Same here, Surf's Up is an unbelievable masterpiece, nothing's matched it in terms of composition, feeling, performance, it's just alien, but intimately familiar. What a work of genius.
I 100% cannot get through this song without tears welling up in my eyes. This is the musical equivalent of painting the Sistine Chapel. Just pure artistic mastery.
@@andrewallen1083 Oh they really did. Day In the Life, Let It Be, Come Together and so on. Just enjoy this masterpiece without drawing pointless comparisons
Back in 2000, after singing it with Vince Gill and Jimmy Webb, David Crosby walked off the stage and asked Brian where he came up with those f’ing chords.
Nobody's mentioned it yet, this was a 70s album. The song was taken from a greater unfinished song cycle Brian's "Smile" from 1967. The whole album was eventually finished by Brian in the early 2000s. Not quite the masterpiece he originally envisioned since its not quite consistent BUT it has some other moments like this beauty, ending with "Good Vibrations" Worth hearing if you love The Beach Boys
Originally recorded in 66! I believe some of that recording is still in this version. The rest of the band weren't ready for it. They got a new manager and he talked them into putting this on the very next album and making it the title track. Good decision. Arguably Brian's peak.
The whole of the first movement is the 1966 recording with the piano take vocals and the wrecking crew recorded instrumental, the 2nd part has a few overdubs from 1971, I believe the starting harmony and the moog bass is from 1971 overdubs. The whole 3rd movement is from 1971 except the piano and Brian's vocal. Most of this track particularly Brian's vocal is from the piano demo - ua-cam.com/video/LaNL_77SQMo/v-deo.html
The best version of this song is off the “Smile Sessions” album that came out in 2011. This version is fine but is missing some vocals, I hear some rushing and dragging from cutting, and some messy double tracking that the uploader attempted. The smile sessions version is more polished and just feels better
Yeah, the production is good (considering this is more like a demo), but the real magic is always in the chords and the melodies and the countermelodies and the harmonies and the...
Very NICE reaction video. I am a lifelong Beach Boys fan and I am so glad that you chose this beautiful piece to react upon! You've both earned my subscription and a BIG thumbs up. Thank you!
Thanks for reacting to this, it's such a staggering masterpiece. The melody is so genius, the composition challenging but rich... And that "Surf's Up, mmm mmm ..." section just knocks the wind out of me. "Aboard a tidal wave" seems like a reflection on their overly happy early "surf" tunes, and how dark Brian's life turned.
As much as I'm not a fan but I do know they were leaps and bounds ahead of most in production of sound and Zappa did buy their recording truck off them..
First release was on Surf's Up album. Carl produced , sang the first section and then added Brian's studio part from Smile Sessions in the middle. Carl/Brian finished it up. This version sounds like a demo with all Brian..
Through Beach Boys archival releases and bonus tracks you can find versions of this with Brian singing all the verses and complete versions of the short song you hear being sung at the end, Child is Father of The Man.
I remember being a kid and being given this album, which had just been released, and immediately being blown away by the cover. It was the early 70s and people were just coming around to the realization about how the nation had screwed the Native Americans. It was right there, in your face, bravely so, and I just couldn't look away. Of course, the music was a mind-blowing expedition into uncharted territory.
Fantastic song, but I'm not sure what version this is because that video has missing vocals and what sounds like pitch editing at 2:09. For something more official, I'd recommend listening to the Smile Sessions version as it's the most original rendition, recorded in 1966, because they recorded another version in 1971 for an album of the same name, "Surf's Up" (the art present in this video is the album cover) and Brian Wilson's own version from 2004 on his album "Brian Wilson Presents Smile". The planned Smile album is a whole other story on its own though.
I've listened to this song countless times since I discovered it in the 80s at 13 or 14. I'll always remember being mesmerized by it the night I first heard it. I swear it transports me instantly to that night. 🙂 My musical tastes changed, and I've preferred metal for 30 years. Still, the Beach Boys are still my favorite, and this is my favorite song of them all. It never fails to stun me with its beauty, especially the second half.
Surf's Up is Brian Wilson's peak. A total masterpiece. A difficult song, but most rewarding. This beats Good Vibrations, and all of Pet Sounds put together. The song's end is a religious experience for me. I think I am in heaven when I hear it. Pure perfection. Can you tell I like this song?
I don’t know why I never got into the BBs. I always like a song but I lose that feeling in a couple of minutes. I love their back story tho, especially Brian’s turbulent life. And some of their harmonies.
Dennis pulled his songs "4th of July" and "(Wouldn't It Be Nice to) Live Again" from the album - legend has it Carl was adamant that "Surf's Up" close the album, but Dennis felt thematically it would have flowed better for "(Wouldn't It Be Nice to) Live Again" to follow "'Til I Die" to close out the album. Whatever the real reasons, "Surf's Up" would have been a much stronger album if those two songs had been included. I think this version sounds much better ua-cam.com/video/i1HJ35p1Bm8/v-deo.html
I bet this is a remaster. This doesn't sound like the original vinyl release from 1971. There are voices missing and the timing is different. It's cleaned up, slightly simplified and still good, but not as good as the original.
@@SightAfterDark Yes,it has the same Brian vocals in the first part of the song. The surfs up version has Carl singing the first part. They only replaced the cover for the one of Surfs up
I know it's a minority view, but I really think Carl sang this better, on the " Surf's Up " '71 album. I think his voice is just better for the song. But then, Carl was always my favorite BB. ----------------MJL, 76 y/o
Surf's Up is the greatest song I've ever heard. It is startling how few reacters have reacted to it.
My favorite song, too

It’s right up there. Beyond belief.

One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written
I am absolutely estatic to see this album getting appreciation and attention for the masterpiece that it is!!! 👏👏👏👏
This song is a masterpiece.
I just got chills from your comment.
Masterpiece!
I'm sorry but the Beatles didn't achieve this level of otherworldlyness

When Brian put together a good tune with Van Dyke Parks it was like hearing God's music. Bliss👌

I love 'Feel Flows' and 'Sail On Sailor.' Like this and so much of Brian's output, just transcendent and brilliant. Transformational
YES!!! I cannot agree more!!
Feel Flows was written by Carl. It’s great.
Pure perfection. A sing that's called "Surfs Up" and no mention of surfing. Check out the album of the same name. Bloody awesome 👌
“Surf’s up for the tidal wave” is the key line from the song.

I have the original Surf's Up vinyl. Very under appreciated album. Brian Wilson at his best!
Brain Wilson and Van Dyke Parks, what a fantastic pairing.
Brain?

Very true. Thanks for watching!
Maybe you've heard Our Prayer ? Another BB classic.
“God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys was proclaimed by Paul McCartney the most beautiful pop song he’d ever heard.
Those guys from Hawthorne got me home from south east Asia , they defined my generation, and still no love .
Great reaction y'all! One of my favorite songs and one of the most sophisticated songs to show up on a rock album ever. So so good.
Thanks so much for watching!

My favorite by the Beach Boys along with "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes & Villains". SO different from their early stuff. Thanks!
Thanks for watching Mike!
Yeah, it's like early Beatles vs Late Beatles
My second concert. 1964. Trini Lopez was first. But the Beach Boys always had a soft spot.

It's a wonderful song. But the version with Carl Wilson's lead is the best version for me. He has such a pure voice.

From the Wordsworth poem, ‘My Heart Leaps Up.’

Big favorite of mine.
I hear how this song got into McCartney's head. Syncopation, bass line, harmony....he was admittedly influenced by the Beach Boys.
Amazing track
The song so intricate.
I don't know if it's my favorite song of theirs but it's certainly my most played beach boys song. Great reaction
