I've always found Bournonville to be super cute. Love these videos and especially the way you sort of model constructive criticism during your commentary. You aren't afraid to point out little mistakes but are never overly harsh on yourself. This is such a valuable example for young dancers learning to critique themselves. I always worry about my students beating themselves up watching performance videos instead of processing the performance and trying to learn and grow. Thanks for being an excellent and positive role model for all of us!

Thank you so much Eleanor! I am never fond of hearing people just bash themselves to death. Sometimes they are just looking for compliments, but many really hate watching themselves. But you have to see what you are doing to improve. So I try to be as honest as I can!

Katie I just want to say thank you, because its due to all these commentary videos, I notice when the dancers are tired or when their legs are probably dead! I went to see Giselle yesterday and my friend turned to me and said (after the Friend's Dance) "How are they not tired?" and I looked at her right in the eye: "Can't you see their chest moving? I don't think they can feel their legs right now." Which made me appreciate the dancer so much more, so thanks Katie :)

Katie you are such a beautiful dancer! It's so interesting to see a NYCB dancer interpret a Bournonville piece. Some how the fast foot work SAB trained dancers to be able to do agrees with the Bournonville style-- very clean feet and really understated upper body movement. You are so extremely musical and your petit allegros are amazing. Such a lovely role. Thank you so much for posting.

Thank you for sharing this!!! I adore Bournonville -- so deceptively difficult yet gracious and warm, and you carried it off gorgeously. From the comments, it looks like this was some people's first exposure to Bournonville, so it's wonderful that you are bringing people to this special piece of ballet's history, which, as you said, is still widely performed and appreciated today. I'm going to watch this a million times, it is so beautiful and sweet and truly the essence of the style.

I love Bournonville, his tarantellas are the best. I've heard the steps are small because old stages used to be much smaller. Katie you make such a difficult pas de deus look so effortless.

Knowing that you have struggled with petit allegro as you mentioned before it adds more sparkle to your performance. So beautiful and light! So much talent, you two filled that stage. Bournonville helped a little (my body remembers it) but you two are shining!
If anyone reads it we must remember that girls had super strong ankles and feet but shoes weren't sturdy enough to do so much on pointe. The Italians liked the tricks and started to require harder shoes and more and more steps were explored.

Very nice. I remember doing this pas de deux in à compétition last year for my company . And you are right. The pas de deux is incredibly difficult to do... Not so much because of partnering but because it looks like nothing and it should look like fun all the time. But it is a joy to dance and I remember always feeling better after it (exhausted but much better :)) but you are really cute in it

    •  6 років тому +1

Kathryn Morgan but you have to admit it is very nice to do, especially if you like these kinds of I will say "cutesy" pas de deux.
Either way, at least it doesn't exhaust in an emotional way, like some other pas de deuxs can :)

This ballet is beautifully done! As a professional musician I can relate to how you said simple and precise is so challenging. I find that to be true of classical composers, especially Mozart. Kathryn~ What a lovely video and commentary! OMG this is SO beautiful! I love the Flower Festival PDD and your execution was just wonderful. If this is the original Bournonville choreography (which I believe it is) then copyright on the choreography (as well as the music) has most definitely expired by now - I mean, the guy died in 1879 :) The stage design / adaptation / interpretation by NYCB could theoretically be a different story but there's not a terrible amount of that here so I'd say you're pretty safe.

Hi Kate! I always appreciate your content even though my experience with ballet can be summed up with 1 year of classes when I was a teen! But still, I love attending performances every time I have the chance. It would be very funny and interesting if you could make a video about "ballet myths in movies - debunked". In the '90s there was this huge trend of movies focused on ballet and dancing in general and I think a lot of them were packed with stereotypes. I really like your sense of humour I think you could comment on some of those movies in a very funny and yet informative way.
