Is it weird that I actually prefer these rehearsal videos to the actual performances? I love how it is just about the movements, no makeup, costumes or special effects! Also I love the simplicity of the white tutu ♥
No, I feel the same. I think we find it fascinating seeing 'behind the scenes', watching these master teachers (for want of a better word) working on every little detail. It makes us feel like we're in at the beginning of the creation of a masterpiece, and there's an intimacy about the rehearsals that makes us realize that these performers are still 'real people'.
Yuhui is such an incredible dancer. There is such grace and fluidity to her movements that keep the ballet from looking stale and rehearsed. An absolute pleasure to watch.
i have been watching a couple of videos of yuhui now and have to say, she is such a gorgeous dancer. so professional, always smiling and extremely attentive! i admire the discipline of ballet dancers so much!
I've neved looked so intensely at a male dancer before. He was absolutely magical and it was so cool to see a male dancer learning the steps. Most rehearsals that i have seen is the main focus on the woman. Absolutely fell for him I've have to admit it 😂
What a delightfully charming and humorous teacher Anthony Dowell is. There are no glum faces in the class. Each comment he makes is tempered with a constructive direction, empathy and a desire to see these dancers perform as perfectly as possible. This rehearsal was a joy to watch. Thank you.
I think these rehearsal videos are so encouraging and inspiring. They show that even the masters have to practice, they still make mistakes, and that ballet doesn't ever get easier- you just become stronger.
Dana JH what a great question:) Well in my experience of my every day ballet routine we are actually allowed to fall in love but its very rare to do that. Cuz mostly every time during rehearsal we more often change male partners and that partner go to other female dancer sooo... Its pretty rare:( But even tho you fall in love there is a 80% chance you can't be together because you can't really spend your time together or see each other. So we try our very best to not fall in love but focus on our career and dreams:)
what I love about ballet is that the mentors can no longer execute the actual movements but that does not matter in the slightest, they hold the art and their ability to convey it to the actual artists is what keeps the art form alive and vibrant.
ha ! he took his criticism like a champ ! even the top dancers get it ! ...just when Mr Dowell mentioned "Fonteyn used to..." I gasped a little so nice to see how the past imbues the future ....and RB preserving a classic line
They both were fabulous! Partnering is so difficult and I'm terrible at it:) Ben will definitely get stronger and he is lucky to be dancing with the always amazing Yuhui. Lovely to the max!
How she is not yet a principal I have no idea - such a pretty dancer. Beautiful arms, feet, everything just glides so effortlessly. She would be such a joy to watch in a classical role like Aurora. I would love to see her in Carousel, even Serenade.
I agree with everyone - it is about time Yuhui gets promoted. She is such an amazing dancer and she deserves the recognition and opportunities of a principal! Question. Why is she partnered with a less experienced guy? You can tell he was a little bit 'deer in headlights'
It’s extremely satisfying to see something going from great to perfect. Love watching these rehearsals. The instructions are so spot on and humorous at times. Really great instructor. I absolutely love Yuhui, she makes everything looks so light and easy and enjoyable, while so much hard work has put into practice. Such a joy to watch her dance.
Wonderful to see the truly gifted living treasure, Sir Anthony Dowell, passing on his wealth of knowledge to these two young dancers. This is how ballet thrives due to the combination of collective knowledge. Without this it is merely mechanical and lacking in the necessary level of emotional intensity. These ballets are so very romantic.
I'm excited to see more of Benjamin. There's a lot comments and critiques about his height, but Baryshnikov had the same issue - and went on to be a more than amazing dancer. I can't wait to see more of him!
+Megan Kahalehili He's just so adorable too! lol He's baby faced and comes across here like someone who's still learning, but that's what I loved about his interaction w/ Yuhui.
awww - Love seeing Anthony Dowell. Love seeing all the little nuances are still obvious in Dowell's body as he coaches them. And I agree; love hearing the reference to Fonteyn.
I enjoyed so much seeing this video of Anthony Dowell coaching Yuhui and Ben. I had the privilege of seeing Dowell dance on numerous occasions. He is a living connection to 20th century dance history and irreplaceable as someone to transmit the highest traditions of academic ballet to the current cohort of brilliant young 21st century talent at the Royal Ballet.
I believe that one should not criticize dancers formed, especially if it is in a company like the Royal Ballet, where he is there is because he has talent. And note that he is still in the corps de ballet, joined the company recently and it is wonderful for him, and most people who criticize are not professional dancers or like him. You can not criticize if a dancer is not one.
I respectfully disagree. Whilst I may not like the gratuitous dancer-bashing that often goes on (after all, these people are all amazingly skilled), I don't think you have to be a professional dancer to have an opinion. People who are not for whatever reason professional dancers themselves can still have knowledge about ballet technique, and even people (such as myself- I would never dream of commenting on technique) who may not be in a position to comment on more technical aspects of the art form can still have an opinion about artistic expression, connection with the audience etc. We are the audience, after all. That said, I agree that people who know less about something should not be too judgemental, and be willing to be corrected.
i think that the pair of ballerinas and this director were a great team , theyre amazing , it makes me miss ballet so much more watching this. i miss that elegance of dancing ballet
I don't know anything about ballet but, she's stunning. It's amazing people can do those things with their bodies; such incredible control and grace. We're so fortunate to be able to see this sort of thing easily. How anyone can dance with Yuhui without turning into a pillar of salt, I don't know. Her smile and manner is mesmerizing!
Sir Anthony wonderful dancer in his time you felt every emotion when he danced and made the charactors he danced breath life he is a wonderful ballet master and dancers are so lucky to have him pass on his knowlede he has gained over the years Sir Antony YOU ROCK !!!!!!!!!!
She’s marvellous. And he’s definitely up and coming. He just looks a little small and physically immature to be partnering her. But he’ll fill out and the partnering strength will come in time.
I loved seeing YuHui. her penche isnt perfect 180- and her back isn't super flexible but she is still SUCH a gorgeous dancer and its so affirming to see someone who doesn't have bones of rubber being so graceful and amazing. as a young dancer I always get so discouraged because I can't get my leg upside my head-- but at the end of the day that's not what matters the most. thank you for being inspiring to me :)
I love this rehearsal footage. Yuhui is amazing as usual but the guy is too young and inexperienced to be dancing this role with her! He could't even apply the corrections properly, probably because of stress. I mean he had to dance with Yuhui in front of a large audience. He looks like he just got his corps contract. Why did they do this? But there is a bigger question: Why on earth Yuhui isn't a principal?? She seriously needs to get promoted by the end of this season!
Islandhorsetaker, I don't know much about ballet, but doesn't a guy have to start somewhere? It's a popular pas de deux that most male dancers at this level will be called upon to perform for the first time.
Lynne Perkins Of course the guy has to start somewhere. I believe corps dancers should be dancing solo roles too sometimes. But having him do the pas de deux with someone who is superior to his level (Yuhui Choe in this case) only makes the guy look bad like he's not good enough whereas if he were to dance this with another artist or first artist, he may have been less nervous and may have done better in my opinion.
An 'artist' is the first rung at the RB so yes, he's just got his contract and has to learn a lot of roles. But he's dancing with someone as good as Yuhui BECAUSE she's good and he's learning. She won't destabilise him through error and can correct her balance if he doesn't support her properly so that she doesn't injure herself, which makes her a great learning partner. Maybe he'll do the same for one of the new women in the corps when he's higher up in the company.
Is it weird that I actually prefer these rehearsal videos to the actual performances? I love how it is just about the movements, no makeup, costumes or special effects! Also I love the simplicity of the white tutu ♥
+Anna-Carolina
Same! :)
Same here, there's something more enchanting with these videos than videos of actual perfomances.
Anna-Carolina me too!!!
I feel the same! It gives me more appreciation for the actual performances by seeing the work put into it.
How is she not a principal yet? Literally even her mistakes look perfect
Overlooked again, shameful from the RB.
Genevieve B. She is a female soloist now.
She might have an injury or a problem which could be a potential injury...
I wonder if it is due to the same reason Meghan Markle recently expressed her frustration about her life in UK...
She is a principal now.
Aaaaw he's cute - and trying so hard.
I agree that YuHui needs to be promoted. She's so polished.
well no wonder...sorry she's got no star quality. And she does not have a charismatic face at all. With all due respect.
*shrugs*. people like what they like.
pro trick: you can watch series on Flixzone. Been using it for watching loads of movies during the lockdown.
@Noah Jared Yup, I've been watching on flixzone for months myself :D
Anthony Dowell... He's the sassy, witty, hilarious uncle in your family
omg YES
+YoursTruly Now get on with it...
They are just looking at her anyway AHAHAH
He also seems to be really nice and friendly, quite unusual for an instructor (during practise)
I wish i had an uncle like that..
Yuhui is such an incredible dancer. There is such grace and fluidity to her movements that keep the ballet from looking stale and rehearsed. An absolute pleasure to watch.
i have been watching a couple of videos of yuhui now and have to say, she is such a gorgeous dancer. so professional, always smiling and extremely attentive! i admire the discipline of ballet dancers so much!
i love how this shows that being the male partner and supporting the girl has it's own rules and technical points and is just as important
Glad you enjoy them Amethyst. Have you subscribed? If not, it's well worth doing so you don't miss future films
How can ballet dancers not fall in love with each other?
Dana JH what a great question:)
Well in my experience of my every day ballet routine we are actually allowed to fall in love but its very rare to do that. Cuz mostly every time during rehearsal we more often change male partners and that partner go to other female dancer sooo... So we try our very best to not fall in love but focus on our career and dreams:)
Aloha Jenna that’s tough 😔😔😔
well yuhui is now married to nehemiah kish so...it happens sometimes 😉
Dana JH better to be professional, I'm not a dancer but just saying
what I love about ballet is that the mentors can no longer execute the actual movements but that does not matter in the slightest, they hold the art and their ability to convey it to the actual artists is what keeps the art form alive and vibrant.
I love how Sir Anthony Dowell and Yuhui interact at 15:12. You can tell they’re like family in the company.
Anthony Dowell was such a wonderful dancer.
Yuhui is just beautiful. Her moves are flowing. Her overall aura when she dances is perfection. :)
Anthony Dowell is marvelous, what a treasure he is.
Sir Anthony Dowell is as legendary in the studio as he was on stage! What a treat for the dancers working with him!
when will yuhui finally become a principal dancer
apparently we still have to wait
four years since your comment and your question still remains
😭
six years since your comment and your question still remains
Seven years….😔😔
I love the sense of humor
Great teacher
love the Ballet Master's sense of humor lol. Yuhui is absolutely exquisite! She is the most graceful dancer I have seen.
Yuhui's lines are to die for
Yuhui for principal! I went to her aurora debut with hirano a few months ago. She is so sweet and stunning - radiates sheer joy with every movement
ha ! he took his criticism like a champ ! even the top dancers get it ! ...just when Mr Dowell mentioned "Fonteyn used to..." I gasped a little so nice to see how the past imbues the future ....and RB preserving a classic line
They both were fabulous! Partnering is so difficult and I'm terrible at it:) Ben will definitely get stronger and he is lucky to be dancing with the always amazing Yuhui. Lovely to the max!
She's exquisite! It is lovely to see someone love to dance as much as Yuhui clearly does!
that woman is the most graceful dancer ive ever seen
How she is not yet a principal I have no idea - such a pretty dancer. Beautiful arms, feet, everything just glides so effortlessly. She would be such a joy to watch in a classical role like Aurora. I would love to see her in Carousel, even Serenade.
He is really cute! And it makes me go aww~~
I agree with everyone - it is about time Yuhui gets promoted. She is such an amazing dancer and she deserves the recognition and opportunities of a principal!
Question. Why is she partnered with a less experienced guy? You can tell he was a little bit 'deer in headlights'
Her pointe is everything!

I absolutely love Yuhui, she makes everything looks so light and easy and enjoyable, while so much hard work has put into practice. Such a joy to watch her dance.
"They're all looking at her, anyway"
lol
How can you not!!!! She is stunning, delicate, graceful...
Yeah the whole point of a male partner is to help showcase the girl
10:00

What these rehearsal videos show so well is that you can have the most wonderful technique but it's the details that really make it shine.
Yuhui is beautiful, Ben is gorgeous, and Anthony is amazing ❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️
Someone make Yuhui a principal already!
Why. Isn't. Yuhui. A. Principal. Ugh.
awww - Love seeing Anthony Dowell. Love seeing all the little nuances are still obvious in Dowell's body as he coaches them. And I agree; love hearing the reference to Fonteyn.

The detail and wisdom of the recommendations by Mr. Dowell are marvelous, future dancers can benefit from studying this coaching. ❤️

I agree with you, but I'm not talking about giving opnion, but to criticize the artist about his art.
I've waited a lifetime for Yuhui to be Aurora. Absolutely beautiful
Ugh the look on his face at 7:26 is just perfect
lol what does that look mean
i think that the pair of ballerinas and this director were a great team , theyre amazing , it makes me miss ballet so much more watching this. i miss that elegance of dancing ballet
Yuhui Choe is amazing!!
yuhui is so talented and graceful.

I don't know anything about ballet but, she's stunning. It's amazing people can do those things with their bodies; such incredible control and grace. Absolutely love Yuhui! I'm hoping Principle soon for her. And I see a lot of potential for Ben down the line.
Yuhui Choe for principal!!!!It's about time to make her a principla!!!!!
I do love watching these rehearsals. The genius of dancers AND coaches!!
This is the length we all expect from a Royal Ballet rehearsal video, so thank you indeed. :)

Yuhui you are breathtaking!
Yuhui's amazing, love her!!
This marvelous Anthony Dowell is adorably fabulous. He makes this rehearsal a delight!
She is so beautiful and graceful. He needs a bit polishing up, but it's all good.
Yuhui Choi is extraordinary.
The male dancer is so adorable lol
Yuhui. Principal. NOW.
Poor guy lol, but at least this gives the perspective of how hard ballet can be. Very enjoyable to watch, thanks!
I simply fall in love with ballet because of Yuhui❤️
She’s marvellous. And he’s definitely up and coming. He just looks a little small and physically immature to be partnering her. But he’ll fill out and the partnering strength will come in time.
What an honour to be coached by Sir Anthony Dowell
I've watched this video countless times and still get goosebumps on the lifts, they do it so beautifully even if it's only the rehearsal😍🥰💕
Please O'hare promote Yuhui ! We've been waiting forever.
Still waiting…. Seven years later….
Anthony Dowell: such a great dancer and now such a marvelous coach! So interesting to watch him!😍🤩
The guy is so handsome!
I'm in love with Ben
14:48 Anthony: "now offer your hand".......(Ben not offering his hand)..."I SAID OFFER YOUR HAND BOY!!!"
Just wonderful, watching Anthoney Dowell coaching the next generation...and with a smile to boot!
The only thing i can say is how beautiful this is, inspiring.
Can someone tell me again why yuhui isn't a principal? Seriously why? She is literally one of the best
I love watching these practices they are so fun and when you see the older tutors going "yum dum dum dum" and getting sassy with the young ones
Is there something higher than first soloist?u
blueraven166 The ranks in the Royal Ballet company go as shown: Corps, Senior Corps, Soloist, First Soloist, Principal. No primas unfortunately.
Islandhorsetaker, I don't know much about ballet, but doesn't a guy have to start somewhere? It's a popular pas de deux that most male dancers at this level will be called upon to perform for the first time.

Makes me happy to know that he’s a soloist now.
If I got the opportunity to sit in the audience you would see a smile on my face the whole time!
Yuhui Choe is so effervescent! I enjoy watching this way too much. :D i love the learning process.
I save this so I can watch it over and over so lovely so beautiful so grande
In addition to being a fine dance Sir Anthony a fine coach and instructor
BRAVO SIR ANTHONY
