is fine but will like to see examples of this style been achieved with fairly young grown material or prebonsai. I mean buying a semi-developed bonsai and converted it to a naturalistic miniature tree.
You can start from seed. But it will take 30 years before this is something important. You can start from a nursery tree, no problem. only collected trees are usually universes better. So why lower your standards and waste literally decades? In my workshops people work with the kind of material you mention all the time. I personally want better for myself.
Bonsai can come from all forms a seed, nature or more common nurseries. More tree are cut down for commercial use than the few compared that are made into bonsai that are still around nowerdays for personal collect or display that shows like this.
@@luisw3406 I never said that a tree collected from the wild couldn't be a bonsai and we all agree that the plant from the video is spectacular. what I am saying is that taking it from nature is harmful, in some or most countries its banned under fees impositions for one simple reason, some species of trees were and are endangered from disappearing from the wild because people collected them. It could be from self-benefit or to sell them and it has been a serious problem. it's easy to take 100 trees some may die and sell the rest with not much work and a little time spend on them because they are already formed. in Spain, it's forbidden even taking moss.
