Halston should be more celebrated than defined for his struggles. His designs are timeless and today look more minimalist, chic, and comfortable than today’s fashion.
There still exists the same danger of the designer being perceived as destroying the exclusivity of the brand. Michael Kors is another "cautionary tale." His brand has lost a lot of its value due to down-market sales. Being seen as the coolest person doing anything is something of a magic trick. Once the illusion is shattered, it's hard to ever regain the original allure. Selling to the masses can make you a lot of money, but you will never be seen as rare or special ever again. High-end fashion marketing requires a sense of exclusivity.
My first designer perfume from my 1st real paycheck at 17 year old in 1981. I still remember how it smells and how it made me feel when I wore it. I felt so beautiful.
When Halston's death was announced on World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Mr. Jennings was very sincere about it. He quoted Halston "You're only as good as the people you dress." Halston was worn by women who were in New York Society. I recently found out Debbie Reynold's purchased all the Halston gowns and caftans from The Elizabeth Taylor Estate auction. Halston is still relevant and his fashion is timeless.
She STILL doesn't speak badly of him and encourages interviewers to concentrate on his talents rather than more salacious details of his partying/sexuality.
I truly miss the simplicity and elegance of Halston's designs....and Ultrasuede. I did my senior menswear fashion project (I attended Pratt Institute from 73 to 77) in Ultrasuede. I wore the suit well into the 80s. I was also fortunate enough to secure a white Ultrasuede 'safari' jacket (that I'd wear with a navy blue silk shirt and navy blue raw silk trousers). Needless to say, you can't find that kind of elegance any more.

I was in my 20s when Halston was hanging out at Studio 54. Margaux Hemingway was in his coterie; they both seemed to be the pinnacle of glamor. Little did we know of the dark side of their lives until later, when his cocaine use became an open secret. The downfall from Halson’s drug addiction and Hemmingway’s suicide were both heartbreaking.
I first became aware of Halston as a designer while watching the film, "King Kong". When a water-soaked and unconscious Jessica Lang was fished out of a sinking yacht in mid-Pacific, it was noted that she must be a woman of quality as she was wearing a Halston gown.
Didn't know about the Netflix docudrama but I'm sure they had the good taste to leave out the Dune's drug filled summer orgies as well as Halston's predisposition for well-endowed black men. When I met him in 1980, I found him to be reserved while pleasant and generously answered the eager questions of a 20 year old fashion student. Still wear his Z-14
Back then, I guess Halston didn't think about maintaining the high glamour part while also starting a subsidiary affordable line with a different label like "Roy" or "R. F." for Roy Frowick, or "RHF" for Roy Halston Frowick, or something unrelated to his name or whatever, under a new parent company. I don't know.
As a fashion designer, specializing in ultra high end fashion, I understand the clients' complaints and mutiny 😅 It's like that. Look at fashion today: 2024& people wear yeezys/sweatpants as fashion; and females pretty much walk around looking like carbon copies of other females ... The industry doesn't put out clothing that speaks of good taste and it's the norm/standard now. ....
People like their boundaries between them and those. I strongly believe in that. He should've never sold his company to Norton Simon, instead Halston should've let them invest in it, and the deal with JC Penny shouldn't have happened. Just for the record, the Netflix series was based on an unauthorized book that came out a year after he died. I speak with his niece quite often who owns his archives. The family wasn't at all contacted for it.
I think Halston was a genius. His designs are timeless and exciting. Whenever I see pictures of his work I want to dress-up. His perfume is still my favorite.

Some flames rise up quickly, then become blasts of light, then sadly burn out more rapidly than they rose. But they were still once there. And they created a legacy. 🙂
I hate to admit this, but it did ruin his brand by partnering up with Penny’s which sucks bc he was a brilliant designer. I was born in 72 & sheesh I had forgotten all about Halston.
There were still real designers in those days, unfettered by big business. Halston's creations were a revelation. A radical departure. Corporations are quite incapable of art. The bottom line is all, and they can unintentionally destroy what the brand is even before it's born. And often after, as well. But it happens. I rememember running into a few bastardized examples with Designer labels at a thrift, who had been bought out. Their namesakes would have wept. It was truely THAT bad. Today the brand name is everything, and the corporation is smart enough to install another designer who has his own vision. Sometimes this is sucessful, and creates an entirely new look, BUT under the same brand name. Sometimes it is not, and a reshuffling occurs, usually quickly. Fashion changes. It is fleeting. One can't simply churn out the same thing year after year. It has to evolve. When the heart is gone, a new heart must beat in it's place. But calling it the same brand name, no longer has the same stigma. People buy the brand. In the days of Couture, fashionistas were loyal to the person. In the 70's and 80's, that still lingered. Halston is legendary not just for his clothes, but his image. And isn't image what fashion is all about ??? Sadly, in these complicated days, it is no longer possible to launch even a high end line without A LOT of outside money. Which means early loss of control. And the "vision" will always suffer, because of that. L'Wren Scott did, briefly before Jagger pulled the plug financially. Neither her line, nor her survived. She made truely exquisite things, but i heard faied to turn a profit. Turns out not even a boyfriend will tolerate that for long .. Couture, hand made, is mostly dead. Often only for obcenely expensive weddings. Labor costs are prohibitive, even at this exhorbitant price point. While even those like Laurent worked for others, initially, creating your very own house, like Channel, or Dior, or even Laurent, is no longer possible. It is a very costly business, and most fail early, failing to turn a profit. The business can be a real heartbreaker, for young talent. Most, if they're lucky, end up buried in an established House, hoping to rise from there. Few do. Tiny local companies may succeed in a tiny way. Even National is impossible,. without serious connections in every stage of the industry.. from advertising, manufacturing to shipping, always critical in a time sensitive seasonal business, they remain, if they're lucky, small and local. Or fail. So yeah, the days of people like Halston, are gone. And the world, i think, is poorer for it.
I’d hate for people to judge and remember me, at my worst , instead of my best.. I’ll also say this, a mark of a truly talented designer , their clothes being able to be worn 50 years later….most of these clothes, I’d wear them present day 2024
Ewan McGregor did a great job portraying him. ❤❤ I feel sympathy for him because he lost his identity; however, I believe Victor played a significant role in his downfall. It seems Halston was more interested in him than he was in Halston, and Victor acted as an opportunist, seeking fame.
😆W- Pause the video @ 10:44 - There's gotta be 1kg of blow on that tray, lol. If you look even further..(on the tray that's next to a girl who looks like Christy T*rlingt*n's twin sister)...there's a full vial of blow next to her Judith Leiber handbag
No doubt he and his friends took a lot of drugs but I think some of those images are from the recent movie about Halston and not real pics from a night at Studio 54
I have watched docs showing as his career was tanking he became rude and controlling with his staff. Everyone had to wear black and he spoke to them deplorably but they still loved him.
I would love to be able to dive into all of Halstons designs and ideas, I still feel he had a lot to offer us, but as his health wanned and the lack of strong commitment from his colleagues this did not happen .
I STILL have and wear my Halston black wool jersey cape, black crepe dress and hats- they are timeless!

I thought I was mistaken when I was recollecting purchasing one of his perfumes way back when I could still fit into one of those gowns.
I guess one would need to dig a bit deeper to know what his own influences were; Eyptian, Middle Eastern, Arabian nights?

I really love this video ,he was a genius! Amazing fashion 👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love learning about him
I’d hate for people to judge and remember me, at my worst , instead of my best.. I’ll also say this, a mark of a truly talented designer , their clothes being able to be worn 50 years later….most of these clothes, I’d wear them present day 2024
Goodness, he was so over the top! I suppose he cultivated his marketing persona.
Ewan McGregor did a great job portraying him. ❤❤
I feel sympathy for him because he lost his identity; however, I believe Victor played a significant role in his downfall. It seems Halston was more interested in him than he was in Halston, and Victor acted as an opportunist, seeking fame.
Halston...Gucci...Fiorucci.
Hugo was an escort that Halston was infatuated with. Hugo an artist- LOL.
A nobody hustler.
He has horrible breath.
No doubt from eating
Such utter snobbery from those that shunned him!!! His designs still exist to this day
He certainly does have a very pretentious accent that he affects. I am pretty sure that's not what people from Des Moines sound like!
he wanted to distance himself from his past ot seems, nothing wrong with his accent
@@seliamila1005😂
@@seliamila1005it was a lie. Like Tom ford. Tom ford has an over exaggerated speaking voice. Tom is a fraud.
I'm not surprised, at all.
I love the jumper in still today
My Mom ( who is 87 ) said she quit buying Halston when he started showing up at JCPenneys. She said she didn't feel special anymore in his clothes.
"If everyone can have it, then what's the point of having it?"
Talk about deluded senses of grandeur. Those that could afford it should simply have gotten him to do unique pieces. As in, no replicas.
Snob.
🎉🎉halston, Bill Blass & Liz clairborne were the best¡
Chics lyrics from he's the greatest dancer mentions Halsten ❤
Seeing him driving his Rolls Royce convertible on main street of Long Island's West Hampton & thinking that was odd, is he lost?
wow, I never knew any of his downfall
🤔- I'm puzzled. Did you think his brand stopped with death? (Or did you think he's "just been a bit quiet recently") 🤣🤣
The music is very distracting.
Unless Tom Ford takes over at Halston it will remain irrelevant.
I love his J C Penney clothes!
I think that Halston with smoking and drugs like cocaine that made HIV worse. Sad.
You are really out there. I guess it takes all kinds.....?
When he sold his name … he sold his soul. The drugs and Victor negatively impacted his life.
Victor 'negatively impacted' Warhol's gay porn 'oevre' too!
Does anybody know why that rectangle with rounded corners kept appearing on the left quarter line of the video?
He was such a classy and creative designer, yet he lived such a raunchy life.
Good video. Hard to watch with all the flashing lights on it.
Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci-
He looks like a still, that man is dressed to kill- I went wild- He's the greatest dancer...
I always thought selling his name was his downfall but obviously lifestyle contributed
I through they was trying to bring back his design and his fashion house as well. So what happened?
Ive been to Des Moines. What part of the city did his accent come from ?
Another amazing talent ruined by unlimited cocaine and ended by AIDS. A real genius.
I have Halston men's cologne and it's good.
Sounds pretty much like Michael Kors' story...
He looks like he has the face of a newscaster to me
