Not a ProShot, but one of the best audience cams out there for sure.

Mayer's treatment of the solo at the beginning of the outro (beginning around 3:20) for this song has always driven me nuts! Garcia along WITH the band ALWAYS started the outro somewhat slow-ish, attempting to build to a crescendo whereas Mayer nearly ALWAYS goes into it full throttle, with or without the band, with 110% energy and it just doesn't work - it renders the song too one-dimensional. And where are the other parts of the jam that 'made' the song into the powerhouse that it should be? John, I'm assuming you've listened to HCS, is there a chance you could listen to the HCS from 12/19/73 and get the band on board to relearn that arrangement? I know the missing parts from that arrangement aren't too difficult for you to pull off.
To be fair, around 7:50 it appears Mayer is trying to slow it down to one of the other 'parts' but the drummers are oblivious to what he's trying to do. Then the song falls back into the one-dimensional jam that all too quickly gets old. Bill and Mickey, you used to play this song so beautifully, is there a chance you and the band can do that again? What happened? Yeah, you Dead Heads know exactly what I'm talking about.
Even Garcia's guitar tone or set-up is too far off by Mayer's rig set-up. John K was much, much closer in that regard. Surely Mayer could get that right if he wanted to, or at least we'd think he should/could be able to do that.
Seriously John, for the love of God, please start listening to more Dead. First and foremost, get the substance or essence of the song. Do this by listening, no playing. Once said essence of the song is understood, then learn it first note-for-note as Garcia played it. Now you're ready to put your mark on it to make it your own with the understanding that if you wander too far you'll lose the essence. Respect the Dead and their music catalogue enough, as you've said on record that you do, to stay true to the essence or you'll fail what you've set out to do in the first place. Surely your EGO which you've said is better wouldn't be happy about that. Another matter entirely...

The man had to learn 130 plus songs in three months to prep up for this tour. This is only their FOURTH show together. Give him a fuckin' break already. It's a MAGNIFICENT version, even if different from how it would have been performed in the past. It's one thing to have high expectations, but JEEZ already...
