Eddie Vedder has one of those iconic voices that’s instantly recognizable. Many singers have tried to reproduce it, but in most cases they’re getting it all wrong. Let’s spend some time listening and breaking down his approach and develop a healthy perspective on his tone... Lot's to dive into!
Great video as always. Also, for anyone who reads this: Chris' videos on youtube led me to his free voice lessons led me to buy his online singing course and I couldn't be happier with it. I've been singing for about 20 years now, starting out by just trying to sound like my idols (Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley...), I had voice lessons and took online courses.
While I credit all of them with improving my singing, Chris does something that is absolutely unique (in my experience): he truly gives you the tools to explore all the great possibilites YOUR OWN voice has. This cannot be rated high enough. If you are truly interested in becoming a better singer, at least check out his free course.

Because he often helds himself back in the Studio.
They used reverb and echo in the studio, which I think he didn't like; they remixed Ten without it.

Excellent analysis. It drove me crazy for at least a decade hearing all the imitators misunderstand his voice and listeners seemingly not notice or care. One of my favorite Vedder vocal moments is in Elderly Woman, the climb and eventual peak with "my God it's been so long, never dreamed you'd return" I've probably sang it over a hundred times trying to get it right and never been satisfied.

Good old eddie, my wife loves pearl jam actually, she knows all the lyrics and stuff, man the 90s gave us amazing rock singers. Have you heard the soundtrack eddie did for "into the wild" (great movie by the way, directed by sean penn), its a surprisingly good album, it has some of his more subdued songs, lots of those soulfull notes there, its worth a listen for sure

Also, a fun fact about Eddie-his main vocal influence is Bono. Most people don’t know that. But if you go listen to albums like Joshua Tree, you can definitely hear the influence.
Eddie has the GOAT vibrato 13:33. I’m curious if he’s ever mentioned having vocal training at all or if he’s just instinctively amazing. Eddie’s vocal timbre and the intensity he sings with can’t be duplicated. Really interesting analysis!

I always wondered that too. I know before PJ he sang in a few other bands. There are great live videos of his band Bad Radio here on UA-cam. They had a lot of good songs.

Chris, this video was actually a huge breakthrough in me understanding my own voice. I have a pretty deep, resonant voice like Eddie so it can be pretty hard to find singers to emulate and study how they utilize a voice that's that low. I know this is an old video, so don't know if you'll see this, but it would be really cool if you could do a video about basses using examples from rock and mainstream music sometime, since I feel like we tend to get kind of left out in the conversation lol. Thanks for these videos, they're more helpful than you probably even realize!

Tyoko Rider Don’t think you understand what it would mean, using his techniques, would completely fuck up your voice after time, you wouldnt be able to sing most songs since your voice is busted.. You could use his sort of mumble and somewhat eerie voice in a safe way however, it definitely would not sound the same but yh... It’s what you have to work with

experimenting with my voice was - and is - daunting especially with people around the house, but you’ve made it so much fun that I don’t really care if I sound bad/stupid.
More abstractly though, I think you express a very Adlerian way of the world; if you haven’t read it already, I think you’d enjoy the book ‘The Courage to be Disliked’. These videos and exercises have been a perfect medium to put the concepts in the book into real world situations.

Finally, yes! I've been saying this about Eddie's voice for years. Good to know someone else can actually hear him properly.
I think explaining Eddie's singing style technically is a great project in itself, thanks much, for he's my all time favorite...
...though I think it should be added how and why he (or any other singer/musician) comes up with their style of singing/playing.
And I think it has greatly something to do with the personal philosophy of the person: which with Vedder, I think is 'no pretension, not singing to impress but just to express'... which, 'translates' into his style of singing and in all its technicalities and choice of lyrics...
Cuz we might be able to learn or actuate/perform all the correct technical attributes of Vedder's singing styles, but without knowing 'philosophically, where he/it is emanating from' (to express uncompromisingly, not to impress, which innately entails basing what/how you are or what/how you do [sing/play] on others' approval), ...
...we might not still fully understand and truly feel-ingly perform, his style...
(Or any other singer/musician for that matter...)
(For example, if one's personality is more of the wanting-to-impress-others kind, however he learnt and perfected Vedder's singing style, it will still sound fake or 'un-Vedder-ish', much like a jazzer by heart playing the notes of a Mozart piece perfectly.... His real [singing] 'feel' will 'show' inadvertently...)

@@Rickbassplayer Vedder gets the sound by just having a very low and resonant voice. He has a surfer dude affect from all of his years in San Diego... Surfer dude with a huge, low voice.
Stapp on the other hand, chews his words like he was trying to be John Wayne. It's not that those sounds are outside of Stapp’s range, but he braces for all of them, to intentionally round all of them out, regardless of where they are in the phrase or his register. When you do that rounding to imitate Vedder, you really get Pearl Jam a la Stapp.
You’d have a hard time making that part of “Just Breathe” in this video sound good with Stapp’s drawl. Instead of low-but-fragile it would sound heavy and plodding. If you don't have a lot of resonance down there, you’re going to sound thinner than he does. But that's just life. He could trade places with Johnny Cash, Brad Roberts of the Crash Test Dummies, or Isaac Hayes, if Seattle alt-rock lent itself to that range. Other people can't.
I actually think it's to Vedder’s credit that he can belt as high and as controlled as he can, given his resting position puts him squarely in baritone, in a time and genre that favoured tenors and contratenors.

Great analysis of Eddie’s voice! Really got a lot out of it! For more low end style singers, I’d love to hear either Mark Lanegan and/or Rufus Wainwright. To my ear they both have great tone, vibrato, and do cool things with compression. Thank you once again!🙏

ive tried to emulate adam and from what i can gather its super compressed form the diaphram combined with a very specific type of throat and voice muscles. it took me years of going hoarse and losing my voice until i could find what I THINK is a similar type of distortion. Although even now its VERY easy to lose your voice because the type of distortion requires almost a perfect execution ALWAYS without causing damage quickly. Would love Chris to dissect Adams voice as its one of the most unique in rock

I love Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam is of of my fav bands, I've seen them twice and it was awesome! Question about his grit: is "compression based distortion" a different thing than distortion with using our break + vocal fry?
Watching this video I started to realise how Eddie sang the 90' and some early 00' with tones of distortion in his voice. As a Pearl Jam fan, I tried miserably to sound like him and just failed, but with some of your lessons I am understanding a lot of resonances etc. Thanks a lot, Chris, wish the best for you, salutations from Brazil.

I would love to see a video about Spencer Sotelo from Periphery. I have trouble to hit his high notes and to be that "aggressive" at the same time. Are these high notes that so called "mixed voice"?
Yes! Even if the singer isn't calling it that or aware of what is going on (as is probably the case with Eddie, we can approach with mixed voice and be much easier on our voice in the process)
OMG, i am a little late but hey... I always could feel that, listening to Creed singer or some other "singers", but i could never explain it. Like they holding cotton balls in their mouth or something is the closest thing i could come up with. I hated them for it. I could never took them serious and i hated every note coming out of them.Eddie is unique.Unparalelled.He is force of nature. Amazing voice, original voice and he became a trope codifier. So smart how you let us hear his talking voice first and that is how he sings. I was always saying to people, for the love of God listen the way that man speaks!!!!I think that was brilliant what you did. Thank you so much for doing this video. This just needed to be said and you did an incredible job explaining things just perfect.It's mind blowing watching how you hear things, understand what is going on and then explain and show and repeat everything and compering how others sing that same thing.. I am amazed.. Just perfect. I am impressed beyond words...and if i may.. Your voice is amazing. This is pure gold... and "warm Eddie Vedderish sound".. I am totally stealing that phrase😁❤️

Started vocal lessons this year for the first time and my teacher freaked out after hearing for the first time because of how much my voice apparently resembles Eddie Vedder’s. After watching this I understand now lmao. I can always instinctively tell what it feels like to sing something the same way Eddie does before trying it myself and the way he sings is how I’ve always just felt comfortable singing. Also, I thought that this is just how vibrato was done lol, never thought that the way I did it wasn’t the standard way.😅

Man I just came across your channel and I am a HUGE Pearl Jam fan I've loved them since they first came out I was 14 now I'm 38 and I'm still in love with Eddie's voice. So this video was amazing to me. Thank you. It is very hard to find someone that can get his voice right. I can't stand those cover bands that try to get Eddie's voice down and totally botch it. It's so cringy to me. I was a singer in a rock/ metal band for 17 years and the guys always wanted to do Pearl Jam but I always said no just bc I didn't feel like I could do his voice Justice. I'm rambling now but just wanted to thank you for this video. I'm hoping people can take this and learn from it as it was intended. 😀

nailed it, I talk like Eddie with an Australian accent mind you, but I have that resonance and my singing voice tends to have a similar qualities to him. Probably a little Eddie influence as a huge fan but mostly just a style that comes naturally to me.
Ed’s voice is so interesting as it is ever evolving. Check out a performance from 1991 then 1994 then 1998 then 2003 completely different sound. Gotta say his voice from 1993-1995 is so awesome. Really dropped a lot of that signature throat sound that got made fun of and pushed to a more nasally voice.
