She is so lovely and sweet :) a great example that doing something you love makes you love the work you do, even if you do work a crazy amount of hours! Truly inspirational
+lisa varadinek Bravo for you! I can’t imagine the discipline and hard work involved in bodybuilding. This ballet thing, it’s a different world, isn’t it?
She inspires me so much, since I started ballet when I was 9 ( I'm 11 now ) and I'm gonna work really hard on ballet, so that maybe I could be a professional ballerina when I'm older
According to this article: www.standard.co.uk/es-magazine-fashion/tutu-divine-7302612.html , she was 24 in 2008 (the year this article was published), making her somewhere around 30 now? I couldn't find her age listed around the Internet!
Its been 10 whole years and Yuhui is STILL first soloist? She has everything and she deserves the role of the principal dancer yet she still doesn't have the pleasure of being one... shame she is such a great ballerina..
i can't believe this. i have only been watching her since 5 years ago, but 11 years and she's still not principal. this isn't just about skill already then. 😠
I read that professional ballet dancers make somewhere around 30-35k a year. Why do they get paid so little? They train their whole lives, push their bodies to the brink of limitation, and have to be perfect and elegant while performing in front of an audience. You would think they would at least make 100k. I know people will say they are doing what they love but, damn, that's no money at all. You might as well work an office job and make like 50k or something. I would be pissed if I was a ballerina and people like Kim K makes millions while doing absolutely nothing!
It is definitely a shame that dancers get paid so little, but if you are part of a company, you at least get your shoes covered and have support for any potential injuries. The ballet companies rely a lot on funding since ticket sales doesn't cover enough. This is the biggest reason why the dancers don't get paid much. Some of the big name Prima Ballerinas actually do get paid quite a bit though, but this is mostly because they guest at other companies, tour, or are hired for any other outside job. Black Swan portrayed the ballet world in both a true and a not-so-true way (as movies do) I'm just happy that the movie introduced this art-form that I have loved since I was four, to people like yourself. It truly helps keeping ballet alive, which in the long run helps paying dancers more money :)
I always assumed the same things you did, but I guess it's because people I know who learned ballet came from a rich family who supported that kind of profession from beginning...
+Kit I hate what I do now and don't get paid very well. So I know the feeling, but I'm only 24 and I'm working this job to pay off my college loans. Once that is paid off, I'll work one or 2 more years there to save money and move out of my mom's house to chase my dreams. I only have myself to worry about. I'm single with no kids and not planning on having any until my mid to late 40's. So this job I'm working is a means to an end.
This video was released about the time she got promoted to First Soloist and this is probably by far one of the most watched video on their channel and it's sad to say that nothing much has changed. She gave so much for the company (15 years in the company!) and is very well loved performer who never fails to deliever but there's no reason why she hasn't been promoted to Principal yet. Kevin O'Hare has promoted really fantastic people to Principal but it makes me wonder why he has passed her year after year.

I have just seen her as Princess Florine from The Sleeping Beauty on the 2nd of December. She was technically superb and was the best female performer that evening,
it's such a shame to see how hard ballerinas work, how fatiguing it is on the body, working longer hours and more days than most occupations, physical at that, and still come on stage and look so graceful. but still get paid so little. I know they do it because it's what they love but it's so unfortunate that they only make what they do.
It does take a lot. There are days i think every dancer thought about stopping. But something about it keeps us. They can have hours of ballet at a young age and it keeps growing. But for some reason we keep going. Idk man maybe we're weird.
This girl is so lovely. I like her a lot. I've seen her a few times (not live, sadly) and I think her dancing is honest, relaxed/easy, graceful and most of all, super sweet.
Now, I'm not professional or anything, but of course she ate during the day. If you have such a hard schedule, you have to eat or you'll pass out...And after what we see, she was perfectly fine, just a bit tired. :)
What a really lovely person - so graceful as well! I have respect for dancers - they practise so much - they have a hard schedule! But it does pay off in the end, I'm sure!
This really makes me appreciate what the ladies and gentlemen of ballet companies go through day in, day out to give us lucky audience members our two (or more) hours of perfection on the stage. Thank you so much for such dedication, grace and sheer hard work, and yet making it appear so magical and effortless. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Yuhui, You have all the ingredients to be one of the best ballerinas ever! A natural beauty and elegance, combined with great technique. I wish you many years of wonderful performances.
Looked it up, and it looks like it can range from around $20,000-$60,000, depending on how good of a dancer the person is. So it's honestly not that much for the amount of hours these people spend working.
I had watched this video for many times. Watching this video again, after a while, reminds me how much I love Yuhui's dance and how it made me happy to watch her dancing...... Yuhui made a moment in my life. I hope she knows that....
Just putting this out there for whoever is doubting themselves about starting too late. It's never too late! I'm fourteen and just started ballet a few months ago. I didn't think I could be a ballerina because I wasn't flexible enough. But that's nonsense! I can now do the splits, ect. All it takes is time and practice, if you want to become professional, don't doubt yourself. Push yourself, push yourself to pursue your dream, as corny as it sounds it's true. Whether you go onto pointe or not, you will still be an amazing dancer. Pointe isn't for everyone, so don't get bummed if your instructor tells you you aren't ready! Pointe takes a lot of ankle strength, patience and practice. You have to keep at it, and whenever your instructor thinks you're ready, you'll be en pointe in no time. c:
glader_charley I'm 14 too and my while life I dreamed of ballet. I keep thinking I'm too old and in Northern Ireland there isn't much classes for teenagers but you inspired me and I'm going to go for it! Thank you
i know i´m a year late to this coversation but i´m 24 and after i stopped dancing ballett with 12 i nom am in class again and it was definately the best decision. sometimes it´s hard to think about i could have become a professional if i just hadn´t stopped (it hurts^^) but this wont get me away from the beauty of ballett. For real, if you are 60 you could still start.
I'm 31, beginner male dancer, and just started a couple of months ago. One of the best decision I've ever made. Just go for it if you think about doing it. I've never been so conscious about body movements before and it feels so awesome idk it's hard to explain.

Just remembered how much I used to love Yuhui Choe, but I haven't checked what she's up to for many years now. I remember seeing her replace Osipova in Sleeping Beauty and thinking that she would be their next big star for sure. But that was 2014, and she's still only a First Soloist? That seems very odd to me. She's been one of their most talented dancers for 20 years! Just checked the ROH programme and she's still cast as the Sugar Plum Fairy - the very role she's rehearsing for in this video. That is generally considered a Principal role, and she's apparently been dancing it for 14 years now, without getting the promotion. I don't really feel like seeing the Nutcracker yet again, but think I might get a ticket just for her. December 7th or January 3rd, if you're interested...
She is absolutely beautiful! She has a subtlety to her movements that you don't find in very many dancers, and her technique is so delicate and clean. Gorgeous!
i play this video ,along with the rest of royal opera house's playlist, when i study because they are all not only calming... but their incredible attitude and work ethic just inspires me to study harder lol... and yuhui's voice is so suitable for asmr too :)
Some Korean accent can sound a bit British because it makes the English "choppy". I'm Korean American and lived half my life in Korea so when I travel to Europe some people ask if I'm British (very rare tho) because I don't sound very "American". Or I guess it's possible that due to her learning of English in Europe she actually picked up the British accent, because she seems fluent no doubt haha
I know how you feel. I started pointe work 2 years ago and I'm still absolutely rubbish at it. I've been dancing 14 years XD but I'm gonna keep at it for as long as possible even though it's not going to be a career choice for me :)
That's the beauty of it, it's meant to look easy. I broke 3 toe nails and twisted my ankle recently trying to do pointe work. It's fun but takes practice. You will love it though. I'm 16 and have been dancing 14 years :)
This girl is so pretty. I just love the part when she is rehearsing for the Nutcraker, just rehearsing takes me to another world. Beautiful to look at. Big fan already
LPAP 135: I feel that ballet is the most technical of the dances in this playlist. Being a ballet dancer requires so much discipline and early training. She is so graceful and beautiful on pointe. It's crazy to imagine that she is very literally dancing on the tips of her toes.
+Cici Xie The ballroom is very technical as well, but the technique is different. Ballet is the most unnatural dance form, so there is a lot of training your body to do things that you would never do in daily life...lol
Holy crap, she’s such a phenomenal dancer... I wish they’d shown more of her dancing, so I’m off to find more of her performances... thanks for posting (and hiring, of course 😊) this unbelievably talented dancer🙏🏻❤️!
I enjoyed watching this video so much, Yuhui Choe is truly a precious, she is so beautiful and amusing to watch. I hope that she could be promoted to the Principle soon as she's so talented and hard working.
I hope you all think about returning to ballet! I’ve just begun conservatory musical theater training and I do ballet twice a week and I’ve already seen so much improvement I never thought was possible. If you want to dance, do it!
Ms. Choe please make another video!! I love hearing your sweet voice and you are such an inspiration to watch. Much love from a beginner ballerina 🩰🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
Just wondering why she hasn't been promoted to Principal yet. She's much better technically and musically than the latest promotion in the Royal Ballet.
I started ballet when I was eight doing RAD primary grade with all the 6 year olds. Next week i'm taking my intermediate foundation exam as one of the younger dancers in my grade. Never give up
Love her accent! She's a beautiful dancer as well, high arches and great turnout. She makes it look like a breeze, and it keeps me motivated to stick with dancing. "Eat well, Sleep well, Be healthy." ~Yuhui Choi :)
How many times am I watching this! I also enjoy all the rehearsal videos with Yuhui so much❣️ I hope Royal Opera House will continue releasing videos with Yuhui✨
I should comment on something substantial like her schedule or practice of ballet, but one thing i loved in this video is how adorable was the little hint of british accent in her voice. Impressive how she embraced her second or third language !
+Karen Katz Well, naturally it would follow that they are [ballet dancers] the most developed of human beings, this is a requirement it would seem to me, so it is safe to say her memory is strong, this is how she is able to remember all the choreography and keep it straight in her mind, and the rest would be muscle memory, intuition and technique. She has been with the company for years and most likely she has been dancing from age 10. The most impressive thing I would say is ballet.
I read about it a little. It's like when u rehearse enough then upon hearing the music, the body remembers the moves kind of automatically. But they run into difficilties when the orchestra plays the tune differently. Even principals have the same problem. Or think of a song u know well. The music starts and u blast it out automatically. Of course, ballet is mln times harder😊
I'm just binge watching videos about ballet

Awww she is soo adorable. Love her voice. What is her accent I cant work it out.
Yuhui Choe is Korean. She was born in Japan and trained in Paris. You can find out more about her here www.roh.org.uk/people/yuhui-choe
She’s got that korean accent but i guess she’s just picked up the British ish accent so
It sounds like English or maybe Australian?
Some Korean accent can sound a bit British because it makes the English "choppy". I'm Korean American and lived half my life in Korea so when I travel to Europe some people ask if I'm British (very rare tho) because I don't sound very "American". Or I guess it's possible that due to her learning of English in Europe she actually picked up the British accent, because she seems fluent no doubt haha
Katie Jo English accent?
I love the aura of her personality it's so lovely and soft and I love her accent
I just started pointe and it so much harder than it looks lol, I've been doing ballet for 8 years. :).
That's what I tell people and they never really believe me and I laugh there's so much you have to do and it's hard!
I know how you feel. I started pointe work 2 years ago and I'm still absolutely rubbish at it. I've been dancing 14 years XD but I'm gonna keep at it for as long as possible even though it's not going to be a career choice for me :)
im 11 amost 12 and I been dancing since I was 3 and im about to start pointe next year is it really that hard.. I looks easy
That's the beauty of it, it's meant to look easy. I broke 3 toe nails and twisted my ankle recently trying to do pointe work. It's fun but takes practice. You will love it though. I'm 16 and have been dancing 14 years :)
i know right i just got pointe shoes it hurts so bad I'm 10 years old
This girl is so pretty. I just love the part when she is rehearsing for the Nutcraker, just rehearsing takes me to another world. Beautiful to look at. Big fan already
She has the cutest accent.
She is amazing and lovely...she deserves to be a famous ballerina since she works so hard
Absolutely stunning, what an athlete. So feminine, strong, beautiful. I love the way she moves, so incredibly elegant.
am i the only one who gets re-reccomended this and watches it everytime
I want her to narrate my life
LPAP 135:
I feel that ballet is the most technical of the dances in this playlist.
She is a gorgeous dancer!
Wow, her rehearsal for the sugar plum fairy was just amazing, it is my favourite ballet and I'm glad that such a gifted ballerina gets to play her!
I'm so jealous. I wish I'd never quit ballet.
ugh, me too :I
I wish I'd been given the opportunity to start!
sakura_rain
me too
sakura_rain You can do it for yourself. There are so many ballet schools for amateurs nowadays.
Much love from a beginner ballerina 🩰🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
can’t believe this video is already 10 years old!! yuhui looks as though she hasn’t aged a day!
Absolutely agree with you
She seems like such a sweetheart!
I've danced ballet for about 2 years and I love it!
I can't get over how beautiful of a dancer this girl is :)
Wow mind-blowing! Big props to all the ballerinas 🙌
I have watched it like a thousand times:) still loving her acent and her lovely personality >_
I'm pursuing a ballerina at the moment so have decided to find out more about ballet, this is beautiful and so is this young lady, Yuhui Choe
Just wondering why she hasn't been promoted to Principal yet. She's much better technically and musically than the latest promotion in the Royal Ballet.
TheRunningOrange The Japanese will oppose it. They hate koreans.
Bnnn Annn she literally lived in Japan?
She’s stunning and her voice is so calming ✨
I started ballet when I was eight doing RAD primary grade with all the 6 year olds. Next week i'm taking my intermediate foundation exam as one of the younger dancers in my grade. Never give up
It’s so inspiring to know she started at 10 years old and now she’s an amazing ballerina
Love her accent! She's a beautiful dancer as well, high arches and great turnout. She makes it look like a breeze, and it keeps me motivated to stick with dancing.
"Eat well, Sleep well, Be healthy." ~Yuhui Choi
:)
How many times am I watching this!
I also enjoy all the rehearsal videos with Yuhui so much❣️
I hope Royal Opera House will continue releasing videos with Yuhui✨
I should comment on something substantial like her schedule or practice of ballet, but one thing i loved in this video is how adorable was the little hint of british accent in her voice. Impressive how she embraced her second or third language !
when did she say she knows how to speak another language?
Ihaba S oh thanks for answering I skipped some parts because my time was short.
I've watched this video so many times now I just love it so much haha
they are amazing-the physical demands aside, they have such immense discipline-how do they keep all the choreography straight?
She seems so lovely and nice, she's a beautiful dancer too it's so cool to see all the hard work ballerinas do everyday
I watched this so many times yuhui is a great person
aw she's so gorgeous and graceful
Of course she ate guys, you can't expect her to go an entire day being active without eating...she would've passed out by now.
i read that as "she ate guys" like for breakfast or smth
All I can say is WoW! I never realized how much work and how hard it is to be a ballerina. This girl is so graceful and beautiful❤❤❤
i thought she said 'i have a slightly dodgy uncle so i have to see a therapist'
Same here
Me too! lol
hold on that wasn't what she said??
martha adelia she said she had a slightly dodgy ankle
Hahahha me too!!
Please do another video like this! I rewatch it so often because of yuhui and all the snippets into their hard long hours
Amazing dedication to her art!
She's wonderful. Such a magical dancer!
Will there ever be an updated "Day in the life of the ballerina"?
So wonderful... to be able to see someone "living the dream." Marvelous! And the best meditation yet...
She does the robot like nobody's business!
She's full of charm and grace
I got tired just watching this.
Omg same
So you can imagine what they go through esp the girls
Me too
