    I watched this some time ago, and seeing it again, it's as if I've never seen it before. So tender. So beautiful. Every part of it. And to hear the conversation between Thich Nhat Hanh and Brother David about Thomas Merton and Daniel Berrigan, and in the end about Martin Luther King, leaves me in awe. This, I can only imagine, is 'interbeing.' 💞

    It touched me so much to see Thich Nhat Hanh give Brother David a flower. Such a truly beautiful moment to see how Brother David's face lit up. I feel so grateful to have seen this video and these two incredibly vibrant and compassionate spirits together.

    As this great person, Thay put it precisely peace can never be achieved if we ignore the suffering of others. So, let's try to learn to understand the suffering of others. Thank you very much for bringing these kinds of Life changing teachings to the public!!

    Thank you for sharing! What a beautiful video, so artistically filmed of Thay Nhat Hanh and Venerable David! After my father passed last summer, I discovered one of Thay’s books on my shelf. I was captivated by his piercing words on mindfulness. I began reading more of his books and watching/listening to his Dharma lectures on a daily basis. His wisdom and his warmth helped me to overcome my father’s passing. At the same time, he transformed my understanding of Buddhism. He seriously changed my life... to live more simply, freely and with a true purpose. Watching this video of two kind extraordinary souls/friends sharing their views and spiritual understanding was a blessing. It was very personal; I felt as though I was sitting right next to them, and soaking everything in. Blessings to the folks on this wonderful film production!

    "No birth, no death." Does this mean buddhism doesn't believe there is a "first cause" for the universe? How do we account for big-bang and beginning for universe?

    • @dennisbohn1664
      @dennisbohn1664 8 років тому +2

      "No birth, no death" is a very deep and personal insight that cannot be explored in this context. I can share here that it is recorded in many Suttas that the Buddha turned away questions about whether the universe was eternal on not eternal, both or neither. These questions did not help in the path out of suffering, which was the fundamental teaching of the Buddha
      .
      The Buddha taught, "When this is, that is. From the arising of this comes the arising of that. When this isn't that isn't. From the cessation of this comes the cessation of that." Thich Nhat Hanh has called this the Buddhist Genesis. There may well have been a 'big-bang' but that also must have arisen from causes and conditions.
      The Buddha has been recorded as saying that speculation about the [e.g. first cause] of the cosmos is an imponderable... Whoever speculates about (it) would go mad and experience vexation. HTH.

      There is the theory of The Big Bang.
      The new theory is the universe is eternal then the big explosion Happened.
      Governments can send billions of dollars worth of equipment and the questions will never end.
      There are more pressing issues on our doorstep as we know.

    Even suffering is an opportunity to learn compassion...I find that always difficult when in real life children, baby's are suffering by the hands of grown ups, sometimes their own parents even. What should they learn? Compassion, when they are beaten, or neglected, tortured to death. Gassed in concentration camps. Old people dragged from their bed to die there in man made hell. That is why I cannot deal with any of these deeper thoughts, trying to make sense of it all and in my view, failing miserably at it. In essence there is suffering and non suffering. We who do not really suffer, tell others who do suffer severely, that they should learn lessons, compassion. Our suffering is minor to some cruel suffering in the world. Children starving slowly from lack of water and food. What should they learn? Little girls suffering in the hands of Daesh. (IS) and other terrorists. What should they learn? Man raping and beating them. I am done with this path, where other men tell us not to suffer, though I find some rest in the meditation music and soft and kind words by soft and kind people. Like my own mama tells me, it will all be all right, go to sleep.

    • @EricaCole1
      @EricaCole1 5 років тому +2

      As the sufferer - if you survive - you either strive to end your suffering and appreciate what it feels like not to suffer or you continue the chain of suffering. I encountered dysfunction and abuse and was surrounded by dysfunction and abuse. I appreciated compassion and a loving and peaceful environment. My children do not know the suffering I have seen or experienced. They know love, peace, and compassion. I chose to break the chain.
      As the ones who watch the suffering, if you understand that we are interconnected and a part of this earth as a whole, your love and compassion will help those who suffer...even if it's the smallest deed. I volunteered to help mentor those in poverty or who were in difficult life situations (since I can relate)and was there as a positive support in their time of darkness. I cannot feed them and their children, but they felt love and compassion, which gave them strength.
      If we all did these things as a collective -from those with money and power to those who have nothing to give - there would be less suffering in the world.
