Great video and turning! Obviously you're a VERY accomplished 'Skew' turner. I enjoyed watching you work very much and your end product. Thanks for sharing and safe turning to you always!
OMG Your skill is amazing. i have subbed you and watch't all your vids in two days outstanding. i have just bought my 1st lathe @ 57yrs old so i am never gonna get that good but it is something to aim for. thank you. Chris.
Fantastic job!! I'm saving this for the skew chisel lesson/tips/tricks - you have quite the touch. Thanks for posting this. I have a set of old Witherby skew chisels of varying sizes that I got off Ebay and I am anxious to start using them. Thanks again. Scott
I enjoyed watching you work. You really seem to have a clear vision as you shape the pieces. I also like how you repeat design elements from the pedestal onto the finial, just at a smaller scale. Really ties it together well.
Very nice! I will try this someday. I am saving this for after a lot of practice with the skew. It is nice to see real talent you have. Thanks for the video.
+peter smith Thanks Peter, your comments are appreciated. I shall film more videos when I do work I think will interest pepople and not be to similar to others
Beads and coves, beads and coves, beads and coves. Add a couple of decades of experience, and what have you got? Economy of movement and confident self assurance. Oh! And a lot of shavings!
woodturner21. You're welcome! I also think you need an affinity with your material. I used to belong to the local club, we would get many new members who were retired metal machinists, after all, a lathe is a lathe, isn't it. Almost without exception they all left. One guy, I remember, produced the most wonderful machine to turn spheres, both solid and hollow. He enters some in the monthly competition. He got very upset when I told him they were very nice but they were not turning. I would rather see a thick, flat bottomed bowl that had been loved, than a mechanical perfect ball. These skills have to be cherished and kept alive, especially with almost everything been turned out by copy lathes and CNC. I know I went on a bit, but to me, we are loosing all our old craftsmen.
Hello Please could you tell me whether the clock housing and base are turned cross or straight grained. I have tried to find out by looking at this very good video, but I can't work it out. Thank you
Loving your videos. Pure art in motion and has spurred me to try again with the skew! One question I have is about the chisel I've seen you use on this and other vids when you are turning side Grain (like the ear ring stands), I thought you were using a skew to get the size and shape but then saw the end and question myself. Is it a skew or a scraper? It looks like it is skewed, but has a scraper type edge? Huge thanks.
woodturner21 thanks, makes sense. (Also been following you on IG - if you see any likes or comments from 'tonys_garage_workshop' on there that's me too).
noticed you use a cone centre on your tailstock. everytime I use one it seems to burn itself into the wood and become loose. how do you avoid that? thanks Tom.
yep cheers. just got myself a live center. much better now. thanks for the reply. you make it look so effortless. mid me asking what lathe you use? mines nowhere near as smooth as yours.
Steve: Nice. Brilliant. What tool are you using there at various places, such as when you round the disks in the beginning? It looks like a wide bedan tool or a scraper, but the bevel is short for a bedan.
It's a negative Rake scraper. 1" wide. I also grind the edges slightly this gives a small cutting area at the tip of the tool making it more versatile.
The more you can take off is the difference between amateur and detail oriented veteran. Your stuff doesn't look like dollar store crap, but like Tiffany! I've turned for around 40 years and yet have met only a few handful of turners that I consider true turners. Good work bro!!!

You should try buying your first lathe at 70. Then finding his channel and being amazed. That was 4 years ago and I am still watching.

Hello
Please could you tell me whether the clock housing and base are turned cross or straight grained. I have tried to find out by looking at this very good video, but I can't work it out. Thank you
Sorry I missed this comment it’s cross grained.
That is awesome thanks for sharing
Thank you, sorry missed this earlier

On facework I use a negative rake scraper not a skew. The edge is straight I think camera angles might be deceptive

You are amazing!

When drilling the holes have you it marked or are you doing it by eye thanks
I have them marked
