IN THIS VIDEO
After a 2-year break thanks to Covid lockdowns, the Gold Coast Marathon was back in 2022.
This is one of Australia's biggest marathon festivals along one of the most scenic routes you will find anywhere. There are magnificent Gold Coast beach views, canal views and huge skyscapers along a course which is almost flat.
I had not had the best preparation with Covid striking early in the training block, but I still went into the race with some confidence of getting close to 3 hours.

It was a great effort Neil given the pain/discomfort you were experiencing.
Something that jumped out at me watching this video was seeing Craig Wilson’s expression of pride in himself achieving a sub 3. The emotion and elation at the finish line is something special to witness at the time of crossing the line. Capturing Craig so deservingly happy with his effort right at the finish is gold in my opinion. I couldn’t help but smile. Just brilliant Craig. He looked like he could go run it again
Absolutely agree Geoff. Craig was buzzing and it was great to share that joy with him at the finish line. 👍☺
Awesome effort to push through even when you know it's not gone to plan. Takes courage to put yourself out there through thick and thin on camera. Your inspirational Neil.
As usual @Alan_Shrimpton is spot on. You're a L E G E N D Neil!
Cheers mate. 👍☺
Thanks Alan. There will be other days and races. We should always remember not to beat ourselves up because of one bad run. I'm very fortunate to do what I do, so I'm already planning the next target. 👍☺
Well done Neil! Seems tough race but you know what your time is unreal mate, 3:08 is my dream! You are inspiring, have a great recovery and enjoy searching next race for sub3 lol
Cheers mate, really appreciate that. Things didn't go to plan, but still had an awesome time.👍☺
Nice to see you at the end there Neil. It was a fantastic day, the weather held off and the crowd showed up. Marathon is a roller coaster ride, that's why we love it. (tnc_runner)
And you too Bob (you will have to tell me the story behind this name when we next catch up). Cracking run from you and was happy to share it with you at the finish. Recover well.👍☺
Well done Neil!!! Was so great to see you (and everyone!) run on Sunday. We (me, hubby and Master 12yo) were cheering from the 34/39km Asics entertainment point. Great atmosphere!
Hi Jude, yeah I remember seeing you. Just couldn't get your name out as I ran past. Always nice to have a bit of support like yours late in a marathon. Thanks.👍☺
Awesome work Neil!!
Cheers mate. Appreciate all your support. 👍☺
Nice video and congrats on the great time! Gold coast was a blast!
The Gold Coast turned it on, the atmosphere was fantastic this year. Hope you enjoyed the run and got what your were after. 👍☺
@@runwithwoody yep got my pb! Haha glad that all the major races are all coming back!
Great run Neil, not too shabby at all with that time, there's a sub3 in you still one day i'm sure, and if not keep running those times you'll be a happy man anyway. I will tune in for the review. I'm sure you noticed you caught the race winner on camera to !!
Thanks mate. Yeah, the winner flew by me. My mate got a photo with him the day before. I hope you are right about the sub-3 - I'm going to keep trying. 👍☺
Great video. Really summed up the experience. I came down from Sydney for the GC marathon, my first ever mara. Ended at 3:29. So happy with it. And a great experience overall!
Great run Sameer, congrats. Have you caught the bug and are already planning the next one? Thanks for watching the video. 👍☺
@@runwithwoody Yep - you're on the money there. I've booked for the Melbourne Mara in Oct! Now just trying to figure out how to get faster.
I tried seeing if I'd be in the background, but clearly I'm too slow to be anywhere close to you. Great video nonetheless! It's epic watching everyone else's gc marathon videos. I thought I was the only one who filmed my experience. Guess not!
Cheers mate. Is your footage online somewhere to have a look at?☺👍
Well done. Incredible run . Way to fight through it and finish strong. Keep up the great work
Thanks Jonathan. It was a great day, even if things didn't pan out the way I hoped. I cannot wait for the next one now.👍☺
Good effort Neil
Cheers guys. Keep up the good work with the daily vlogs.👍☺
You always have been an inspiration.... well done 👏 💪💪💪🔥🔥
Thanks mate, really appreciate that. 👍☺
Excellent video really enjoyed watching it Neil. Big congratulations on your marvelous achievement 💪👏💥🔥✅
Thanks mate. Had a blast out there, even though it probably didn't come across all that well in the video. Been following you on Strava and some of your video, keep up the great work. 👍☺
Great effort Neil to push on despite the obvious challenges. Inspiring mate. To go sub 3:10 with all that walking? Incredible
Cheers Mike. It was still a good day and I cannot wait for the next one. Thanks for your support. 👍☺
Incredible achievement - post COVID, niggles....Thanks for taking us on the journey Neil! :D
Thanks for your support Tim. It may not have looked like it, but I had a blast and it was great to be back racing the marathon again. 👍☺
Great job and great video. Looks like a fun race to run someday.
Thanks Greg. It's a great marathon, almost pancake flat, and the atmosphere was probably one of the best that I can recall and I have been going there most years since 2008.👍☺
That was so good to watch, brings back those wonderful painful memories 😂 well done mate 🏃♂️ 👍
Thanks Kelvin, you should come down next year.👍☺
@@runwithwoody I'm there 100% just need to get this nerve issue fixed.
well done Neil, good run mate. How good was the atmosphere out there? I enjoyed it so much that I spent an extra 90 mins out there.
Thanks Rodney. The atmosphere was incredible, probably the best I have experienced there. The finish line was brilliant, with so many just hanging around and talking to each other. Fantastic. Hope you had a good run.👍☺
Great effort Neil. Any idea what caused the hips to play up?
Thanks badger. Yep, the hips? It's in the next video, out tomorrow morning. 👍☺
Well done! What a a great time! So glad the weather was perfect as well. I was able to run most of it but the last 10kms was a real struggle. My legs had nothing & my right glute was screaming. But, I managed to run (shuffle) the last 2kms to the finish. I tried to do a recovery run today but my legs were not being cooperative! I still did it though. Could only manage 5kms then walked. I found that my hamstrings were painful & tight. Is that normal? Anyway, great run!
Hi mate, everything sounds about normal after running a marathon. Don't push things, let the body tell you when it is ready. The main thing is be patient and don't rush back too soon, that's usually a recipe for an injury. Congrats on getting to the finish, sounds like you really got the marathon experience with the leg issues. Rest up and recover well.👍☺
@@runwithwoody thanks!
Maybe not sub 3 but still great time. Congratulations
Cheers Neil. There will be other races and chances. Thanks for watching. 👍☺
i am very disappointed, i don`t understand, why you changed your mind....at the end you got what you asked for and to be honest i am not sorry you felt the pain.
as a coach and youtuber, you should show all the new runners, how marathoning is done and how much joy it can be to run a marathon....all joy, no pain...that is what we want...i really thought you were smart enough to run a happy run
Cheers mate. Always appreciate your honesty. We all have different goals. There will be other days to meet mine. No damage done with the early hoisting of the white flag, so it's onto the next target. 👍☺
@@runwithwoody although we all have different goals, staying injury free is getting more and more important, as healing gets more difficult as we age. So i guess, not getting injured in this race counts as success........i am sure you have more than one sub 3 in you, but you gotta be more careful
