Holy Rogers, Tim, that got real. Just wanted to say I can relate with the infertility :( The wife and I have been trying for 18 months and recently got some less than favorable news on my end. There's still a chance at a child through crazy expensive procedures, procedures that insurance does not cover AND do not have a 100% success rate to boot. The whole thing just sucks, and just wanted to say I can sympathize. Happy to hear you came to terms with it eventually, hoping I can make it there some day. Thanks for being real Tim! Lol don't know why I felt the need to talk about my life problems in a UA-cam comment, but hey, I did and you read it. UPDATE: Thank you all for the positive feedback and well wishes. Adoption was always on the table for my wife, however not long after this original comment, I went and saw another urologist in Chicago (we're from Milwaukee) for another opinion. He explained to me and my wife that despite my rare condition, he was confident he would find living sperm inside my body and through a relatively inexpensive (compared to other procedures) called a TESE, extract it. The way he broke it down for us really gave us the hope we needed to move forward, plus we discovered our insurance would cover more than we anticipated. The small tissue sample I had to surrender may make me less of a man but it was a thousand times worth it, because I am happy to report that we are expecting our first child next January! We announced it in a fun way as well, with a Dad Joke video: ua-cam.com/video/_-UmyN1EQ3U/v-deo.html Our prayers were answered in so many ways, through our insurance coming through for us, to medical advancements and amazing doctors, and all the support from friends and family and even strangers like you guys. If anyone struggling with infertility happens to read this, don't give up! Miracles happen.
If your sperms are immobile you might try something, but you will probably need a strong will. A german TV show (pretty sure it was Galileo on Pro7 but I can´t find a video, it is long ago) had 3 men as test subjects, all of which had the walking dead sperms, one a little bit, another pretty much and the last one almost completely immobile, all three of them were infertile. They put them on sth like a raw vegan juice diet, meaning they were only allowed to drink freshly squeezed vegetable and fruit juices, no other food. They weren´t keen as they "were real men loving their meaty meals". Guess what had happend after 6 weeks? (yes, sorry for that, U can´t expect wonders after one day) All three#s sperms were much more mobile. Even the one completely infertile would have been able to "make" a child as the number of healthy sperms had increased a lot. I know it must seem impossible and extremely hard if used to regular food but if you really wanted children it may be worth a try. In the end it would be better for your body anyway.
The love you would have for an adopted child would be no less real or valid than the love you'd have with a biological child. Lots of kids need help and if you're looking to start a family please consider using it as an opportunity to reduce the amount of sadness in the world.
It's the right time for him to open up about himself. Everyone loves him. I feel bad he has to live with Crohn's disease (which makes his output even more impressive) and it makes me sad that he had to go through dealing with the reality of infertility.
You've mentioned in tweets that making UA-cam videos as a living isn't your ideal. That makes watching these feel like watching my favorite filmmaker having to make car commercials which is somewhat sad. But they're the best "car commercials" I've ever seen. They're polished, rewatchable, funny, visually appealing, and intellectually stimulating. While you may wish you were able to make a living expressing your creativity another way, I'm grateful that you doing it this way gives me the chance to enjoy it so frequently and extensively.
That tutor story though. Heard it while chopping onions. You're a good dude Tim Rogers. Not sure if it's any consolation but every parent I know that has adopted kids and birth kids say they feel no difference in love and parental feelings for both.
Alright I agree completely with what you said and am really just playing devil's advocate, in fact I really don't know why I'm writing this comment. But if somehow these parents did prefer their birth children it's not like they'd go around telling people
I am in disbelief how talented Tim Rogers is. Tim has a gift unlike any other human being. His ability to use words and describe the majestic, fantastic, and incredible things about all the video games that we love and hate is unparalleled. I need to be friends with Tim Rogers. How do I become friends with Tim Rogers? Tim, be my friend. Please.
Jesus. I don't think I know of a single other person that could mix hilarity and one of the most genuine heartfelt stories I've ever heard so effortlessly. Thanks for being willing to put yourself out there. I can only say this, life dealt you a shitty hand, and you're doing a great job playing the cards you've been dealt, Tim.
Dang. That part about the guitar and Japanese kid really got me. As a musician myself, any story linking emotion with an excellent musical experience speaks to me. Tim, I started on your videos with your fantastic, in-depth review of Dragon Quest 11. Thanks for brightening my days, my dude! Keep up the excellent work!
I was born stupid in 1974 but I will certainly die hungry for more of Tim's great commentary and stories. Thanks for your great work and vids this year. Hope you have a healthy and happy 2019.
Tim, this was your best looking on camera appearance yet (in addition to the fabulous narrative experience)! The "I'm dead tired and feel the exhilarating calm of having accomplished a job well done" feeling and look shows.
Touching story during #3. Seems like you had a very positive impact on that kid and it really stuck with him, and that's a beautiful thing. Also, your story about stepping on the rat during #7 may have obliterated my mind. Good stuff all around, sir.
Ugh, I was trying to avoid Kotaku so I wouldn't get sucked into another Tim Rogers video, but lo and behold the UA-cam algorithm throws this into my recommendations and here I am.... whatever, not like I needed this 45 minutes for cleaning.... Edit: Dang man, that story really hit hard. Ya know, I used to work in childcare, and one thing that's always an issue with youth groups like the the Boys and Girls club or those Big Brother/Sister programs is that there's never enough guys to volunteer and help out, which is a shame since statistically things have been getting harder for boys over the years in many facets of life. I'm sure as a grown adult older than myself there's a good chance you are well aware of that fact (or already do something like that now), so me sharing that is mostly just a way of saying that I think you'd be a great fit for one of those programs. After all, look how many of us show up because you're specifically the one doing a video, simply because we think you're that cool/informative. Heck I'm a grown @$$ man, and the fact that my mentor at work will take a little time out of his day just to talk about books we like with me makes getting up in the morning that much easier day after day.

I was wondering if we'd get your rat-stepping anecdote again as soon as Vermintide came up. I was not dissapointed. I love your Verbosity, Tim! You are a most excellent person.
The stepping on the rat story changed my life. Actually the story during the God of War part changed my life, but it didn't change it back, it changed it to something new. Worth clarifying.

Hey Tim, I love your videos and hate leaving comments but I appreciate how open you are on this one. I hope your health improves! Thanks for all your work putting these together! You're probably the Game Thoughts guy that I'm most aligned with in taste.
2017 and 18 were really good years for games. People on UA-cam love to say that "games are in serious trouble, dude" and sure AAA games are pretty regularly some dull shit but the amount of world class games that have come in the last 6 years is absurd and you would never run out unless you dedicated your life to it, by which point a whole bunch of newer great games will have come out. People need to chill the flip out about that. Let the big companies put out the filler trash. Play something else, theres plenty of it
Man, that whole part about fatherhood during that one game played a solo on my heart strings for sure. Great list Tim, i've played most of them and finished a surprisingly low amount of them, so i could include 2018 games in my 2019 GOTYs for sure like you did for some.
Your exposition about fatherhood reminded me of my own experience with miscarriage, loss of a child and how sometimes things do not go as we planned. I felt solace in the idea that while you have went through your own loss of parentalship, you did not allow it to stop you from doing what you love (writing things about the visual-action medium of video games) or from even experimenting with different glasses to decorate your face with (all of which, have looked goodly stylish). Sometimes in order to prove we are strong, we do not need to kill various Gods with axes, so much as pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and continue what we can do with our time here on earth. Thank you for sharing what you experienced, for it made me know that I am not alone and that I could even thrive in a post-parental skill-self world I find myself in. Your art is understated and fun, thank you very much for sharing it with us, and me in particular.
I feel like GOW offered a specific kind of fatherhood for people to play through, and even though I'd be a perfect candidate to be enthralled by it, I'd like to see different kinds of parental set ups be celebrated like that. I'd like to see Samus be a dad.

Tim Rogers I love everything you make and I am not your mother. I guess I also around the same age and lived in Japan and speak Japanese so I feel some connection like enjoying your content enables me to love myself like the self centered human being I am. Anyway I hope you feel valid and loved.
Glad to see a "Found in Translation" in the videos he most enjoyed making. That's an excellent series, but I always imagined it must be extremely tedious and draining to actually make them.
oh they are INCREDIBLY tedious. i'll have the last episode finished next month. also, i'm going to give the name a series people will actually remember
Tim, I've gotta say that your videos were some of my favorite parts of 2018. Your unique personality shines through in each video, and I really appreciate that whether I care about the game in question or not. I do have a question, though: How do you find time to play all of these games? Did you actually beat all of them, or did you play enough to get an opinion with some of them? Do you, like, ever sleep?
108 VIDEOS!? Shit have to get watching, I had no idea. In all honesty I thought the Dragon Quest XI video was a one-off, then I started seeing more of your work. Kotaku earned another subscriber, just for you!
i listened to this video while on the subway and your description of the smell was spot on haha. anyway. loved your list. there are a couple games that i haven't played yet, (hollow knight and Vermintide 2), and i plan to pick them up this holiday now!
I started to have feels during the God of War segment. As the story got sadder and sadder I thought, "oh no, I don't think he's going to make a joke anymore, this is getting too real." And then holy shit, what followed had me rolling on the floor laughing. Tim, please never change, you're amazing.
With this and the Let's Go Pokemon video, thank you for making me feel comfortable talking about/having a sense of humour about my Crohn's. I'm not trying to be funny right now.
Lucky for Tim theres at least a few other retro game collections that more than meet the standards of the snk collection. What a nice treat for us whom hail from the future
This video was 45 minutes long? I guess time flies when you're having fun. Thanks for all the fantastic videos in 2018, looking forward to 2019. Did that comma splice bug you?

Glad to see a "Found in Translation" in the videos he most enjoyed making. That's an excellent series, but I always imagined it must be extremely tedious and draining to actually make them.
oh they are INCREDIBLY tedious. i'll have the last episode finished next month. also, i'm going to give the name a series people will actually remember
Tim Rogers, you are a treasure to mankind
i love how audibly excited he gets when talking about dusk haha gotta pick that one up
4:44 - 2023 and still waiting
The story of you teaching a boy how to play guitar on a whim and him later on in life signing a record label makes me want to bawl.
That rat story is so unbelievably hilariously worded that i regularly return to this video for that alone.
Tim Rogers, you may just be the best personality on UA-cam my man.
20:57 - 21:14 it would be safe to say that i think about this exact collection of words at least once a week, if not more! great words, tim.
this is some of your best work right here, Tim!
Holy shit, number 3! Man, I want a 10 min podcast of Tim rogers telling me personal ass stories.
ive watched this video a couple times over the past year and every time i tear up when tim rogers talks about god of war.
"The ability to build a rickety cartoon hobo shack around yourself" hahaha I'm dying
You’re hilarious. Thank you so much for the hard work you put in, it’s staggering.
Tim, you are seriously the best thing that happened to the internet.
I feel honored to see the face behind Tim Roger's glorious voice and delivery.
I started to have feels during the God of War segment. As the story got sadder and sadder I thought, "oh no, I don't think he's going to make a joke anymore, this is getting too real." And then holy shit, what followed had me rolling on the floor laughing. Tim, please never change, you're amazing.
i love your donkey kong country video so much, its so flippin funny. ive watched it like 5 times! Also, what a heart felt vid! 💖💙💜
Damn Tim for the safety of every underage girl around you, I HOPE you're not on projareds level
Thanks for sharing. Life can be rough. Great video. Supposed to be DQ news on Friday.
People who get overly defensive at criticism or dismissal of God of War have never read a book or seen a single movie. Not one
This video was 45 minutes long? I guess time flies when you're having fun. Thanks for all the fantastic videos in 2018, looking forward to 2019. Did that comma splice bug you?
