- Wow. This video completely caught me off guard. I was not ready for this.
In this video I react to Alice in chain's Rooster.
Although, I found the lyrics to be a little mysterious, the imagery in the video was shocking yet an amazing representation of some of the events in the vietnam war.
I will continue my Alice in Chains Journey with more tracks off of the Dirt album, so stay tuned.

Yep, Jerry wrote it about/for his father, who's nickname was Rooster. It was actually the first step in them rebuilding their relationship. Jerry has said many times that this was the most important song he's ever written. Also, became a kind of an unofficial veteran song.
I’m not sure if you know this yet or not but the rooster was actually the nickname given to Jerry’s father, who served in the Vietnam war. It’s a very deep song, indeed. Glad that this is up again. Some suggestions for you:
Rotten Apple
What the Hell Have I
Grind
We Die Young
Angry Chair
Rain when I die
Dirt
Confusion
I’m sure someone will suggest more but I also suggest listening to them live as well. Down in a Hole from MTV unplugged is a good one, or love hate love if you want to see more of a powerhouse performance. Anything live from the Moore is great. Keep the Alice In Chains coming man. Thanks for the reaction.
Justin Jacobs Oh wow I didn’t know that, thank you for sharing. :)
I also recommend Junkhead and sick man brutal lyrics about drug addiction.
Jerry Cantrell's father served in Vietnam
AIC is the best Rock band from the 90s. Icons in every sense. Your reaction brought tears to my eyes. That's what art is supposed to do. Subscribed.
Alice is best live bro... Love Hate Love at the Moore Theatre!!! You won't regret it!!!
To really behold the power of Layne Staley's voice, you must listen to Love, Hate, Love live at the Moore Theater in Seattle, WA.
Layne is my favorite singer of all time-knowing his life story only makes his voice that much more agonizing!
Such a talented singer with such an amazing gift-gone, but will never ever be forgotten! 💔😭🤘🏻❤️♾️
RIP,
Layne Thomas Staley,

Grunge bands are well known for putting dark and deep lyrics
dope stuff my guy
They're harmony is purely ETHEREAL 🎶♥️🎶
Hind sight... I'm not only rediscovering them. I have endless chills.... best voice ever, period. 🎶♥️🎶
R.I.P Good Men
I missed the Vietnam War by months. Drafted, then Nixon resigns, and lots of guys exhaled collectively. Every young person in 1973 KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT I'M SAYING. THEY BE PICKING IT UP, AND SHOWING THEIR PEARLIES RIGHT AS THEY READ THIS. Did we NOT go on a party streak that lasted longer than a week? Don't tell your kids. Now Alice in Chains is the penultimate heavy metal band to dig out the Darkness of man and tries to bring it to light, and they be sounding VERY SERIOUS ABOUT IT. Lead guitarist (uhhh, I meant "lead as*kicking guitarist," Jerry Cantrell, with bass-pounding Mike Inez, fallen angel Nobody-but-Nobody's-Voice-is-EVER-confused-as-mine lead singer Layne Staley, and thoughtful drummer/founder, Sean Kinney, performed this song in honor of Cantrell's father, who was in the sh*t during the VW. The "Rooster" is actually a shorter version for the rare honor of being called "Rooster Gunney" in the Vietnam War. That was the guy, normally the platoon leader, that walked tall, talked little, and let his M60 LMG do his yardwork. Key to being the Rooster: On patrol, you WANNA be on it with the Rooster, cuz it meant you probably were coming back to camp with a trail of dead enemies in your wake. The power and emotion of this song makes this the premier Vietnam Vets contemporary song. The midsong Cantrell explosion is nonparellel of most heavy metal songs. I was lucky enough to party with Mike Inez at Matt Sorum's (GnR drummer) house in Laurel Canyon and he was real.
You talked over the part where he said "they spit on me in my homeland' which did happen to returning vets from Viet Nam, you may hear some say it never happened but it did, just as it happened some would tell the children of severing troops that they hoped their parent would be killed by the forces of The North. Bad times.
Great reaction to this absolutely brilliant song!!
His dad was the song about his dad experience in Vietnam 😀😃🙂🙃😊😇😀
I wish reaction channels would do sort of a follow up in a few days to comment on comments and perhaps give their perspective on the song after looking into the meaning of the lyrics, back story of the song etc. Your reaction though; very good - it felt genuine and natural and as good as can be.
Love hate love (live at the Moore), is a must listen!!
Godsmack also took their name from an Alice In Chains song title off DIRT as well as sampling the sun logo.
I hate them for doing that.
Agreed, that was not right... Also a side note: that is Jerry Cantell's younger brother playing their father In the video, in case no one mentioned that small tidbit of info.
@@pattylawler3999 The actor playing Jerry Sr. is James Elliot
Jerry's dad was the Rooster.
What a powerful song, we severely mistreated our vietnam vets, we need a parade in their honour.
We needed to welcome them home instead of treating them as the monsters our government trained them to be.
I guarantee you a Vietnam Vet would tell you what I stated is no bluff.
The approach they received from the ones who sent them all to die is sickening. It's what makes me worry most for the conflict in Ukraine because it's exactly what Vietnam was: a third-party conflict that we, as protectors of democracy, just *had* to get involved in.
Let me ask one question: Did *anyone* win the Vietnam War? We certainly didn't.
@@TheAssassin2299 people say nam won. But people still die from land mines.
Well done for using the word sombre, which is spot on for their music and especially this song! Awesome :)
Jerry's dad was in Vietnam and his nickname over there was Rooster. Great tune, love it.
This is one of those songs that will stick with you for the rest of your life. Every time I listen to it, I still get chills.
I love every member of Alice In Chains. Sadly the vocalist, Layne Staley, died of an overdose around 2002 or so. That guy suffered so much with addiction and depression. Hope he finally found peace.
I’m not sure but I think the father was what was called a tunnel rat. A tunnel rat would go into enemy tunnels to ether flush them out or kill them. I heard this a long time ago so I may be wrong.
Yes that was his dad his nickname was rooster
Lots of reaction channels out there. You guys are legit and real. Enjoy both of your reactions to these videos bro. Keep it up!
PINK FLOYD. Any song.
Does anyone ask how this brilliant video was made?
One of my favorites....I'd have to say that Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies album is probably my favorite. That album just had a whole different tone and feeling to me. So good
I'm seeing them live with breaking benjamin tonight!!!! Can't wait!!
Check out Voices by AIC. This tract is from the album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. Jerry Cantrell does the singing. Melody is awsome...
He was the roosyter
Layne and Jerry are probably the best harmonizing guys ever
Check out their "unplugged" concert. Off the charts good.
You talked through the best lines about being spit on in his homeland. And Yes the guitsrists Dad wrote this
I don’t think Godsmack ripped them off. More like used their sound as a foundation to build on. I like Godsmack
I love AIC and I love Godsmack too. I’ve tried to compare the two and I just don’t see it. Everyone says Godsmack is just an AIC cover band and that couldn’t be further from the truth. They’ve been around for over 30 years and I still love them just like I did in 99
His dad was a soldier
You’re spot on with Godsmack! They did rip them off! However, Layne’s voice, holy hell!! Like no other-dude!
Wasn't ripped off as Sully has said the single reason he got into singing was from hearing Layne sing
The more i listen to aic the more i hate godsmack.... very nice, your learning
TF R U wearing? Angel shirt? BTW ...m60 = Vietnam BAR = Korea.. what planet do you have to be from to not know that?
The subjectivity of music is a beautiful thing, but not even a nostalgic nod from a much larger collective is a little dumbfounding. 321 views in 3 weeks🤔😔.. Irrelevant in the grand scheme, but SMH at the convergence of circumstances that produced this result!🤦♂️
