If you believe this, you must also believe that the 2010s didn't start until 2011. This only makes sense when you are referring to decades in order, as in "the 202nd decade", which is not how anyone talks about decades.
@@shoopj The first decade of the 21st century was 2001-2010, the second is 2011-2020. If you want to say "best of the 201xs," go ahead. Ten years is *a* decade, but it is not a *the* decade.
One of my favourite ever things is the final 30 seconds of his 2h55 Pac-Man review, where he's sat at the editing desk, reassuring viewers that the *next* review (Tokimeki Memorial, which he was finishing up the editing of at that moment) would *definitely* be significantly shorter than the Pac-Man one. "Mark my words!" he says, with the nearly-finished Tokimeki review in front of him at that moment. *Definitely* shorter! The Tokimeki Memorial review: 6 hours long 😂

Undertale bit got me. You’re an amazing human being and even if you feel what you’re doing isn’t meaningful or substantial enough, your passion is palpable and that sort of passion is contagious. I and I assume many others have been inspired by your videos to create and be creative, to just be ourselves, in a way that seems also silly to admit. You are sharing something wonderful, and regardless of whether a given video lives up to your desires, you shouldn’t overlook the impact you have on others. It’s true you put on a silly persona, but there’s an authenticity to how wholebuttedly you throw yourself into that silliness, to the point that it becomes actually genuine. Please know that you are loved and appreciated and inspiring.
I agree with what you said, but I also agree with Tim. Undertale is the kind of game that makes you feel insignificant/uncreative. They made so much with so little. It’s like great guitar solos and classic song writing. You feel like you should be able to do it too, but you can’t.

I remember reading your articles back in the "action button dot net" days and really hating your "new games journalism" style that seemed overly pretentious and contrarian for the sake of cool irony. In the years following, I think high school me was just jealous of your ability to purely like what you liked and dislike what you disliked, regardless of what series or developer the game came from. You don't know me, and I'm not trying to pretend to know you, but now I really enjoy the stuff you put out. Unless I hate it. This one, I do not hate. Keep being you, man.
Tim, as someone who started reading your blog because of your Bioshock Infinite review, I have to admit this to you. I genuinely laughed out loud when you put up Bioshock Infinite as the game of the decade and thank you so much for that.
There is no chance we won’t be clamoring for another Tim Rogers game of the 2020s video in 10 years. You may not have achieved what you wanted in game design yet, but your videos are all tiles in an amazing, personal, hilarious mosaic. There’s no one who does what you do, and you are deeply appreciated.
Tim: If there is anything full of life and color it is these videos you make and the stories you share. You're no sort of jerk. C'mon man that part made me cry. Hang in there Tim
When I came to this video summation of the 10 best games of the decade, I did not expect to come incredibly close to crying in front of roommate for the first time after hearing hints of the life story of the man who wrote it. This is probably one of the more heartfelt and beautiful things I’ve ever seen, I can just feel the emotions oozing out of every part of it. So uh, good job.
Dark Souls, it's sequels, and the influence it's had on the industry is LITERALLY the only reason I didn't completely give up on video games back in 2012. It finally feels like at least SOME developers are making games for me again. If fallen order had come out even five years ago it would've been either a samey open-world game with no level design to speak of, or a completely linear rehash of force unleashed with bad god of war combat. The fact that I'm genuinely enjoying a star wars game in 2019 that isn't just my 10th replay of kotor II is insane, and it's all thanks to dark souls. Dark Souls 1 is my favorite game of all time with a bullet, a masterpiece of the highest order, literally no amount of praise is enough. You'll hear no complaints from me.
A man in New York writes a 6 hour audio book about a game that rejuvenates a need to visit his childhood home to rekindle the memory of summers there between 1985 and 1990. Feelings were had. We are shattering animals. Video games forever.

Dude, the prose in here is so tasty I want to scoop it up with a spoon and eat it. Especially at the end there for Dark Souls. I want to read your books man. Let people read them. I guarantee you that people will support you if you do because most people enjoy seeing people do the things they love. No offense to the other hard working folks at Kotaku but your videos are the only ones I watch on here.

I will feel great sadness Edit: After having seen your video game of the decade, and the story behind it, and no mention of Dragon Quest at all, the depths of my sadness cannot be known. I had no idea you developed your own game, I'm going to buy it as soon as I can. I hope we can help get your game's cost paid!
Before watching the video, I thought that there were only 2 options. That DQXI would be his #1 game of the decade, or that DQXI would be his #2 game of the decade. To not only not see it in the top 10, but not see it as an honorable mention, is incredibly shocking. No hate btw as I like his list, but it just surprised me.

I watched your GDC talks in my first year of University where I studied game programming and proceeded to follow you on socail media and then through Kotaku as you got the job. You have had quite a large influence on half my decade through your writings and videos. You've kinda been a role model for me. Thanks.
Tim thanks for this, enjoyed every minute. You represent to me the blueprint of a what i want a successful content creator to be. One who truly believes in empathy, kindness and diversity in games and also in life. There are far too many hate-mongering and angry, privileged, small-minded people on youtube right now (and life too, I guess). Your popularity gives me hope that the hate-filled you-tubers (and gross, mean people generally) will die off during the next decade. I hope you keep on fighting the good fight, and continue to do so even if/when you put your many talents elsewhere. Thanks for putting up with all the psychopath comments etc, I really appreciate that even with the constant barrage of hate from gamergate asshats you continue to make great stuff. Seriously, I really appreciate that you continue to make beautiful videos and games, which will hopefully stand the test time long after those axe-grinders are long gone. . You deserve happiness and fulfilment, so whatever else you want to do in the next decade is cool by me. Obviously I hope that I can continue to reap the rewards of consuming whatever work you make in the future, but mostly I just want you to be happy as you have brought me incalculable happiness over the years. Your health and happiness comes first, whether I get the privilege of enjoying your games/writing/content/novels/TV(?) is obviously much less important. As a consumer of media it's far to easy to forget that (especially considering the rise of demanding Patreon and Twich sub's etc) Also heck yes, stripped down pure videoball is exactly what i need right now, WHAT A REVEAL TOO !. I promise I will play it with my friends, and i will appreciate the privilege of doing so. Thank you for everything, tim. (I also wish a long and happy life for D'Babbis too of course)
Hey Tim, Thanks for the pointer to your podcast appearance, just listened. I spent the early 2010s getting my masters of education, have since been teaching high school, this year moved to Nagoya and am teaching there. There are dregs of feeling that I am doing the right thing, but even on this path, there are lots of ways in which I feel my work is not truly productive in the way it should be. Just wanted you to know I resonated with your sentiments around sense of purpose. If I used twitter I’d hit you up but I figure if I haven’t started yet I may as well stay offa there. Warm regards.

I liked because I am currently finishing that same part of my bachelor's thesis on the translation of realia in the English release of the manga Lucky Star. And before someone asks: no, I wasn't joking.
@@penttikoivuniemi2146 honestly I'd like to know a little more. I've never actually read the lucky star manga in any language, does the official english translation make some weird decisions or something?
@@PandaXs1 There are some weird and interesting decisions, mostly its just a pretty poor translation by someone who is unlikely to be a professional translator with a ton of interference from Japanese. Which is a shame, I hoped I'd find some overarching strategy and/or clever translation decisions, but on the other hand it's a pretty good example of what manga translations often are. I actually kinda chose it on a whim, I had never read it before in any language either, I just knew I wanted to look into the translation of realia in a manga. I had watched the anime though and like it well enough. Anyway, I went looking for a suitable series I could easily and legally get my hands on, saw Lucky Star, and figured it'd be filled to the brim with what I wanted to research, so I ordered the first volume in Japanese and bought the English translation on Book Walker's web-service.
@@penttikoivuniemi2146 hmm, Lucky Star did come out in English in 2009, it's not too surprising the translation isn't good. on the other hand ANN says the translator was someone Japanese (???), I wonder if that has something to do with it.
@@PandaXs1 Yeah, it was definitely translated by a Japanese person, and quite certainly not a professional. Her English is fluent enough if we only look at grammatical accuracy, but it's ridiculously non-idiomatic at times. The source text's Japanese interferes with the translation's English in ways that make it clear the translation was just given to someone who could read the language and she probably wasn't paid that well or not given much time to work on it.

You don't know me, and I'm not trying to pretend to know you, but now I really enjoy the stuff you put out. Unless I hate it. This one, I do not hate. Keep being you, man.
Thank you Tim Rogers for being you! You’re videos are a service to mankind.
Dear Tim Rogers,
I would sit down for an 87 hour-long video of you talking about video games.
He's about a third of the way there in a handful of vids on his personal channel Action Button.
Tim:
If there is anything full of life and color it is these videos you make and the stories you share. You're no sort of jerk.
C'mon man that part made me cry.
Hang in there Tim
Ahhh, how i've yearned for another "HELLOUGHH"! I was just thinking a few hours ago that we've not had any Tim goodness for a while
When I came to this video summation of the 10 best games of the decade, I did not expect to come incredibly close to crying in front of roommate for the first time after hearing hints of the life story of the man who wrote it. This is probably one of the more heartfelt and beautiful things I’ve ever seen, I can just feel the emotions oozing out of every part of it. So uh, good job.
Hearing that nutcracker music brought a smile to my face.
Probably the most unique and original top 10 list I’ve ever seen. Loved the brutal honesty!
Souls-like games are all I play anymore tbh..
A man in New York writes a 6 hour audio book about a game that rejuvenates a need to visit his childhood home to rekindle the memory of summers there between 1985 and 1990. Feelings were had. We are shattering animals. Video games forever.
Oh wow, telegraphing his ff7r to cyberpunk review bridge on his way out at Kotaku. Really leaves the impression that Tim either plans these things out well in advance, or gets obsessed with ideas that can't let go of him. Either way, great vid.
This guy is just a run on sentence personified into a human being and I love it
I kinda teared up during the Videoball bit.
Me too friend, I was crying buckets by the end - You can watch the trailers for videoball and his GDC talk about it if you search on youtube.
Discovered Tim's videos randomly and now I watch them all. The length doesn't bother me. I enjoy the personal stories.
How in the world is this video about the best games of the decade SHORTER than a video about a nominal update to an existing controller? Tim Rogers. That's how. Bless this man.
Killer Queen at #2 is just Tim Rogers experiencing fighting games for the first time :P
I still watch and listen to Tim's Kotaku videos religiously. Keep these posted Kotaku. PLEASE.
“And ya know what? Prince of Persia is kind of like Dark Souls” got me to laugh and like and comment.
- signed, the performance-capture actor for Deadman & Higgs in Death Stranding
Your voice is like careening down I-35 in a Winnebago in neutral while everyone else is thirty miles over the speed limit.
I love it.
I’m shocked at your naming “Tomodachi Life” as the best game of the decade.
Tim's videos always make me laugh throughout. "You Died HUNGRY" is probably my favorite edit ever! Thanks for the videos, Tim. They always lift my spirits.
Tim.
I just paused the video before it even began.
I know what Dragon Quest XI means to you.
If you do not give it your game of the decade.
I will feel great sadness
Edit: After having seen your video game of the decade, and the story behind it, and no mention of Dragon Quest at all, the depths of my sadness cannot be known.
Top 3 mentions of cars Tim Rogers interacted with of the decade, 2 of which were left behind by friends who moved:
11:38 2007 Mazda 3 sedan
13:37 1999 Nissan Altima
30:30 2007 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor
i still miss that CVPI
never thought i'd miss it, though i had never had to ride the new york subway three days in a row after a millimeter of rain fell two hours after rush hour five days ago
Even though Dark Souls is nowhere near my favorite game of the decade, I would agree that is THE game of the decade.
After 10 hours of watching Tim Rogers videos, I started talking... LIKE THIS.
Nice video. I think me and my friends will have to try out VideoBall final tune sometime on a saturady night.
As a consumer of media it's far to easy to forget that (especially considering the rise of demanding Patreon and Twich sub's etc)
Also heck yes, stripped down pure videoball is exactly what i need right now,
WHAT A REVEAL TOO !.
I promise I will play it with my friends, and i will appreciate the privilege of doing so.
Thank you for everything, tim.
(I also wish a long and happy life for D'Babbis too of course)
Rip NieR:Automata. The masterpiece no one played.
You are the best Tim, your videos and podcast have helped me through some very tough times. Thank you.
I want to see Tim Rogers and Brian Gilbert from Polygon make a video together, it would be the ultimate fusion of bespectacled weirdness.
Nah, they'd hate each other.
I’m a simple man, I see a Tim Rodgers video and I click
Hey Tim,
Thanks for the pointer to your podcast appearance, just listened.
Dear Tim Rogers, I really wish I found you sooner. I only started following your creations this past year. You are my voice of the decade. Please continue to be you in 2029.
The "Hello" of the decade
Its good to know that Tim Rogers will, by his own declaration, not make another game of the decade list, but he will continue the decennial bibby mimbus award. May it last till the man is grey and curled.
3:37 "Then we drove literally ten hours to Burning Man for a 'Team-Building Exercise...'" What sort of team-building exercise is that?!
Tim, please make another game of the decade in 2029. I will still listen.
The true story here is Tim Rogers and his questionable and precarious modes of transportation.
Tim is literally the only video games journalist/personality worth paying attention to. Prove me wrong.
First 10 minutes: Methods and Materials
Man I just remembered reading your "Sticky Friction" article back in 2010. Just now realizing that was you! Cheers to a decade of nice work!
tfw you've read some of Tim's writing back and the 2000's and people complain about his videos now being too long lol
You ran 2 miles in 9:58?!?!? Mr. Rogers will you never cease to amaze me.
"I could write a 3 hour video about any of these games."
Prophetic.
Sorry for triple dipping, but the "YOU DIED....HUNGRY" at the end must be noted. I laughed. Hard.
Wow, that wish about 2020 sure jinxed it.
I love your videos and they are inspiring to me just like watching Adam Savage gush about his box collection or his button collection or his helmet collection makes me feel inspired. I am inspired by watching someone care deeply about something enough to study and articulate about it so clearly and in such an entertaining way. Thank you, Mr. Rogers. I hope you are not dead in 10 years.
I don’t at all relate to the people who complain about Tim’s videos being long.
the best thing to happen on a monday - a new video from my hero tim rogers
Nobody:
Tim Rogers: Flappy Bird is the 8th best video game of the decade
I’ve never commented on any of Tim Rogers content. So for my only comment of the decade on his work. Great job Tim.
Souls-like games certainly made a stamp on the last decade.
“This is the dark souls of ______”
Sekiro is the dark souls of the dark souls games.
that is the joke
This is the gran turismo of comment simulators
Callum noooo wayyyyy
@@andyespinozam nah, dark souls is the dark souls of dark souls games, sekiro is just the dark souls of soulslike games. Funnily enough, donkey kong jungle freeze is the dark souls of mario games, and guitar hero is the dark souls of dead genres
That is some Professional Product Placement™ there Tim, well done.
r we just going to ignore tim is 40, he looks like he's in his early 20's thats crazy. is he a vampire?
This guy's 50 years old? Talk about blessed gene.
“Fortnite the shooting is good the building is bad” never a truer word said!
I actually saw someone say that they prefer other battle royale games other than Fortnite because there your target does not instantly become a 10-story building after one shot.
Simon Day the building is what makes it different in gun battles, it is a freaking video game not reality
That wish during the killer queen segment couldn't have been further from the truth in hindsight.
tim rogers. if you want videoball to recoup the money. you're going to have to. develop a switch port. sorry.
Thank you, excellent video as always. Please never stop doing what you’re doing.
Dragon quest is my favorite game series
Dragon quest 11 is my favorite game in my favorite series
Waiting 50 minutes but no dragon quest ....... Wtf 😂
Dragon Quest is the game of the last century.
