- “Mindfulness of breathing is the great vehicle used by the Buddhas to save beings who are drifting and sinking in the ocean of suffering.”
- Master Tang Hoi
-----
This quote comes from the preface to the Chinese translation of the sutra "Discourse on the Full Awareness of Breathing", an ancient text dating from the third century C.E., written by the father of Vietnamese Zen Buddhism, Master Tang Hoi. In our own time, mindfulness of breathing is becoming more and more widely embraced and practiced. It is not a Buddhist practice alone. It is accessible and of benefit to practitioners of any spiritual path or those who do not identify with any formal or established spiritual path.

Metta Meditation by the Plum Village Sisters
[Metta Meditation]
May I be aware of my breath at all times
May my body be peaceful and relaxed
May my steps be gentle and at ease
and my eyes be compassionate
As an offering to myself, my parents and my loved ones.
May my feelings be peaceful and calm
May my heart and mind be fresh, light and in harmony
May joy and happiness be cultivated
As an offering to myself, to my teacher and friends
and to all creatures supporting my life.
May my mind be quiet, awake and clear
May my mind always be directed to wholesome ways
May I maintain my concentration on the beauties of life, to see the wisdom of life
As an offering to myself, to every wish of the people and to the callings of the world.
With lightness, may I always be aware of the impermanence of all that is
May I be free from craving and aversion
May I dwell in equanimity and love
May mother earth be at peace and continue to offer her love and beauty,
to forgive and embrace.
As an offering to myself, to the land of the Three Jewels and to the entire cosmos.

Here are the lyrics for what the sister is singing between the metta meditations:
Breathing in a long breath, I know I am breathing in a long breath.
Breathing out a long breath, I know I am breathing out a long breath.
Breathing in a short breath, I know I am breathing in a short breath.
Breathing out a short breath, I know I am breathing out a short breath.
Breathing in, I am aware of my whole body.
Breathing out, I am aware of my whole body.
Breathing in, I calm my whole body.
Breathing out, I calm my whole body.
Breathing in, I feel joyful.
Breathing out, I feel joyful.
Breathing in, I feel happy.
Breathing out, I feel happy.
Breathing in, with mental formations
Breathing out, with mental formations
Breathing in, calming mental formations
Breathing out, calming mental formations
Breathing in, I'm aware of my mind.
Breathing out, I'm aware of my mind.
Breathing in, I make my mind happy.
Breathing out, I make my mind happy.
Breathing in, I concentrate my mind.
Breathing out, I concentrate my mind.
Breathing in, I liberate my mind.
Breathing out, I liberate my mind.
Breathing in, all dharmas are impermanent.
Breathing out, all dharmas are impermanent.
Breathing in, I observe desire.
Breathing out, desire disappearing.
Breathing in, I observe no birth.
Breathing out, I observe no death.
Breathing in, I observe letting go.
Breathing out, I observe letting go.
Thank you!
Thank you very much. I was surprised when I thought I heard "all dharmas are impermanent" and wondered if I misheard. Not something I fully understand, but thankful for knowing that was what was sung.
@@krisk255 dharma has a lot of different meaning. One of them is phenomenon. So in this context it means that all phenomenon are impermanent
@@krisk255Maybe they are only relevant while we are alive.
Thank you!
Thank you very much!🌺🌺🌺

Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu
This is beautiful and I am grateful for it. Music has such a strong power to touch inside.
I do wonder about the precept for monks that I've read about in the Buddhist tradition of "no singing or dancing". Any clarity on why or how this has changed would be most welcome. Thank you.
🙏🙏🙏🤗🤗🤗💜💜💜
I miss Sisters of New Hamlet.
Khai thị ❤️❤️❤️🌅🌅🌅🌹🌹🌹🌍🌍🌍⚙️⚙️⚙️🙏
Wow
I would suggest short breath would come before long breath
Because when teacher Thay talks about it. We are breathing short at the beginning. As we relax we breathe deeper and longer.
Long/short Short/long, is translation for length. My teacher Thay says you follow your breathe.
🙏🙏🙏
