Just pulled a 2008 xterra engine to swap to my frontier. You do not have to remove the exhaust manifold to get it out. There is enough clearance also if you don't want to crawl under and cut 30 zip ties on the transmission just disconnect all the wires on the engine it takes about 5 mins and you can leave the harness attached to the transmission and move it out of the way.
You do not have to remove the coolant cross over pipe on the rear of the engine for the top two transmission bolts.
For those of you who want to know how long it takes......I started outside on the ground then after 2 hours I pushed it into the shop (had another project in the way) and spent another 4 hours of disassembley so 6 hours to get it out. Heat shield on the passenger side is the biggest pita other than that it's just a lot of bolts and tight spaces but not anything you can't swing a swivel and 1/2 extensions in.

How about removing the front end and pull it out with the trans and transfer case all as a one ? Or it’s more time and work?
I’m thinking to swap to VK56,so i ‘ll have to do it anyway.

Thanks for this. I am dreading do this but thanks for the tip on the engine harness and exhaust headers. That passenger heat shield is a bastard. I just dropped my tranny thinking it was making the noise but now Im pretty sure it's a crank bearing.

@@therockandrollcreeps5804 probably bent the shit out of that stupid thing. If you pull enough off the top of the engine there should be clearance. Might not even need to pull it if the headers can stay on

Nicely done. Doing a swap on my 2014. Found a really good price for a 2016 with 31k @ $1500. Not certain I will do it myself yet. Seems pretty straight forward and your video was a great help. I wished I was more gifted with recording such stuff to share/post. Found some helpful hints in the comment section as well so thanks guys for sharing those as well. Thats why I love videos like this, cause it gives you at least some idea ot what you're getting into before you think about trying it

Great video, much appreciate you sharing the process. Bought 2008 Frontier V6 4.0 with 145k miles that had misfire, replaced all regular maintenance stuff then shortly after on way back from Home Depot something happened to engine. It lost most of the power and started making the same noise as this one. Very tempted to do Titan 5.6 swap as it seems nearly impossible to find this engine with less miles for less than $2200 in Northern California.

It’s a manual transmition,so you apply a lot of load on the crank by the clutch. Remember, the block is alloy.
It’s more a hard driving habbit, then an engine issue IMO. Release the clutch a little smoother betwin the shifts,it’s not a racing truck. In HR versions of VQ Nissan reenforcered the ladder and many more components so it can endure more punishment.

I wish I could find a guy like this to help me do mine, I'd rather pay him than any of the worthless mechanics in my area. Fk, the reason I'm watching this is I had a mechanic do the timing chain on mine, and not only did he screw the timing on the exhaust cam up but he didnt change the oil (which he charged me for), nearly clogged the oil pickup with RTV silicone, pretty sure he damaged the oil pump the same RTV (takes like 10-15 seconds now to get oil pressure from cold start) , stripped a coil pack bolt on the valve cover, and God knows what else I have yet to discover. Charged me $3500 to literally fk my engine. Rather than spend any more money on this engine think I'm gonna swap it out. So much for trying to do preventative maintenance with a "professional"... if you know any pyromaniacs that have an itch send them over to PM Automotive in Metairie Louisiana
