Bela Lugosi's accent was indeed brilliant. It was also completely natural. He was Hungarian and the sole reason Dracula imitations sound the way they do. A Dracula imitation is a Bela Lugosi imitation.

The Wolfman is credited as being played by Lon Chaney, but it's technically Lon Chaney Jr. His father, Lon Chaney (Sr.), is famous for playing the Phantom of the Opera in 1925. And, that was horror legend Vincent Price as the Invisible Man, well at least it's his voice. A&C also have films where they "meet" Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde (another good one), the Mummy, and the Invisible Man. Boris Karloff (the original Frankenstein's monster) didn't want to do Meets Frankenstein but was ultimately convinced to do A&C Meets The Killer Boris Karloff in 1949.

As Leonard Maltin has observed, what makes the film work is that the monsters are played straight -- that is, it's only the presence of Abbott and Costello that makes it a comedy.
On the other hand, Young Frankenstein is a satire. Marty, if you haven't already seen them, I recommend you watch the first three Universal Frankenstein films (Frankenstein, Bride of, and Son of) before you watch Young Frankenstein, since that film makes many specific references to scenes in the original movies. (And they're all worth watching for their own sake.)

One of my favourite movies from when I was a kid. Stuff like this would reliably turn up on tv on rainy Saturday mornings. One thing that impresses me now is that Chaney and Lugosi take it completely seriously and don't turn their characters into comedy figures - the comedy is A&C's job.

The very first time I saw Abbott (Bud/"Chick") and Costello (Lou/"Wilbur") Meet Frankenstein was in 1961 or in 1962 when I was 5 or 6 on TV. It was a bit scary for me back then even though it was a horror-comedy film. Bela Lugosi was the original 'Dracula' in the 1931 film, and Lon Chaney Jr. was the original 'Wolfman' in the 1941 film. 'The Werewolf of London' is a 1935 film starring Henry Hull, and it is an excellent film. Glenn Strange did played the role of Frankenstein's monster later on in the 1940s and he also did quite a few western fims. 'Abbott and Costello' Meet Frankenstein' is my all time favorite film of all the Abbott and Costello films. And yes, that was Vincent Price as the Invisible Man at the end of the film. And he did play the role of the Invisible Man in 1940 'The Invisible Man Returns' which that is an excellent film. I really enjoyed your reaction to 'Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.'

This is a nostalgic movie for me. When I was a kid back in the early 1970s, way before cable TV and VCRs, this used to be shown around Halloween every year on a local TV station. It was an event for my family and friends. When say I saw it at least ten times as a kid, I don't mean we popped the tape or disc in anytime we wanted to watch it. That means at least ten times, my family dedicated the time once a year to arranging our schedules to fit a viewing of this movie in. It's a favorite.

Recommendation: This 30 October will be the 85th Anniversary of Orson Welles's original radio broadcast of his Mercury Theatre on the Air's production of The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. Watch the theatrical trailer for "Mark of The Vampire" and you'll see him narrating the trailer and naming the cast, including his own name. Truth be told though, he was born with the name of Bela Blasko in the town of Lugos, Hungary.

It's ALIIIIVE!!! LOL. If you're going to watch Young Frankenstein in the future I would suggest you watch at least the first three Universal Frankenstein movies before watching Young Frankenstein so all the jokes in it make sense. 1 Frankenstein, 2 Bride of Frankenstein and 3 Son of Frankenstein all have elements in them that are spoofed in YF. I'm not saying you should do reactions to all of them, but give them a watch. One Abbott & Costello film I'd recommend that you'll seldom see a request for is one of their earliest films called "Hold That Ghost" (1941) which was released immediately after their film "Buck Privates". It has the original version of the moving candle skit in it! It's a hilarious movie as well.

Recently I went through the Abbott & Costello film series. This film works best if you watch the four Universal Monster movies. I don't recommend Little Giant and Time of Their Lives which were made while the two were not speaking to each other, also Costello really needed a year off to grieve following the loss of his son. Oh, and if you're very sensitive be warned there is a brief "blackface" number in The Naughty Nineties.

I have a question, when you are giving your commentary, you cut out some of the movie each time sometimes you cut out some of the best bits. Is there a reason why you just can’t pause it and then speak and then start it again?

It’s a reaction video numb nuts. The point of this whole video is to see Marty’s comments and reaction to a film he has never seen before.

Thank you so much Kaz, exactly! I never understand this kind of comment. If people just want to watch the film, then do that. A reaction has just that... reactions and commentary too. Thank you for watching Kaz and for the great comment
