Did Doc Thorne stay in the area just wondering cause My last name is Thorne and i got family in Payson AZ. Not far from the Superstition mountains just North of it. They claimed to be Miners at one time the uncles did.

Dr Thorne moved to New Mexico after failure to find the mine again. He shared the mine information with others which launch new searches.
I have also heard Clay say that the Dutchman came across the famed mine when it was being worked by Mexicans who he later murdered, while the Dutchman was walking home from Globe. I would like some clarification if anybody can shed light.
I believe this version is Milton Rose's version of events. The other version you mentioned was from a newspaper article published in 1895 by PC Bicknell. He supposedly was told his version by Julia Thomas who took care of the Dutchman after he took ill from the flood.
These guys (especially Hank, may he rest in peace) are of the opinion that Bicknell's version is fiction made up to sell newspapers. Hope this helps.

I think it was located between the Salt river and Four Peaks. Thinking back to the late 70's early 80's there was a forest fire on the south and east side of the Four Peaks and there was a reporter covering the fire from a helicopter and he spotted an old mine that nobody knew was there, need to find that footage.
Great stuff.. I remember reading about Doc Thorn many yearz ago about his helping the Apache at camp McDowell..very interesting to hear about his expedition to the Mountain. A very welcome treat to see an listn to another mystery of the Superstitions. You guyz are Tops Thank you.
