  • We witnessed a devastating RV fire on the LTVA in Quartzsite, Arizona today, December 19, 2022. While we hope for news that everyone was able to safely evacuate the RV, the condition of the rig by the time the fire department had extinguished the blaze is an obvious total loss. Please let me know if you have any information about this fire as I would like to share the news if there is any way the community can help those who lost their RV in this fire.

    As a person who has been in quartzsite for the last four winters I have noticed that alot of full time nomads prefer la posa north campground when they are coming here to work, so as a nomad I hope others are watching this closely so that we can jump in and help these people in their time of need. Thankfully from what I know no one was injured, but as you pointed out Robert if they are full time, everything they own is possibly gone. We are possibly there only support group

    This kind of story is why I became an RV inspector. So many things that need regular checking and maintenance on RVS and some people (myself included) don't know, if they are new or just never got in the habit. Propane systems should be checked periodically for leaks. Propane tanks or cylinders need to be recertification after a period of time. Wire connections can get loose with all the jostling during travels. Smoke, lp and carbon monoxide detectors need to be replaced if they're too old and the smoke detector should be specifically for an RV, not a household one. These are just a few things to be aware of.

      @@remley8877 what an awful incident and obviously really affected you. I didn't know what I needed to know about propane when I first bought my rv and I'm passionate about helping others to learn rv safety. RV inspections are precisely why it's good to find out potential life safety issues.

    Saw this from the north side of town... It's a good reminder for folks to keep a couple fire extinguishers in your rigs, charged and current. It's a good habit to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors every time change. Hope they are able to recover what they lost, especially so close to Christmas. Thanks for posting this!

You mention smoke alarms, but just a reminder, make sure you have a good CO2 alarm, and check it weekly to make sure it's workking. I'm in the University of Utah Hospital righ now with complications from carbon monoxide poisoning. I was well ventilayed, and ALWAYS kept a window open when I was cooking. Run you fans too! I hope it wasn't due to a bad solar installation. I just had a large system installed I found a lot of mistakes and overlooked issues I fixed myself. They are nothing to cut corners on !! Those Lithium batteries have a lot of energy in them if something shorts out or a solar panel isn't fused properly it can burst into flames on the roof! I'm not mentioning any particular companys but the shops I've tried working with don't seem to think fuses on the panels and other safety hardware are important. All RVs are tinder boxes that will go up faster than a blink of an eye!!! Cutting corners on anything in an RV can be disastrous!! I have seen way too many campers go up when I Towed for different city and state police departments in Oregon and Florida . Very rarely is anything left. I hope they are okay they burn so fast. My wife and I just started full time almost everything we own is in our rig. Sure we have insurance but it can't replace people, pets and other things 😔 be careful out there keep ontop of maintenance and if someone works on your rig it doesn't hurt to check their work. One mistake or overlooked thing can end badly. Sorry but this is a sensitive subject for me I've lost everything a few times to things out of my control it's really hard to recover from this. If I can I'll help them anyway I can. I don't know what LTVA this happened in? I was in Parker all day and hanging out with another UA-camr north of here. Let me know if they need anything we will see what we can do.

    With the Van life community expanding in the last few years it is important to get the word out there about fire safety. Many if these rigs are converted by individuals for there own lifestyle. But, safety is not always paramount on there list. Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers should be mandatory. Escape routes are also a consideration. Too many people die because they did not plan ahead.

    Interesting to see that there are relatively few RV fires in the US. It looks like 4200 RV fires over a 2 year period. Out of an estimated 9 million RV's. That's a .0002% chance of having your RV burn (one has to assume higher if you full-time). For a house, there are 358000 fires a year out of an estimated 140 million homes. That's a .002% chance of having a house fire every year. And you know having your home burn down is just as devastating as having your RV burn down, more if your keepsakes are in storage while you are RV'ing. Granted, motorhomes are more likely to be a total loss than a home, because it's comparable to losing one or two small rooms of a house so it is fully involved a lot faster. I'm just saying, be safe as far as fire safety goes (smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, etc.) but don't worry about it any more than you do in your stick built home.

    • @terrysandiego
      @terrysandiego Рік тому

      There are many RV fires. MOST ARE NOT REPORTED. Our luxury coach fire did not even make the local newspaper in Woodburn, Oregon. The firemen said there had been four in that area that week. The ceiling turns into a broiler real fast. Huge damage is not always obvious unless you can look inside. You definitely don't want to be inside. Our fire was the four-door Norcold absorption fridge in 2011. There are some places where RVs go to die. Looking around will illustrate the many fires that were involved. There is at least one UA-cam video of such a place. Check it out.

    • @brianvandy4002
      @brianvandy4002 Рік тому +1

      @@terrysandiego The study I found indicated when stationary the fridge is most likely the cause of a fire, and it's not when using propane, but electricity. Absorption fridges like used in most RV's are inherently dangerous. It doesn't matter if it is in use, with propane, while driving or not, they're just a horrible idea. That said, you are still 10 times more likely to have a fire in a home than in an RV. To me, that doesn't tell me that having propane in the RV is inherently dangerous. Considering what RV's go through, I'm rather impressed that the numbers aren't much worse.

    • @terrysandiego
      @terrysandiego Рік тому +2

      @@brianvandy4002 Exactly, Brian. Our's was stationary and on electricity with the propane shut off. The coils leaked down onto the wiring below, shorting out the system and igniting. We know this because we were only six minutes from a fire station. Otherwise, the fire would have had longer to burn and it would have been harder to prove the cause. If there really are fewer RV fires now, which I cannot believe, it is because there now are options to order RVs with different types of fridges if they don't already come with compressor or electric-only fridges. RV-size Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, etc., are now available for you to purchase and install yourself. Even Norcold and Dometic appear to be offering alternatives to the absorption type. I started encouraging getting absorption fridges out of RVs in 2012 and continue to this day. Meantime, keep large extinguishers in front and in back and practice getting out those too-small "exit" windows in the back. Note that the ceiling turns into a broiler immediately. You will have about half a minute before the fumes get you, and try not to land on your head when exiting the rear windows. 🙂

      I swapped my Dometic out for an apartment sized Frigidaire because of the fire risks associated with the absorption fridges. I run my new one on Solar and lithium batteries and it just sips the power, plus it's bigger inside although it fits the space that my old 8 cu ft Dometic was in. So sad they lost their RV in the desert and freezing temps. It looks like an old Winnabago with the dual axel rear end, made in the late 80's/early 90's so it's got some age on it.

    Live in Phoenix since the 80's made a lot of trips over to CA once I saw a big class A on fire side of I-10 just east of Ehrenberg AZ with 2 elderly people standing there off to the side watching it go up. I pulled over asked if they were okay and told them to jump in my pickup we backed up 100 more yards because I was worried they were way to close. Then a trucker I hadn't seen who pulled over in the center of the highway he came running up with a tiny bottle extinguisher maybe 20 lb one I honked at him he let the bottle go on it didn't even make a dent. I wanted him to get back not worth a life propane tanks will explode which these did we were way back 500 feet or more like a fireballs went 100 feet up.. They told me what happened she was cooking while driving he went over a bump something bacon grease caught fire before she could do anything it already climbing the wall. All they could do was pull over and get out. I always worry about if our dogs were in our motorhome while we are gone and it goes up in flames. Fire engine finally got there took so long just see the frame and engine.

    There was another fire today, just one day later. This one appears to be in LaPosa south, but south of yesterday's fire. Possible injuries because I saw an ambulance heading that way. I have no other information, this is all based on what I could see.

I'm thinking WHY?!?!?!? out of all the items to be "in your way" THAT is the ONE item that should be within reach!! I watch these videos screaming at the screen RETHINK YOUR PRIORITIES!!!!

    They're way less RV fires and there are house fires. There's tons of thousands of RVs out there every year and maybe one or two fires so those odds are pretty good.

    I'm amused reading all of the speculations and assumptions. Blame Dometic, blame space heaters, blame lithium batteries. The RV was unoccupied at the time, and the fire was due to a fuel leak in the engine compartment. Sorry to let y'all down.

    Maybe you could do a video on how to use a fire extinguisher properly. Just an idea. There is a technique to it and depending on what type of fire it is there are different ways to extinguish it. Different types of extiguishers too. ( I had years of industrial fire brigade training).

    • @RobertWitham
      @RobertWitham  Рік тому

      That would be a great video! My guess is that most people have never need to use a fire extinguisher, let alone tried to put out a fire using one. I'm sure that would be helpful.

    Be so so careful to make sure you're u have no propane leaks.! I had a rig burn down to the ground and had propane to blame.."a leak" I fought the blaze but lost.ended up in burn ward ! The shock of losing everything you needed, housing etc took a year to come out of the fog !!! Jesus had other plans for me. I pray the s woman is ok and sheltered !

      I'm a certified RV inspector. There is a way to test for propane leaks. If one is detected it would need to be repaired by a certified propane repair person. I wonder how many RVer's know how to do the test or even know about it?

    Copious black smoke means lot of vinyl or foam furnishings burning at less than optimal temp. (low energy, therefore not too fast to escape, ie not an explosion of a fuel or gas tank, perhaps a candle or cigarette or cooking oil flash fire?) Get a fire extinguisher blanket to help cut oxygen to douse flames

    As a camp host (Fulltime RVer) for BLM in the Eastern Sierras, I've heard a number of stories of pack rats building nests inside engine compartments and when the RV owner starts the engine, eventually these nests catch fire often burning the RV to the ground. Don't know if this is in anyway involved, but most RVers
    lift their engine lid which (supposedly) keeps these critters away...

    We all need to start putting fire proof safes in our rigs so we can keep our important documents like our bank account info, IDs when we go to bed in case this occurs at night and we run out in our BVDs (sorry ladies) etc.
    We can all find a spot in our rigs to bolt down a small safe out of sight.

    • @RobertWitham
      @RobertWitham  Рік тому +1

      This is an important point. I didn’t even think about mentioning it in the video, but that sort of thing will pay off in a big way in case of a fire.

    From a firemens input. If all rigs no matter the size carries a large fire extinquisers to help others near by and yourself. THE tip of day. Buy a small square lunch box and always but keys, wallet, papers in it every night next to you. I see keys in doorway entrance, I see wallets in pants or jackets..too much time to egress. And a crow bar to break a window if not near breakout egress window.
