      I'm completely new to oil painting. When you say fat over lean does that mean there is a order to the oils when it comes to layering the paint??

      @@eliciamoreno it means that we put thinner layer at the base and keep building up the thickness of the paint ur using and based on which medium you are using, u would need to use more as u proceed (if the medium makes the pain thicker) or u would need it use less and you proceed (if the medium makes the pain thicker) [I'm also new to oil painting so feel free to rechdkc everything I said ]

    I'm new at this... trying to learn to paint with oils at the age of 76. I have often wondered what the difference is between these various mediums. Thank you for a very helpful video. I plan to archive it for future reference until I get more comfortable with the process. Thanks!

    I'm 77 years and 4 month old today and I've determined to start oil painting for half a years ago and still feel timid to begin! Painting is my childhood dream, but as an orphan at early age, I couldn't afford paper or pencil until my boyhood. My dear friend sponsored the materials for painting and we both didn't know exactly what we need and he bought me a few canvases, brushes, and oil-paint tubes, but not mediums are included. I even thought I must begin drawing yesterday and watched a few oil painting tutorials and found out I need more than I have to start painting- MEDIUMs!!! What a foooool I was who even think it was the same as water colour to use water as its medium.
    Miss, your explanation is very lucid and enlightening and I'm going to ask my friend to send some mediums right away!! Thank you so much, sensei.

      choć nie będzie on błyszczał.

    All this time I thought linseed oil helps the paint dry faster and bought it. Didn't think twice. Halfway, I realized that what I really need is turpentine. Sadly, I have to save up before I could buy one. But at the end of the video I had recognized their function and I don't regret buying linseed oil now since I could use them over lean. Thank you so much! This video greatly enlightened me!

Obraz trzeba odstawić wtedy by podsechł dlatego ja maluję kilka obrazów jednocześnie i wtedy maluję "do syta". Generalnie zasada jest taka by zacząć malować chudą warstwą a następna warstwa już tłusta. Chodzi o to by po latach obraz nie popękał.

    Great advice, just one thing I'd like to add, and that is Liquin is considered a fatty medium. Your order was correct if you were to use those exact mediums, but you also wanna use a ratio it as you paint; 1:1 beginning, 2:1 middle(progressively less lean as you continue each layer) then finish with a fatty medium or the same medium you start with minus any lean solvents(this method is for liquin in particular). Hope this helps anyone who was wondering about liquin.

    Thank you very much for this video! I'm new in oil painting.
    Please, tell me if that's right:
    1. I can do the entire painting with liquin, more liquin for 1st layers and less liquin later on.
    2. If I want a transparent glaze when the whole painting is almost done, I should use linseed oil only, so this glaze layer doesn't crack later on.
    Thank you !!

    • @MrOtterArtStudio
      @MrOtterArtStudio  3 роки тому +5

      1. No it is the opposite. Liquin thickens the paint so I would be careful not to use too much on the first layer. I like to use a paint thinner on the first layer. However, if the first layer is COMPLETELY dry you should be able to paint over it without a problem.
      2. Canson recommends to avoid using linseed oil: it will be too liquid, making the colors run on the support. However, I have used it as a glaze and it worked well. I hope that is helpful! Good luck

But actually Liquin is Trademarked and produced by Winsor & Newton so that is the only brand available. However there are other types of quick drying alkyd mediums available. I only use the Liquin and I'm not familiar with other brands of a similar product. Thank you for a great video!

      @@MrOtterArtStudiovTak inne oleje np. orzechowy, makowy schną zapewne szybciej ale ostatecznie po kilku latach zniszczą obraz. Nie rozumiem dlaczego ludzie szukają czegoś innego niż olej lniany. Jeżeli nie da się malować obrazu bo jest zbyt mokry, to można malować drugi potem trzeci, po czym wrócić do pierwszego, drugiego, trzeciego i w ten sposób obrazy zawsze będą suche. Polecam ten sposób malowania. Jeżeli ktoś nie liczy się z kosztami to może malować Liqinem. Jeżeli chodzi o przejrzyste warstwy, takie "akwarelowe" to robi się je przy użyciu oleju lnianego właśnie ( więcej oleju). Ale robi się to przy malarstwie laserunkowym, więc na koniec malowania a nie w trakcie.

    Thank you for this. I'm supposed to buy turpentine and liquin for my art class. So, turpentine is used to clean brushes and make the paint thinner right? Then what's the purpose of liquin just to keep the paint thicker? Why do we even need liquin then? Wouldn't turpentine be sufficient?

    • @MrOtterArtStudio
      @MrOtterArtStudio  4 роки тому +3

      Good question! Liquin slows your drying time, turpentine speeds it up. I use turpentine for my first layers, then liquin for the top ones. You could just use turpentine, but liquin is really nice at extending the drying time and extending the paint.

    • @therestlessknitter4290
      @therestlessknitter4290 3 роки тому +4

      Turpentine can break the bond between pigment and oil (since it’s a solvent) which may lead to paint flaking or rubbing off. Liquin protects that bond. Using turps to thin your paint for an under painting is fine but not for top layers.

      You can use non toxic oil paint, look for the word "hue" in the paint name, also you can use non toxic mediums like lavendar oil. If you use paints that do contain toxic ingredients, wear plastic gloves, open a window to make sure you have fresh air and you should be fine.

    What would you recommend for an initial underpainting for a portrait with no drawing, just by spotting the image and keeping it all in a very wet state while defining the shapes?

      I just learned some new info at a workshop, turpentine or gamsol is great for the under painting, but it will dry fast. If you want to keep it wet you could use linseed oil, not much, but it will increase the flow of the paint and not speed up drying time. One artist I know paints his canvas with linseed oil before beginning so it is wet, another paints a light wash of gamsol and some oil paint, then wipes away highlights

    Amazing video! I also have a little question:you have to use all of them in one piece?We start with liquin and end in turpentine or oil?

      Sometimes I just use turpentine, and sometimes just linseed oil. But I clean my brushes with turpentine or mineral spirits after

    If they made linseed oil scented cologne, I'd wear it.

    Excellent video, thanks. Do you have any instructions for applying a protective layer (gloss or other) to the painting when finished?

      You have to wait 6 months before applying varnish on oil paintings...it has to be completely dry before you can add the varnish

    I'm new to oil painting and I'm in the process of starting my first painting. I actually used the Linseed and Gamsol first. Is that an okay way to start or will that lead to problems down the road like cracking, etc?

      Adding linseed oil (fat) to gamsol (lean) is what allot of artists use when painting. It should be fine as long as you don't use more gamsol (adding more lean) in the layers on top of the one you are currently painting. Fat over lean is a good rule to help avoid cracking
