Small town museums are the best! I always make a point of thanking the folks working in them. They are almost always volunteers who donate their time so that people passing through can get a sense of what it was like to live there. Regarding Tom Mix, you may have learned this since posting the video, but there's a memorial south of Florence where he died in a car crash.

Hello Russ. I've been a long-time subscriber to "Arizona Highways" magazine (for 55 years starting in 1967 when I was 15) and I saw many of the places you're showing in "still" images. Now you're showing me these places in videos, I'm discovering plenty of places I missed and never saw before, because I should have left the major roads and highways, like you do. I visited 15 times over the years. I learn a lot about where to go to find a safe place to spend the night, the nightmare of overnighters like me. Thank you and keep up your discoveries.

Thanks for showing my hometown, born and raised in Florence. I left Florence in 1977 when I joined the USAF for my 21 year career. So many changes in that little town since I left. I have to tell you, after your stop at the Casa Grande Ruins, you should have cut back over to Hwy 79 south of Florence. You could have taken that all the way to Tucson, passing through Cactus Forrest, the Pinal Pioneer Parkway, and many other scenic areas. Never take the Interstate when rural highways will get you there and show you more.

Been there...viewed that museum, and the court house. Interesting story about how the hangman's noose HAD to be wrapped...to do a 'proper' job. It was based ideally on the weight of the convicted criminal -- so that the neck would break, but not sever the head. The convicted was to be hanged...not beheaded. It was surprising how many died of suffocation...and not a broken neck or severed spinal cord. Very gruesome!! Many folks came out to watch the 'carrying out' of the sentence.

Oh, the memories! In 1988, after conducting business in Tucson, decided to "play tourist" around Arizona. Instead of the I-10, took US-89 (which is what AZ-79 was back then) up to Phoenix. Did a "windshield tour" of Florence. The wife and I were both volunteers back home in New Mexico and we enjoyed visiting fire stations from where we visit, so we stopped at the combination police/fire station across the street (to north) of the Courthouse, now a soccer field. We parked our pickup camper for the night at a mobile home / RV park about a half mile north of Hunt Hwy, where you turned south onto AZ-79.
And, a little bit of Florence history. Tom Mix wasn't a local hero. Florence is notorious for being where this very popular (back in the day) movie star died. In 1940, Mix had been meeting with people in Tucson. He set out in his fancy luxury Cord convertible up (then) US-80 headed for Phoenix. About 18-miles south of Florence, he came across a construction zone where they were repairing a wash-out from a recent flash flood. Being known as a "speed demon", he was unable to stop in time and swerved into the gully. A suitcase located on a luggage shelf behind him flew off the shelf and hitting him in the back of his head, breaking his neck. There is a very nice stone monument and roadside rest just north of the Tom Mix Wash. I noticed that there is a replica of the monument in front of the Pinal County Museum. It was the stone monument with the riderless horse on top. When I found out you were in Florence, I was hoping that you would have gone down old US-80/89, because I know you are the type to have taken a photo stop, but I see that you took the turn to Coolidge and the Interstate. But, I still like your videos. I really do! 😍

That was a very interesting small town video. I spent some time in Florence in 2018, on my way to Tucson to visit the Pima Air and Space Museum there. I visited the prison museum in Florence, but didn't realize there was a little county museum, too. It's an interesting little town. If you're taking 79 south to Tucson, you might want to stop at the Saint Anthony's Greek Orthodox Monastery. It's quite a development. They started many years ago, and it's become a major orchard, where they grow citrus and olives. From there I went on to the air museum and the Kit Peak National Observatory, both very interesting places. On the way back you may want to stop at the Dwarf Car Museum in Maricopa. That was probably the most interesting stop on my way down to Florence.

Agree completely on St. Anthony. It is a world within itself. Nurtured out of the desert in 1995. So green and lush, beautiful grounds, 5 different churches scattered on the grounds. Beautifully constructed brick paths, the flowers and plants. It's a wowzer for sure. Gift shop that also sells some traditional sweets.

Some of the private prisons house terrorists and cartel members. They pay the guards 16 an hour to guard them. The guards undergo a thorough investigation by the FBI. They talk to neighbors, colleagues, friends and check finances. If your debt is more than 6 grand they disqualified you from contact with The Federal Bureau of Prison's prisoners. but they also house state prisoners in the same prison while allowing the two contracts to intermingle. Federal inmates from us border patrol come in with heroin inside them. They either flush down the toilet or sell it at a great loss to the state contract prisoner. 100 dollars for a quarter ounce of heroin.
The private guards help facilitate the movement of drugs because nobody pays attention to who is allowed contact with federal prisoners. A state guard can enter the federal side of the prison at anytime. They often relieve each other during restroom or lunch breaks.

I had the pleasure of living in Florence in the early 1970's...not by choice. I got there on May 5, 1972 and counted the days until I was able to leave. After graduating from the local high school I enlisted in the U.S. Army and never looked back. I have been back a few times. The last time was 2014...going back this October for my 50th high school reunion and will most likely be my last. I also had the good fortune of living in Sierra Vista and Rio Rico when I was employed by the feds...I fell in love with Arizona but it wouldn't love me back...long story...and seems that those days I longed to get out of Florence I would spend a great deal of my life trying to get back to the great little town of Florence, Arizona....
