Talented painter, knowledgable teacher, generous soul.
Hi Andrew,
I am not the person who usually reaches out to someone providing content on social media platforms. Also, because I am an artist who thinks "if I practise enough I can do it myself" therefore I usually don't 'buy' from others. I stumbled over your heron painting about 2 years ago and I was so excited to see a MASTER at work and sharing his techniques, moreover - I was gobsmacked at how brilliant the painting was.
So here we are 2 years on and I have subscribed to your channel, I have watched most of your tutorials, some of your podcasts and 'bought' your EPIC MILFORD video. Whilst you don't know me, I feel like I am an old lost buddy so thank you for all your content, I really am amazed at how much I have learnt because as I have said... I am an artist. In fact, I am a mature aged artist (60 years young) with distinctions in painting from College and University, yet you opened my eyes about so many things!!!
Thank you so much.
Brother when you picked up all those bottles of mediums at the art store I was thinking: damn this would be expensive here in Hawaii🧐
Then I saw $477, wow. Thank you for spending you time and your money on my education. Much appreciated.
Andrew, you are heaven-sent! I know that traditional oil painting had dropped off the scene not too long ago, which makes it difficult to find good resources and education regarding oil painting. I think you are doing a wonderful job of keeping oil painting alive! I always enjoy your videos and I truly appreciate all the info you share. Thanks again!
This may be the single best series on oil painting on UA-cam. Genius. Thank you, Andrew. 10/10, sir.
Working as a billboard artist, we got our oils in quarts and gallons. We used a product called Smith Cream to paint on the surface to make blending easier. We also mixed Japan Dryer, Linseed Oil and paint thinner to mix with our paints to make them more pallettable.
💫PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT💫
-Today's PSA is here to remind you, to NOT eat any oil paints(or any paint for that matter), despite how *_palatable_* it may seem to appear!
Now that I'm getting into oil paint I truly appreciate these kinds of videos! Blessings from México ^-^
Blessings TO Mexico. Please apologize to those around you for the behavior of some Americans these last three years especially... I want you to know that the majority of us are not mean jerks. Please know that we are working on changing things as soon as we can. Love and Blessings to the people of your country.
Art joins us together, as do many other things. We must embrace that and hope for better times. Happy painting!
@@HeatherWelk I was FOR GOOD REASON apologizing for how America has been these last four years. Mexican people have had to endure alot of bad treatment from our leadership. THAT was a kind and necessary apology. If that bothers you, you have a problem, perhaps.
Heather Welk Right? 👏👏👏
Leslie Shevalier Cringe...stop...please...😂😂😂
@@lella2201 When Mexicans are done exporting most of their population AND CULTURE into the US, will it be their turn to apologize?
One of our artist fellows pointed out that you can replace the child proof caps on the W&N medium bottles with the screw caps from non corked wine bottles. The width and thread size seems to be exactly the same. I use the ones with a silvered inner seal of the same type W&N use on the inside of their bottles. Gently wash the inside with plain water and allow to dry for a few days incase a little water is hiding behind the edge of the seal, and they're ready to go.
The childproofs can be good to begin with, but after a while, little bits of medium can gum them up. My New Zealand wine caps seem to work great. Of course if you do have children of that age, it's best to avoid with the more toxic bottles.
I have been painting for quite a while, but I have never heard oil painting mediums explained so well. Thank you for sharing this excellent information.
I have been having trouble with spreading paint on the canvas so you really help me with that thank you I did not know that there was mediums so you really help me and thank you for telling me that don’t use to much❤
Out of all the videos ive watched, you explained the fat on lean rule the best. Thank you!
Teaching others your talents is a very high calling. Love and light
i add some accelerator to speed things up which works almost as an acrylic drying time. No cracking involved because just a few drops are necessary
As self taught, understanding mediums and enjoying your videos are brilliant keep doing what you do Andrew.👏👍
The most detailed and informative video I’ve ever seen on mediums. Yes it’s quite a bit overwhelming for a beginner but you explained it very well so it’s easy to understand. All the hardwork and efforts you put in to create this video is really appreciated because it helps number of people who want to learn from online teaching community. Thanks a lot 🙏
Andrew, your explainations makes u the best artist ever
Really appreciated your breakdown of different mediums.
I am appreciating your talent truely of all of my heart. Blessing for China. Your love of oil painting and your videos means a lot to me. Blessing from China.
What I love about the tutorials is you make everything seem so achievable and inspiring. I think it's because you deliver it with passion which comes through. The humour helps too though.... Love everyone you do bonny lad keep up the great work.
The Oleogel is made with a kind of quarts - a transparent "pigment" - so it's more like a transparent paint than a medium.
The quarts slides well, and holds its shape.
Thank you for humbly sharing your knowledge, you are an exceptional human being!
This is a superb video, Andrew, and you are a credit to the art world, a light in the world at large. Thank you! 😃
What I would love to see is a video of a simple example of a simple painting BUT focusing mostly on how to incorporate the mediums into the mix! Most videos on you tube pay lots of attention to the paint, colour, value and even brush strokes, but never demonstrate a practical convenient way to add the mediums. Kevin
I'd watched this video a long while back....amazing how much I'd forgotten. Such a great refresher! Thanks! 👍
I have been so confused about mediums forever. I can’t thank you enough for this video. So clear and concise. Excellent information!
Best oil medium tutorial I’ve ever seen. Thanks. Can you have a tutorial on studio lighting?
Hey George, nothing wrong with being old ;-) I just spent almost $500 on supplies to get back to oil painting! After 50-odd years of teaching, I believe that this tutorial on mediums is one of the best pieces of art instruction around. It has certainly given me the courage to open my new bottle of Liquin Orignal and get to work. Many thanks, Andrew
Been painting since Highschool, now I'm many decades older - but never too old to learn, and you have been such a blessing. You're kind instruction and guidance has breathed new life into even how I approach creating a painting - thank you Andrew. I would love the honour of meeting you one day. Question... is Liquin Original from only Winsor & Newton, or are there alternative sources
Thanks mate
I m new to oil painting but your lessons are going to take me to new horizons 😊
Been using these mixtures for years with great pleasure, keep it up brother
Thanks, though I’m an experienced painter 20+ years I really enjoy watching you videos. Your passion is addictive and there There is always something to pick up
One of the best videos on UA-cam
Andrew! This is a FANTASTIC video! It really helps to see the effects from using certain mediums in painting and seeing the concept of "fat over lean". Your videos are getting me really jazzed about wanting to start oil painting and I am hoping to do so in the near future. Thank you so much!
Oh my god this video is amazing!!! This is the best explanation I've seen online. And the 2 year test?? Wow
I still have a lot to learn about medium and oil painting...I love the materials and art supplies..Right now I am using some cold wax and just a bit of linseed oil and today I mixed up a linseed oil with a little terps to see how that works...It's a lot of trial and error and Edu. videos like yours that I am so thankful for....I do a lot of mixed media as well
Thank you for all these very clear informations. Thank you so much for the safety warning about linseed oil ans rags. I had never been told about that and am horrified of what can happen when you don’t know
Super helpful! Thank you. I'm currently painting with acrylics and ready to take the dive into oils. I completely understand the steps with the 3 dilusions. What I'm not quite understanding is what you do now, with the liquin. Do you just use a smaller ratio of liquin to paint as you progress, making the drying time slower and the paint thiker as you layer up? Or do you use a different medium along with the liquin? Does that make sense??
Thank you Andrew for such a clear explanation of the fat over lean etc - every time I study this I feel it sinks in a little deeper and it's great to have your tutorials to come back to for revision :). Brilliant - really appreciate that you take the time to share your skills with us :)
Thank you for presenting this video. Just to let you know......this is the best video made on UA-cam about using oil painting mediums!
I’ve watched quite a few and you have explained the differences in the mediums, so anybody can understand them, especially beginners. The fat over lean concept is a bit hard to grasp if you don’t understand the mediums.you explained them sooo well. Thanks again!😀😀😀❤️
Also I want to tell you, I always learn so much watching your painting videos.i love to watch you paint. You have the ability to teach as well as paint. There are a lot of magnificent artists, but just because you can paint beautifully, does not mean you can teach. You can do both!
Adore you! ( I can say that.......I’m a Granny ha😄😄😄🇺🇸)!
Your test panels provide legitimacy and authority to your expert and professional guidance. Thank you for a very informative tutorial on an obscure but essential topic for beginning oil paint practitioners!
Thank you for simplifying how to understand mediums and mixing our own... Especially I appreciated the safety warning about disposing of paper towels safely.
You're a great generius artist Andrew, finding your videos is like finding a well of treasure. It's loaded with valuable information that can grow us as artists. Thanks a million 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hello Andrew. Firstly thank you for sharing your knowledge. All of your videos are fantastic quality.
I am a trade painter and decorator 25 years I've been on the brush, and a little dabbling in Bob Ross style landscapes in the last 18 months, I'm loving it.
I've also been lucky enough to learn traditional marbling scumbling wood graining techniques ect, all these mentioned techniques require the artisan to make their own mediums for producing a desired effect. All in oils e.g. a basic scumbling medium I create would be 1 part gum turpentine 1 part stand oil plus tinters to tint to whatever color I need. An ingredient I came across many years ago is Terebine, it's an oils drying additive. And it gets oils drying fast. 3 drops in a half cup of medium will set that stuff drying fast. I have wondered whether this Terebine is a secret ingredient used in some of these artist painting mediums for assisting accelerated drying.
Just a heads up mate, your works are truly stunning.
Im very happy to finally have a video that will describe the Fine Detail liquin.
Cant wait to see that video! Thank You
Yet another wonderful tutorial, Andrew. Thank you.
Very good tutorial very helpful for all painters, congrats and more power Andrew Tischler!
This is great! it's like you explained the Artist's Manual. I have been wondering for years about which medium/s to use, and have been messing about with linseed oils, but not really understanding what I was doing. Big heart appreciation.
Now that's Andrew!!! Another surreal tutorial! Thanks man!!
Andrew, 1) LOVE the tiger hat!! Please share!!! 2) your teaching style is excellent!!! Love your speaking style, your inflections, your personality, I feel like you are speaking to me as if I'm in the same room, 3) I will watch this video chock full of important info 99 times, my mind is like a sponge around you, WOW!! 4) immense gratitude at the professionalism and time and effort in these high quality videos. THANK YOU Andrew, you are #1 in my book. God bless you and Rachel forever!
Well it took me a while to get this video, due to my total lack of brain. Thanks Rachel for sending me the link, it was positively perfect info. Now i just need to find a shop which is probably 2 hours drive from me, most things are here, and find the funds to buy the mediums.... I already found old canvas in my attic, which i will clean and build a frame for it, and then prime it, then I'm ready... i have all that time to prepare and get ready and learn... your education is so clear and concise, i appreciate it a lot thank you...
That color yellowing check chart is awesome
i have always done soft pastel paintings with some acrylics. i really want to get into oils and this video is sooo helpful!
Me too!
Brilliant! I've painted most of my life, mainly acrylic, but in the past I've dabbled in oil and I love the feel of it, even love the smell of it. I found lots of information over the years regarding oil painting but the ONE thing I 'wanted to know'!! Was what the ratio is regarding mixing turps & or oil into the paint for thinning, and whether I used one or the other, or could mix them together first (No-one mentioned that side of it). That was all I wanted to know - I'm stoked I finally found out!!! I just guessed before (can't remember now what ratio I used, or what I used) but my oil paintings still look good - beginners luck? :-)
I would love to see the chart today at 5 years old!! Ty for the great videos and courses.
amazing to see one of my favorite artists go to my favorite place ever. art supplies Southland is artist heaven and prices are relatively cheap too.
The do a great deal! Props to them!
Years ago we use stand oil with tarps and sometimes little varnish there wasn't too many pre-made mixtures
I thot that was Milford sound. I enjoyed my visit is 2000. i can hear the bugs buzzing. beautiful country. great video advice.
I've been using liquin original for some time and have had concerns about the "yellowing thing" so your video has put my mind at rest. Thanks.
Thanks so much! Great information… I’m just returning to painting after 20 years away (was concentrating on metalsmithing) and THIS TIME, I’m switching over to mostly using oils. I had definitely forgotten a bunch of technical stuff, so videos like yours are super helpful, thanks! New SUB👍
Learn a lot from your tutorial each time. Thanks for sharing your skills and experiences it really helps me to understand more painting being a beginner.
I love your art work and I love that you share it with other people so they can learn faster. It is a wonderful world we live in where people share there talents and knowledge. Wish I had a good friend to teach me more.
Very well explained thank you sir. I am a 31 year old artist just about to delve into the world of oils (I've been putting it off for years). Wish me luck 🙏
I use Windsor fine detail and the light gel from day one, on my 3 years journey so far, and for water features, it does a great job on translucent effects, it is really easy though in ocean pictures to get that yellowing effect on white crest wave highlights, so I use it with darker colors like the cerulean blues and Phaelo greens mixes with white. The sheen you get is really nice and it lasts. Almost like the gloss varnish on a final painting. I use multiple applications on the light gel, for the desired effects. Loved this video! Learned so much! Thanks!!
Andrew. Thank you once again for sharing great content. The topic of mediums can be confusing for hobbyists. Your overview was clear and concise.
Andrew, it's true what you say, in Porto a friend's studio burned down and he lost his works. Hug
Hi Andrew. For a large painting i make up a lean bottle of medium approx 200ml and then add about 5ml of stand oil for every separate painting session. So for a 50 hour painting I might add 5ml of stand oil ten times over ten 5hr sessions. I believe the AS mediums are based on the basic Ralph Mayer recipe
Thank you Andrew. Your videos never cease to be both informative and entertaining!
Great video as always Andrew thanks! Any plans for a tutorial on painting hair?
Andrew, have you ever used walnut and or safflower oil as a medium?
Thank you, and I’m very happy you share your knowledge.🙏🏻
You are my favorite artist! I love your paintings♥️
I never would've thought the stand oil to be so thick!! Amazing video!
I appreciate all the art knowledge you share as well as your inspirational stories and interviews. And I love your signature.
You are one of kind, Sir! I always have had questions about this topic and never had someone go through in such detail about mediums. THANK YOU YOUR AWESOME
I am so glad you covered managing the garbage pail containing the used paper towels. I am walking to my ‘studio’ to wet down those rags right now!!
I really appreciate this video. I have only recently gotten into oil painting and I could not understand why my paintings had flat and shiny areas. One of my teachers uses just turp and the other uses 50% turp and 50% linseed. Because of you and your simple explanations I can see another way to go may be better. For many reasons. I truly appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Thank you!
Using just turpentine will break the molecular bonds in the paint itself. You'll still need polymerisation to occur to form a rigid enough film to last the years. By using turps alone, it destroys the surface and makes a weaker film. Having some oil, like stand oil in there would be ideal.
You are not only an excellent painter but also a great teacher!! Even better than a lot of my school teachers. You should be teaching at an art school.
Fantastic tutorial Andrew. I've always been a little confused about these key principles.
I’m thinking about working with oil paint. But with oils there are so many chemicals with toxins. And oils seem to take so long to dry. I’m not as young as I was, so a year to dry one painting before varnishing and finishing is just too long. I know oils are traditionally more favourable. But I’ve been learning to use Acrylic. Artiza is none toxic Acrylic and it’s nice to use. Quick to dry although you can control drying time a bit. Main problem is Acrylic dries about two shades darker. Humm, I don’t like too many toxic chemicals.
I want to thank you for the informational videos. It has enlightened me alot more to the art world. I am passionate about painting and would like to paint correctly. Once again your awesome and love all your work. Beautiful.
at 22:19. If you pour the turps (or anything in that kind of container) from the side rather than straight on, it will flow more smoothly.
Langridge also make an oleogel, which I have used in the bottom layer of my painting. Then I’m using Langridge impasto medium on top.
I would make sure you use no more than 1 part medium to 3 parts paint. You'll get disadhesion otherwise! Probably better to do your underpainting with a lean medium.
Thank you again Andrew for your timeless advise and help! :)
Wow - what an awesome video, Andrew. You’ve cut through the arm waving, piecemeal information that makes this topic so hard to get your head around. Instead, this is an incredibly valuable dive from the broad high level principles right down into the “this is exactly how you get exactly what you need and want”. A thousand uncertainties resolved into an action plan. And all from Godzone. A true gift - THANKYOU - Nigel.
One of the best videos , really helpful. I tried the Art shops in Nelson and Balclutha, but didn't get any of the items I needed.
Thanks for telling us about this Art Store.
Great video Andrew - wonderful way of explaining all that! AND - I love your hat!
Greetings from England, thanks for this fantastic information !
Man I thought I was bad about overspending in an art store! You sure have me beat...giggles. Awesome information, much appreciated!
Super talented artist. So easy to follow instructions....
New subscriber. I viewed the mixing paint video and was sold. This video was very informative. I always struggled to understand mediums. You took care of that. Looking forward to diving into your painting tutorials. Awesome presentation!
OMG....I just can't thank you enough for your practically awesome tips .
Commented earlier not even halfway through youre video, and here i am, again on 3/4 of the video, praising how well you explained this medium thingy!!! I dont think i nees to watch more videos about medium coz i well understood it with this. Now all i have to think about is how to have money to buy materials. I am beginner in painting and i stopped drawing long ago. Now inspired to go back to my first love --- art.😊
Thank you will try this to morrow takes a while to figure it out it will make a big difference to me greeting from Ireland
You really doing a great job up here. Really appreciate your effort and enthusiasm
You are a hero, thank you for all you do.
Another wonderful Video for the beginners , and for many others.
Well, here's another one I missed! For some reason I'm not getting notifications on all of your posts like I used to, so guess I'll just have to check now and then so I don't miss any. Love your tips. This one is absolutely what I need. I am overwhelmed by this subject! Thanks. And yes, I also have major issues going into art stores (and bookstores as well)... clothes? Meuhh... thrift stores and Wally world will do fine. LOL - just in the studio, kitchen and garden with dogs for company anyway. I did purchase your portrait video but have yet to download it until I can get a flash drive to put it on (computer is old and soon to loose support so don't want to loose it). Thanks Andrew.
well, i watched this video again. it still is very good and i will refer to it when i need to.Thanks Andrew.
Artist turpentine and linseed oil, that’s what I used in the 1970’s at art college with oil paint. I would be interested in liquin to see how that works. You’re a brilliant painter, especially your looser painting!
Perfect. Thank you so much Andrew. I have been looking for a good book on glazing, so will order that book. Now, I found an approx little more than 1/2 bottle of Liquin stored away for 41 years, found at the back of a cabinet. The consistency is the same, but the colour has changed. Darker. And no funky smell. To use or not to use is the question. So I will use it on a small painting and see what happens.
Wow! 40 years?? Incredible. Make a painting with it, and make a little test like shown here. Would love to hear the results!
@@AndrewTischlerArt Yea, ya never know what you are going to find when downsizing. I've been starring at the Liquin, 3 tubes of paint and poppyseed oil with a suspicious eye as if they are food and not certain if they have gone off. I used nutcrackers to get the lids off the paint tubes and broke them all. If anyone out there knows what/how to use to save the oils, one of which is Rose Madder and has different ingredients than the paint of today, could you please let me know:) Thanks.
@@rosered103 You can buy empty tubes and decant them.
@@Jules_Pew tks for the heads up:)
Oh man! I recently had a trash fire 🔥. A visitor threw a spent match in the trash can. It was out! Luckily I was fast thru a wet towel over it and took it outside. When I removed the rag it was still burning! We put it out quickly after that
Wonderful information. I’ve never learned these things in art classes and some through trial and error. Thank you so much
