@@ThomastikInfeldVienna thanks for responding! I'm currently playing the popular hybrid combo of A+D Larsen Mediums and G+C Spirocores. On my particular cello, I absolutely love the brassy bold sound of the C Spirocore, which really sings and growls. However, the G is a little choked on this cello, and neither of the Larsens work well for me, the D being too soft and the A too piercing - too much variation between the two so the transition can sound quite extreme.
I'm due for a string upgrade so I've been looking at one of the complete sets from Thomastik - curious to try either Rondo, Rondo EXP, or Versum Solo. Seeking a soft, warm, mellow tone, but which can also really speak and sound balanced, especially with those G & D strings which I mentioned sound currently choked on my cello.
Also looking to still capture a similar vibe to the C Spirocore (would love a G string to sound that way on this instrument too, more growl and bite).
I record in a home studio so I'm not concerned about projection, so much as having a wide variety of tonal colors and balance between the strings. Especially important is not having an A string which is excessively bright or loud compared to the rest. Any thoughts on which series you think might work best based on my description? Thank you!

Wow! If TI had 5 _Herr_ Attila, we would have 378 different sets for Cello already.
I must confess that My favourite combo was Rondo XP + Spiro (Tungsten?). As Darth Sidious would say: "Power! Unlimited POWER"! Even the lower strings sounded louder and fuller than with higher DPs! Spiros have, in my hearing, the best low sound! Always warm, velvety and powerful. What caught my attention with Rondo XP was the fact that it has a powerful A + D without being that piercing screaming (sharp) high register. It's velvety too. We could hear that _Herr_ Atilla put strength while playing Chopin, and the strings don't scream, they sing. And also, he goes from very strong to _morrendo_ in a matter of tenths of seconds. What a dynamic range!
The Chopin played in this set (8:33) is the sound of Heavens. Sublime.
Please, if you can, ask him to play both Haydn's and Dvorák's themes on the RONDO XP + SPIRO. The complete first themes from Both Concertos.

@Thomastik Infield, thanks a lot for making and bringing this kind of experiments! It is something that we can hardly do by our own and especially with the great Attila.
All combinations offer a particular sound, honestly I would go for the Rondo + Rondo experience. Currently using Rondo A&D + Versum G&C.

What an amazing video! I am blown away! I adore testing strings, and I started my journey like many other cellists with Spirrocore and Larsens (Both Solo and Standard) but felt the Larsens didn't suit my early 20th century French cello very well when I upgraded to it, and after hearing that it may be better suited by Versum Solos (Also by the wonderful people at Thomastik-Infeld) I tried those. The strings had an amazing blend, and the A string and D string felt like one continuous string length. I truly did enjoy them. Ever the tinkerer though, after about a year and a half I decided to try out the Thomastik Rondos after listening to a string demo. I wanted more nuance and colors than I was getting from the Versum Solos and also more overtones in the after sound. Rondo's so far have certainly offered me that. The Rondo A string may be my favorite A string I have ever played. It is beautiful, and so full. Lots of color and expressive qualities. I 100% agree that Rondo's were made for Dvorak. I hope someday to try the Rondo XP but my luthier here in the states didn't have it and I like to support them. The D string is not my favorite, I find myself missing the blend between the A and D from Versum solos. I find 4th position on the string to be a little weak on my cello as well. That makes me a little sad as I love 4th position on the D string. If I could find a D string that matched the Rondo A string in the way Versum Solo A and D match each other I'd be very happy. A D string that sonorous and powerful with rich overtones and colors throughout the whole register would be perfect. The G string is robust but also has that textured airy quality to it. I think it is the next best string in the set. I really enjoy the warmth and power it has. The C string, is very gravely, textured, and has a warm and broad sound over a direct and focused sound like I would associate with Spirrocore, but also doesn't have as much of the metallicness of those strings either. For my tastes, The C string is not focused enough and I find myself wanting the quick and clear voice of the Spirrocore or Versum Solo C back. Maybe a warmer C without the metallicnes but also the clear and quick voicing from spirrocore. Overall, for my particular cello, the Rondo's seem a bit too aggressive, and so I am again on the hunt for my next strings. I was considering Dominant Pro, and while based on the video, it is clear that they are more matte, than shine, much like Versum Solo compared to the Rondos, they have more nuance, and I think more color potentially. I would need to hear a comparison of Versum Solo to Dominant Pro. Between the many amazing strings offered by the Thomsatik-Infeld company, Pirastro, Larsen, Jargar, and others, it seems like an endless buffet of possibility. It honestly feels overwhelming. I can say I have loved both sets I have played by Thomastik-Infeld more than those from Larsen so far. It makes me more inclined to look into what they may have to offer. Especially since all of their strings I have experience possess a superior durability and ease of playing. We will have to see which string set gets the next trial. Larsen Il Cannone, Pirastro Perpetuals, or Thomastik Dominant Pro. I even have interests in trying a pairing of Spirrocore C & G with Jargar Superior A and Special D, or Prim Orchestra Gauge A and D. I know I have my inspirations there, Jacqueline Du Pre being one of my favorite cellists of all time. I wish she could have played on Thomastik Rondo's I think they would have been a match made in heaven. If I could have the Rondo A, with a better matching D for my tastes/cello, and a similar G and C string to Spirrocore but maybe a little less brassy and while retaining the focused and direct sound I think I would have a real winner from my perspective. No matter what though, much love to the folks at Thomastik-Infeld, they are doing amazing things over there!

To me, the Dominant Pros sound the most balanced and add a dark quality to the cello. Rondo + Experience gives a very beautiful singing quality especially in the A string. The standard Rondo gives a great amount of Focus and power. The spirocore with Rondo brings out a long of nice steely and bright qualities that the Dominants don’t produce as much. The Spirocore with Dominant pro are definitely bring out a more different kind of sound, very interesting. By far, my favorite strings were the Dominant Pros and the Rondo + Rondo Experience.

There is a richness to the Rondos that the other sets don’t have, but I really love the openness and “neutrality” of sound that the Dom Pros give.
I find that the Dom Pros give the cello the most room to breathe and shape different colours while still having lots of depth and warmth.
I think Rondo XP sounds beautiful with a wide range of colours available, but doesn’t have the same “sizzle” as the rest of the set, and seems to cap out on power just a little bit.
Overall you can’t really go wrong with anything here though…

@@ThomastikInfeldVienna I tend to change combinations fairly frequently out of a desire to fiddle/experiment, but I recently came back to Versum Solo A+D/Spirocore Tungsten (med) C+G and I’m pretty thrilled. The Versum Solos are rich and textured while still being quite neutral (unlike Rondos which are beautiful but inherently coloured), and the Spiros are broad and bassy with an edgy growl that I really love for my instrument (a recent Thomas Meuwissen cello). Really immediate response, tons of power and a wide colour palette.
