  • Alexander Abian was a mathematics professor at Iowa State University who had some radical ideas on climate change. One of them being that blowing up the moon would fix all of our meteorological problems. He absolutely meant it, too.

      Well if that's all we're after, we actually don't need to blow up the moon, we just need to alter its orbit so that it never appears full when viewed from the earth, which would be possible if we have it revolve in a north-south direction instead of an east-west one.

    This man is honestly fascinating. A great teacher, an accomplished mathematician, a very smart man by every measure... and yet, he just fucking hated the way the solar system looks, the way one might hate how the furniture in their house is arranged. Except that instead of throwing out that ratty old couch and pushing that big fuck-off wardrobe somewhere else, my man wanted to delete the moon and shuffle the planets around. You gotta admire this guy's dedication to telling planetary science to go fuck itself, to telling physics itself that it built the solar system all wrong.

    For those who are wondering: blowing up the moon would take the equivalent of a magnitude 16 earthquake. Tsar Bomba, the most powerful nuke ever created had the equivalent power of a magnitude 8 earthquake. Go figure.
    (btw, if you're not familiar with the Richter scale: it's logarithmic meaning that 16 is not just twice as strong as 8 but much, much, much stronger. Look at it this way: a magnitude 8 earthquake is devastating, but a magnitude 4 is barely noticeable, and magnitude 2 can only be measured using specialized equipment)

    Fun fact; if the moon was blown to bits, it would reform within a week. I wouldn't step foot on it, but more or less 99% of the mass would accumulate back into a sphere. I believe it's called Molecular attraction.

    • @generalrubbish9513
      @generalrubbish9513 2 роки тому +41

      Probably not a week, maybe more like a hundred years or so (which is still barely any time at all on a cosmic scale of course). Otherwise, that's just how plain old gravity works, as far as I'm aware. The reason why we even have a moon in the first place is currently thought to be due to another protoplanet slamming into the young Earth during its formative years and throwing up a lot of material from both planets into the newly merged planet's orbit. The stuff that didn't fall back to Earth or fly off into interplanetary space eventually lumped together under its own gravity and formed the Moon. Therefore, if we did somehow manage to blow the moon to pieces, I believe pretty much the same thing would happen again - some of the Moon's mass would fall down to Earth or fly off into deep space, but the rest would stay in orbit and eventually form the Moon again, though it would naturally be a bit smaller due to the amount of mass it lost.

      Ok but do you realize how many things are on the ground in Jojo? Each one of those instances is relevant to the plot. Every single moment in time that a character is on the ground means that gravity is having an effect on the story. It would completely fuck up the plot if at any point any of the main characters were to take a step forward and then fly into space, therefore every instant of time is considered a use of gravity in JJBA.

    Doesn't the moon also contribute to all the normal tides and whatnot? Like...wouldnt getting rid of the moon murder ocean life? Wouldn't the ocean come to a standstill?
    I believe there's a theory (maybe not a theory anymore I dunno) that the moon is the reason life formed on earth? It kept the oceans stirring and mixing and allowed life to finally grow and thrive?
    Or am I just remembering something wrong?

      Well yes and no. Waves are mostly caused by wind. Wind is caused by presaure differentials. Pressure differentials (other wise known as "the weather") is caused by the sun heating the earths crust and ocean currents. Ocean currents are caused by differing levels of salinity. Differing levels of salinity are caused by rainwater through rivers and melting ice. Melting ice is seasonal caused by the earths tilt. The tilt is caused by gravity from the moon and other celestial bodies. So the moon causes waves I guess. You right I dunno im not a waveologist

      completly destroying the moon and removing it's remaints (because gravity is still a thing and splitting a planetoid simple in pieces will only cause it to reform again, also the effect the moon has on the earth wouldn't change) would end all life on earth, as this would stop the tilting effect of the moon which creates the strong magnetic field of the earth resulting in the sun bathing us in radiation.

    Fun fact: There are 2 objects in the same orbit that earth travels around the sun. 1 is the earth and the other is a moon sized rock that may have been part of earths second moon that well here is the most screwed up and horrific fact I actually know. Earth had 2 moons somewhere around 13,000 to 14,000 years ago. Something happened I do not know what and that moon which was actually 4 times the size of the moon kind of had a bit of an oopsie and went KABOOOOM!!!!!! parts of it created the fucking asteroid belt that earth has and yet no one realizes or remembers after learning about it in elementary school, middle school, high school, collage or and other place you learn about it, one piece is in the orbit around the sun that earth is in and the really funny fact is we can not see it from earth and in fact we only found that rock in the early 1980s when we launched a satellite to study Uranus and it was slingshotting around Mars and the camera had a slight accident and tilted slightly and took a few pictures of a weird direction and caught 2 pictures of this object and then around 1991 to 1994 when sending more satellites to study moons of Jupiter, Neptune, and Saturn more tilts of the camera kept happening from the violent jerking of the gravity sling shot method throwing those satellites into deeper space and took more accidental pictures of this object and we have figured out its got a really fucked to hell rotation that looks like a M. C. Escher painting. Even though we know this object exists in our same orbit and would be literally the stupidest and easiest thing to ever study we however ignored it and keep ignoring it. There is a literal object in our same orbit around the sun and the only fucking data that has been gained from it was from accidents that could not be fixed. The tilting of the camera was fixed and data about that object has been vastly ignored and refused by NASA and all government space agencies to study. WHY IN THE HELL DOES THE MAINSTRAIN SCIENTISTS REFUSE TO STUDY SOMETHING SO SIMPLE TO STUDY AND RELITIVELY CHEAP AND WOULD GRANT DAM NEAR INFINITE POSSIBLITIES OF STUDY. ITS A FUCKING MOON SIZED OBJECT IN EARTHS ORBIT AND WE DONT EVEN NEED TO DEAL WITH ANY ANGLES OR ANYTHING AT ALL THAT ARE NOT ALREADY KNOWN FOR ITS IN THE SAME ORBIT AS EARTH JUST THROW THE OBJECT BACKWARDS AND LET THE SATELLITE MEET THE OBJECT STRAIGHT ON IN THE SAME LAP THAT EARTH IS GOING!

      Your lack of knowledge about rocket science is showing. First off, launching a rocket backwards from the earth would require them to recalculate everything: mass of the rocket, fuel consumption, launch angle, and all sorts of other things, since the rocket is launching into (the equivalent of) a strong headwind, as opposed to the much easier "tailwind". It would be more expensive to launch a rocket in such a way, and certainly more time-consuming a mission than you seem to understand.

    If we do that, the moon will be launched towards mars and have it set in its orbit.
    That way, everything you explained about the earth getting better will happen with no consequences and we can also have a base on the moon and have an easier way to getting to mars by using a small - medium size force and have a safer landing.
    it's a win win situation.
