    Phenomenal work. Yew is a pretty wood and even prettier when someone who knows what they are doing is working with it.

    Finished item absolutely gorgeous. I'm guessing here that as this was a one off you just had an idea of what you were going to do but make the actual decisions as you turned it. I'm sure that I see more hesitation between some of the cuts as you decided where to go. Expected as you normally have to make 50+ of every item. I'm sure even you were impressed on how grand the final item was. Always a please to watch a true master and professional wield his tools, especially the skew.
    Surprised no one asked but what was the wax?
    Excellent work as always Steve, love it.

      Hi Paul, you are spot on with your comment, I had an idea of what to do in my head and as you said make the decisions as I go along, trying to get the right flow means I am a little hesitant compared to normal.
      The wax was Black Bison paste wax.

    Thats a very nice piece, the workmanship and the choice of wood used. If i ever get a wig your the man to make me a stand. ha. All kidding aside, thoroughly enjoyed the experience! The wax is this
    something you remember that you used? Never have I tried a wax. Bees wax or floor wax or ? I have seen wax on videos before but never heard what is good. Thank You!

      Hi Don sorry missed this. The wax on this video is liberon black bison wax, there are some good paste waxes try Hampshire Sheen or Briwax

      @@woodturner21 Thanks Steve. I've heard of Hampshire Sheen, I think it is available here in the states too. Worth a shot. Still enjoying the skew, it's as fun to use as it is watching on your show. Thanks for the heads up.

    Steve - I find your work to be amazing. Two thoughts. 1. Could you occasionally position the camera over the top of the lathe? It can be hard to see the work you are doing when you are between the rest and the larger items. 2. Have you given any thought to adding a few words about your choices? For example sometimes you reduce the diameter with a skew and other times you use a gouge. Or when you are pondering aesthetic choices what options you are weighing? Both of these would help those of us noobs out. Thanks for posting videos. I always learn a bunch from watching.

    • @woodturner21
      @woodturner21  7 років тому

      Thanks Brian, I only use my iPhone to film but I will try to video from above sometime. I don't use a skew to reduce rough out on the faceplate it's a negative rake scraper. I use a skew between centers to rough out on the smaller diameters and a gouge on the larger sizes.

    Steve, beautiful as always. I've heard that yew is toxic: do you have trouble with it or are you wearing a respirator?

    • @stevejones1823
      @stevejones1823 7 років тому

      Hi Pete, I wear a dust mask as well as the normal dust extraction for Yew. It is toxic but you would need to swallow a huge amount of dust to cause any more damage than any other dust. All wood dust is a hazard so take sensible precautions as you would for any wood.

      close grained, but Yew is my favourite when finished for it's stunning
      grain.

    Thank you for sharing that video, I love it when I see woodturning in real speed and specially the part with the spindle. May I ask about the grade of the skew chishel ven grinding it? Again thank you for yout demonstration of your work. Júlíus

    • @woodturner21
      @woodturner21  7 років тому

      Thanks Julius, The skew is HSS. Ashley Iles standard 1" skew and I grind it freehand with a slightly longer bevel and slightly reduced angle.

  • @jeffdeluca1153

    I have an extra scraper I was going to repurpose into a skew. What's your thoughts on the Alan Lacer curved edge design? Or do you prefer the straight normal grind as you obviously use? Thx again

    • @woodturner21
      @woodturner21  6 років тому +1

      I prefer the straight edge design. I don’t like the Alan Lacer style but many do. It is all personal preference and you don’t know until you try it. I find it less versatile.

    • @jeffdeluca1153

      woodturner21 I just reground the scraper, went with the straight edge as you use, (looks like it works great for you so going with it) anxious to try it out. Btw... My convex skew I said I was getting runbacks with... I noticed there's a burr on one side of the edge. Not sure if that could cause some of the problem?? I think I'll come apprentice with you!

    • @woodturner21
      @woodturner21  6 років тому +1

      Yes a burr on your Skew is very bad and will cause you terrible problems

    • @jeffdeluca1153
      @jeffdeluca1153 6 років тому

      woodturner21 Hello again! Hope you don't mind all my questions but you obviously know what you're doing and isn't UA-cam just great! Hey my newly ground skew, 1" I believe. I tried to stay focused on turning the edge to vertical as I finished the bead on the top of the skew and so far, no run backs! For a newbie I'm happy! Even ran an ogee with a little cove on that! I can see there's no time to take your eye off your work though. Complete focus is a must. I'm going to get good at this! Thank you for your help!
      Also made sure to hone the edge and even strip it to remove all burrs

    careful you don't breathe in that dust! POISON!

    • @woodturner21
      @woodturner21  6 років тому

      I know that, I think you’ll also find all dust is bad for you, this is only a tiny fraction worse. The fact it’s poisonous is not an issue as for it to actually poison you a huge amount would need to be taken in. It’s important you take precautions and mange the dust on all woods.
