Good one, Sanjay. I had attended a concert of Sri.TNS in Houston. I was pregnant then and had asked for a song to be sung. The chit was sent through a friend. Even before my friend could return to the seat sir started to sing that song. Amazing. I went and thanked him after the concert.
Wonderful tribute to a musician amongst musicians, Sanjayji. In December 1995, during the season, I attended some 9 concerts by Seshagopalanji, each more outstanding than the other. Virtuosity apart, Seshagopalanji did not repeat a single piece in any of those concerts.
Kudos to Sanjay Subramanyam in his short note has crisply brought out the greatness of TNS and is on par with GNB for the present generation of music lovers and vidwans. He is undoubtedly among the top five all time greats of Carnatic music and his service to the cause of music is unmatchable
The very first song I heard of Shri TN Seshagopalan sir is "Nada Murali Gana Vilola Kalyana Krishna" when I was around 7-8 years old. It was in a cassette in an uncle's house. I re winded and heard it many times and tried to impress my music teacher. 😁 "Ennappa TN Seshagopalan sir kekka arambichittiya.....unakku innom romba dooram poka vendiyatha irukku". The Journey still continues. I was lucky to hear him many times live and also host him through SPIC-MACAY
Totally enjoyed this very special note.I grew up listening to Sri.TNS sir's concerts at Madurai TVS nagar,Sri Kodhanda Ramar kovil ,when he was growing up.As you said, with brisk Yochana or Vezha mugatharase are still in my mind.We didn't know the finishing time of the concerts. It would be kept going on and on.So,after attending few concerts,we started finishing our dinner in the evening itself and kept our beds ready to lay down and then would go to listen the concerts.Amazing were those days.Recollecting old memories. He used to come to teach Sri.Madurai R.Sunder.If we see his gray colour scooter,me and my friend go near that house with sharpening ears to listen to his singing but in vain.😆😆
Amazing episode Sanjay. Such an amazing trip down memory lane about the one and only TNS sir. That quick and majestic walk to the stage is such a memory for all of us who grew up seeing his live concerts from those days. In your sharing I could relive my own thrill of the experience. I think once you described him as the equivalent of Tendulkar. You once again reminded us why that’s the apt comparison.
I was fortunate to listen to TNS concert in Indian Institute of World Culture which was a special one since it was in only one raga Thodi! He rendered kritis with starting note from each note from Aarohana! I was spell bound since he did not stop or pause between kritis carrying on until completion which was about 2.5 hrs.....It was a unique one of it's kind experience for me. Thanks Sanjay sir for this episode.
What an engaging series! Although I am completely outside this orbit, I have experiences Sanjay Subramanian's genius in person just last December and am amazed and inspoired to hear him talk about his genius predecessors in such a manner. These giants truly represent the heights of the human spirit.
Fabulous Sanjay.. your narration style with the right amount of facial expression and dramatism is spell binding. I for one didn't get a chance to hear TNS when he was younger, as i was a child n could not grasp his music..by the time I really started appreciating music, his voice had decaded and there were a lot of Shruti problems..
I think there are not many amongst musicians who have listened to senior vidwans with so much of respect and admiration as vid. Sanjay subramanyam has done. That has made him occupy the high position that he commands today. He is so humble when he talks of other stalwarts in the field.
Love these episodes and really enjoy listening to these stories and recollections. Thank you so much for doing this. It’s such a gift and blessing.🙏🏽👍🏽
A brilliant appraisal by Sunjay Subramanyan. Would like, however , like some others, to learn how the great TNS discreetly ' helped' you to recall the forgotten words in ur katcheri.
Ayodhya Mandapam, Sri Rama Samaj is really an open air theater and a great gift for the Public to hear all stalwarts singing and Harikstha Kalatchepam. It is still an event. It should go into Guinness Book of World Records which doesn't charge the public, but charge them with an urge to listen to programs.
Ah ha..sir all through your narration...my mind just travelled with your stories! What a beautiful recollection of Nostalgic memories and TN Seshagopalan mama..the ever cheerful, charming and humble yet a legendary towering personality! The best part of Neyveli Sathanagopalan sir's reaction to your Sindhu Bhairavi's comment! So glad that you guys all grew up together with such legendary artistes! Lucky you! I must say sir
I have been listening to his concerts and bhajans since late 1960s. He is God's gift to sampradaya music. My father used to say " கச்சேரி கேட்கும்போது உன்னை அறியாமல் கண்ணீர் வந்தால் அது தான் சங்கீதம். His rendition of ராமநாதம் பாஜெஹம் in Pantuvarali especially நிரவல் and ஸ்வர பிரஸ்தாரம் இஸ் out of the world. In one concert held in Vani Mahal he sang மருகெலரா ( ஜயந்த ஶ்ரீ). The rendering of swaraa was phenomenal. After the duel between the main performer and accompanist ( I think it was Shri. M Chandrasekaran), chandru sir asked " என்ன இன்னமும் எவ்வளவு இருக்கு என்றார் ". The applause lasted for about 4 minutes. And a thunderous one also. சுப்புடு சார் சொன்னது இன்னமும் நினைவில் உள்ளது. " A star is born. He will rule the musical world for about 40-50 years.". Prophetic words. My humble salutations to him.
The great critic Subbudu's prediction has come true.As Umayalapuram Shivaraman sir has said elsewhere the awards run after him to get themselves honoured .What a tribute by the great mridangam maestro.
Really enjoying this series sir! Have watched every one of them and keep waiting for the next :) I recently came across a youtube audio where you had analysed a recording of Madurai Mani Iyer. Found it very insightful. Would be really nice if you did a series of guided listening sessions, where you analyse some musical pieces of the masters and give your insights on it. It would really help students to learn what to look for when listening and how to adapt the learning into our singing.
Excellent down the line memories; beautifully narrated. In 1983 I listened on Shankarabaranam in Madurai Athimoolam Pillai Agraharam Murugan Temple, Madurai. No words to explain that alapana. Still ringing in my ears.
After watching your words on Mr T.N.Seshagopalan.Watched his videos ,wow what a performance he has given and especially saw the sindhubhairavi concert mind-blowing.
Very well narrated. I re lived the moments of his walk up with PV and PA at Ayodhya Mandabam. Majestic indeed. How he prompted the verse has however not been told😢. He plays with words. Can’t imagine how he acted it out😳
Thanks, DearSS for regaling us with your super, interesting musical anecdotes.. 🙏🏾I have heard you perform here in Toronto many times and it is a pleasure listening to your music.
The words are from your heart Sanjay sir. Really truly great.. your heart and the vidwan Seshagopalan sir. Timely bruhas, swara korvaigal, phenomenal voice, excellent presentation. We can feel these in your kacheri too. God bless.
Love your notes and strokes 👍 TNS is surely impeccable in depth, breadth and all other dimensions! And someone “out there” is already recounting their stories about another master: you!
Your episodes, though brief, immediately transports one to the realm of not only music but a soul-searching experience - they are so rejuvanating, de-stressing and nostalgic. By the way, I was fortunate to attend your concert yesterday at Coimbatore organized by Rajalakshmi Fine Arts. It was wonderful and mesmerising as always. I especially liked Sri Ranjani, Khamboji and the Mukhari - the RTP was superb. The rendition of Bharatidasan's lyrics in Desh was touching as usual. My humble and deep appreciations. May Almighty be always with you, and through you we also can deserve the divine blessings🙏
Very interesting narration by SS sir. I once listened to Saveri raga alapana by TNS in UA-cam and I realised how great a Vidwan he is. Amazing alapana. Listen to it and you will agree to it.
🙏 I sincerely request Sanjay Sir to highlight the technical musical aspects unique to his mastery instead of general reverential appreciation. Next generation of musicians will be grately benefited in this UA-cam recordings learning times.
Sir. It is so very refreshing to hear your anecdotes on some of the greats of Carnatic Music. Would request you to do one with Sri Ramnad Krishnan, S Kalyanaraman, M D Ramanathan, KVN and Ariyakudi
Couldn't agree more on the dilemma artists go through as they mature in singing and the fire in their belly getting a few butterflies when they witness vidhwan musicians in the audience. Well articulated Sanjay. Also Nothing wrong in doing cut and paste in music. Knowledge should mutiply when it is shared.
Really Sri Ram Samaj - Ayodhya Mandapam is a blessed bhoomi. We get all stalwarts katcheri during every season. Those were the times. Another one at West Mambalam Station T.Nagar side Pillaiyar koil events. Those were golden days. Could you please give details and lyrics of the song you tell about your Guru sing "" Ambikai Jagadambikai ...". Regards. ""
Very well narrated. Surprised that you forgot the Sahithyam & the way Sri.Seshagopal Sir helped you discretely to recollect that sahithyam and you continued with the Keerthanam, very interesting..... with that🙏😊
As usual a very nice presentation and these narrations lead me to go and look for the renderings of the greats of the music referred by you. I consider this as an opportunity for education. Thanks for this series. 🙏

Brilliant recollections and respectful acknowledgement of one of the Titans of carnatic music !!
4.5 hours well Said Sir. Really want more of these long concerts
Wow! For a massive TNS and Sanjay fan like me, this is just pure gold👌

Very nice narration.
Just loving
I remember the Odukathur mutt concert episode. TnS sir was staying with us and we were there as witness to how sir prompted the lyrics😀😀
Subtlety, sharpness and ‘sledai’, are the forte of TNS. They are in his DNA! As every talk and interview of his would testify.
I am curious how the lyrics were prompted! Was it a gesture or some sign!?
Love this. Sanjay’s narration is excellent
Very interesting and valuable series..simple and practical narration. Enjoying... good..
