  • When we bought my wife's E70 X5M, it already had an AVIN Multimedia Navigation System in it, which essentially is like an Android tablet that allows you to use modern phone connectivity while retaining the BMW functions. I was a bit skeptical at first, but I felt much better knowing the car came with the original factory screen if I didn't like the AVIN unit. I watched a few videos from other UA-camrs to research the screen and found it was mostly well received.
There were a few teething issues for my wife learning to use it, but once we got use to it, it's been great. It retains all of the stock BMW features like the radio and checking the oil while also adding Apple Car Play and Android Auto. You can also store media on it like music and videos. It doesn't quite get you to the level of the factory system in the F85 X5M, but it's pretty great, especially for the reasonable price of about $500. I will definitely be installing one in my E60 M5.

Is there any way you could share your car display and CAN protocol settings in the factory menu? I have the same unit and I’m having trouble getting the IDrive screen adjusted to the monitor correctly. I’d definitely appreciate it.

For the most part, it has been pretty easy except for just replacing the alternator at 96K miles. Just driveline fluids and two rear air springs after 18 months and 30K miles. I'll make a video about it sometime next year once I have a bit more to talk about.
