SKR was one of the most outstanding musicians, whose greatness was not recognised when he was alive. Really regret, THE MUSIC ACADEMY, failed to HONOUR ITSELF BY AWARDING HIM THE TITLE OF SANGEETHA KALANIDHI. I remember, visiting him when he was staying in WEST MADA STREET, where VOLETTI was also a tenant in the house of SRI GOPALAKRISHNAN , who was a A GRADE ARTIST in the AIR. I think, it is now Adayar Anandha Bhavan. He has accompanied my brother GNB in more than 500 concerts throughout the country. My brother used to talk very highly of both SKR, MLV and CALCUTTA KRISHNAMURTHY, who used to visit us regularly. I think, he joined my brother as a disciple in mid 1945. My GOLDEN MEMORIES OF MY ASICIATION WITH HIM from mid 1940s, will ever remain evergreen memory. He visited my flat sometime in late 1960s, when my daughter was just singing. Hearing her singing, he asked me to send her to his house, so that both SKR and his wife BHUSHANI could train her. Actually, for her marriage, it was BHUSHANI, who sang for the reception. She was privileged to learn a few sings , directly from him.

Good one. My guru late N.Nagaraja was the roommate of Sri Kalyanaraman when they were bachelors. He always used to share his experience of listening to Sk's practises during his upcomming time

Really fantastic and your language within appropriate words is beautiful. During his younger days we were neighbors to his sisters. He used to visit and used to do sadhagams. I was around six years old. A very and lovely person and I used to sit and listen without knowing the values. Your speech made me to recall this memory. Though now I am 75 Certain things never go out of your memory. Very many thanks and looking forward to more of your episodes. Mangalani bhavanthu

Huge TSK fan, my guru Kallidaikurichi Ambicha mama (Sankaranarayanan) would speak hours on Kalyanaraman sir as he learnt from him. Thank you for all these small snippets. I wish you spoke more. It brings out many memories of my guru and my days with him. He spoke very highly of your guru Culcutta Krishnamurthy sir. Thank you again.

Such a lovely tribute to the great SKR, the unequivocally acclaimed musician. I am never at a loss of words except when it comes to describing SKR, Thank you so much for this! So happy that people are getting to know of that great musician unfortunately more so after his passing. Even little kids talk about him and listen to him these days, which is so heartwarming. ❤ TO SKR… RIP.

Thank you Sanjay Sir for completing such a wonderful collection of topics. My uncle S.I. Krishnamachari (USA) was a huge fan & friend and always would talk about how a complete musician Shri Kalyanaraman was.

As a kid when I was first learning Carnatic music, I was like a lot of children who would see it more like a chore than an object of interest. I was never keen on spending hours practicing violin when I was also trying to do research that interested me more. When I was 13, I published my first paper in a peer-reviewed journal, and about 2 months after that, S. Kalyanaraman came to our home (he and my father were good friends) and stayed with us for a few months while he was doing concerts in that region of the U.S. That short time being with him completely changed my perspective on music and it sparked an interest that continues to this day.
I was fortunate enough to do a few short sessions accompanying him while he was doing a really fascinating 72 melakartha study. The idea was to order them in such a fashion that the difference between one mela and the next was as large as possible throughout the entire sequence. The very idea of even exploring something like that intrigued me. Every single time I hear him sing, it's like I'm learning something new. I am still mind-boggled when I compare his Kshana Madhuna to Santatamu to Koovi Azhaittal and think "How is Valaji this vast?!?!? Where did he find all these corners of this one raga?"
My one memory that still stands out was when we were doing a brisk Kapi demonstration at a family friend's home in Detroit and he was surprised that I managed to catch the sangathi in my follow. He should have been, since I was such an abysmally horrible violinist after all. But I still think back to that and to this day, I can't listen to his rendition of Kapi Madhuripuna without just breaking down in tears. I've lost more friends and colleagues than I can even keep count of by now, but this is one loss that stings forever.

I really admire the way you explain about stalwarts based on your personal interactions and experience with them. It is more of a source of tips and encouragement for young students to emulate. Very nice. Continue this as long as possible, probably even two episodes per week, because I am sure you will be having more and more info.

Thanjavur Kalyanaraman had such a wonderful voice combined with enviable voice dynamics and manodharma which matched that of his more illustrious guru, GNB. It is unfortunate that he wasn't awarded the Sangeetha Kalanidhi. If extraordinarily gifted musicians like T.N.Rajaratnam Pillai, Lalgudi, Pazhani, S.Balachander, Mali, MDR and Thanjavur Kalyanaraman were not deemed qualified for the coveted award, then the Sangeetha Kalanidhi award itself has lost its glory.

An ordinary listner like me goes for only those who are popular - forgive me - mostly of cine fame.
As one grows even as an empty listner like me understands that only strict grammerians give Aathmic satisfaction.
Yet, there is a deficit between the age and maturity. Now I regret joining those missing the youth bus to be contemporaneous.
