The LTVAs are good for people who like the desert, like solitude and want to enjoy it inexpensively. People also firm groups that travel together and camp together. We call them caravans.

Fyi I have a 35' toyhauler. We installed just 250 watts solar some years ago. Works awesome. We also have a 200 watt Honda gen that we use .mainly for really cold climates because heater is a killer. Just bought a radiant gas heater, no
electricity for fan. Switched TV to DC. Run fridge on gas when boondocking. We have a 5000watt Onan which use only for aircond. Use 4 Marine batts and we stay off grid for up to 3 weeks. Point is for people one can set up first boondocking pretty reasonable.
Yep, you don't need much to try boondocking. It is best to keep it simple to make sure you like it before investing. We now have a substantial off grid set up in our current RV (no longer have the one you saw in this video). That area is also where the snow birds ( retired people from the north ) go to get away from the cold and snow. Also in that area is where the RTR ( rubber tramp rondavue ) is held in January.
Yes, Quartzsite is one of many popular snowbird locations for RVer. Generally warm and dry in the winter months. Many groups (not just RTR) hold events there in winter months. -M
Never heard of Quartzsite until I flew down to buy an RV from there.
My son and I flew down and drove it back to Wisconsin in August . Very different place than what I'm used to.
It was 114* hottest temp I've ever experienced.

Great to hear that Jody! Yes if it wasn't for the social catch up with other RVers Q itself is pretty underwhelming, but the free boondocking all around is pretty cool, even if you are not with a group and want some solitude.
We've lived in Yuma 25+ years......drive THROUGH Quartzite often going to other destinations and just recent purchased a toyhauler trailer. Sounds like we'll STILL be driving through Quartzite......really good video!

This is one of the best Quartzite reviews I've seen. It's one of those places I'll put on the must see list.....just not at the top of that list! The drone footage was nice. It gave a nice perspective of how much space you had between your rig and other. Good to know you weren't packed in so close that you lost all privacy which I've heard happens at the Albuquerque Balloon Festival. I think this is one of your best videos!

Yes we were a bit concerned ! would be super packed with all the thousands of RVers but there is SO much space that you can still stake out your little area without being crammed at all, the drone footage does give a great perspective of that. ABQ they pack em in but it is in the middle of a sizable city after all...

Enjoyed your Quartzite video. It does sound like more of a meet and gathering get together than anything else but as you said the weather wasn't ideal this year. I always enjoy seeing different parts of our country.
Yes, we have been to Quartzsite many times, with better weather. It is mostly about meeting up with others if you go during the main show, but it is a pretty good boondocking location for quiet when the show is not going on.

I think this was a fair assessment. I had to laugh when you said you didn't drive the mini to the Desert Bar. I did drive my mini and it was funny to see my little red mini parked next to all the large trucks and SUVs. Rochelle
Hi Rochelle! OMG you did!? That is hilarious! We have put our poor little MINI through so much! When we had the chance to jump in a Jeep with our friends we jumped at it! Just glad you didn't damage yours - or did you!? Hope you took a photo of your MINI by the trucks... I am sure many others did.
Mark and Julie ... Enjoyed your review of Quartzite. This last year we are the Balloon Fiesta and while that is clearly something to see, you are again weather dependent. You need to plan to stay the whole week in order to make sure you have good weather at least one day. Anyway thanks for the review and safe travels.
Absolutely Tom, I think we actually mentioned that in our Video with Tips for the Balloon Fiesta - we stayed 8-9 days and are so glad we did, anyone planning a 1-2 or even 3 day visit is taking a big risk that the balloons may be canceled due to weather.

The camel was named Pinky. She was from the Camel Farm in Yuma, Az. The handler was my son Tony Lete" and another handler was my Grandson Tearin Lete. Tony sends his love.
I have a few comments that may be helpful to understand the often complex issues with cell phone capacity in the Quartzsite area during the months of January and February. I work in the telecommunications industry and also own an RV. Areas such as Quartzsite and other rural areas where 'snowbirds' and other RV travelers descend at different months of the year put a huge strain on wireless broadband service, as is evident to any one who has tried to watch a Netflix video in their RV while boondocking in the wilderness.
For most of the year such areas are sleepy towns, but events occur at times of the year that draw tens of thousands of people to a rural area which is often many miles from larger cities. There is insufficient wireless infrastructure to serve this influx of people due to many factors.
One major issue is that since much of the land is government owned, often by BLM (Bureau of Land Management) or the U.S. Forest Service, restrictions are placed on what companies can do in these areas. One of the overarching goals of these government bodies is to preserve the natural environment as much as possible. Very often, this directive comes in stark contrast to the needs and wants of the temporary residents. This restriction often limits the telecommunications companies from installing the cell towers and other facilities on government land.
Additional facilities are needed to serve the area at the times when the populations bulges quickly. The carriers are certainly aware of the congestion on their networks. Finding solutions to the capacity problems are difficult. Sometimes a landowner or farmer may lease out his property for a cell tower.
To reach the few cell towers in such rural areas from the network (called 'backhaul' in the industry), the carriers' solution in many cases is to use microwave antennas to connect to the towers that are mostly on private land in these rural areas. By using microwave to connect to the network, there is limited air wave spectrum to use, so the spectrum is divided among the various carriers. This lack of spectrum limits the amount of broadband service available at times of peak demand.
Fiber optic cable is far superior to microwave in capacity. Fiber cable has nearly limitless capacity since multiple strands of fiber can carry extremely fast bandwidth signals. This is greatly preferable to microwave, but the odds are stacked against it in government owned lands.
These agencies will often not allow the placing of telephone poles or even allow cables to be buried in the ground to reach these areas. But, with no, or very limited ability to place fiber cable, it limits the capacity of the wireless services.
Another factor, even if cables were allowed to be placed, are the great distances to some of these areas. The decision is often a difficult one to choose between competing needs, to either place many miles of fiber facilities to reach these rural areas, only needed for a few months of the year, or place the facilities needed in high growth metropolitan areas.
Newer technologies on the horizon, such as the wireless '5G' service, which are due sometime in 2018, will allow for much smaller antennas, the size of which could be placed on wooden telephone or power poles, instead of on the tall cell towers so easily seen. These antennas would be smaller, and almost unnoticeable, but there would be many more in number. Many small antennas on smaller poles, or buildings would be less intrusive to the environment.
Without fiber cable to reach into rural America, and poles to mount the antennas, it is not likely that wilderness areas will get higher capacity broadband anytime soon.
The best solution, if there is one, is to contact the BLM and U.S. Forest Services authorities and petition for them to change their policies on allowing cell towers, as well as underground and pole-mounted facilities to be placed. Also, the congressmen and senators at the local, and particularly, the federal level should be contacted and be convinced to either pass laws allowing such facilities or for them to put pressure on these government bodies that control how federal lands are used.
If RV'ers could form a group and gain some political clout, and exercise that power to improve communication services to remote areas, it could not only help the RV experience, but it will help society at large become more connected, where ever they choose to be.

I stayed in Quartzsite for almost three months this past winter (2018/2019), and according to friends of mine who have been boondocking there for over 15 years, this was the coldest and wettest it has been. One thing was apparent to me that the desert was turning green, not normal for this part of the world. Living in a large city, I loved the quiet time to read, play guitar and hike.
I didn't run my generator for over 2 months, using 600 watt solar panels tilted towards the sun. Great investment for me.
We were in Florida this past winter (were in Q last year) and from what we saw, we were glad we headed east! It looked really cold and wet and we even saw they got snow in the south west. Crazy. It would, however, be pretty amazing to see the desert turning green. It's a nice quiet area actually, and quite scenic - especially after all the big crowds have left after the show. Glad your solar system worked so great for you! Thanks for sharing!

If you go with a group during "the big tent" time of year it's fun to give it a try. The tent itself is not worth going for - all about the people and dry camping in the middle of almost nowhere!

Some people love it, others hate it. It is simply a matter of what a person wants to do. Yeah, going to have to see the Quartzsite show someday just to see all those people in one place. But you won't get me to go out of my way to see a bunch of balloons. But thanks for the video; in researching the place I too am amazed how cheap the RV parks are there.

It was originally a rock show called the powwow and rock dealers from all over would go there to sell their wears. People come to buy stones findings. Tools for making jewelry , then rvers started to come to attend an rev gathering. I remember buying museum quality amber for really cheap, and they had a trunks for for you to look at. Many sellers from Brazil with amethyst so big you could stand inside it, these were geodes in all sizes. So I was not thrilled with the change to rvers taking over. As many of my friends were sad to see the change.
Yes, I remember Quartzsite being a big rock show. There are still remnants of that history for the town. But from what I understand, Tucson Arizona is the big rock show these days.

I found this video intersting as well. I have read so much on Quartzite but never really understood what it was. To be honest, not sure it would be our cup of tea. I will be curious on your solar upgrade since it sounds like you are opting for some type of portable system. I have the same dual 6 volt battery arrangement in my coach as yours so your upgrade and results will be of great interest. Got to love the drone shots, I have been researching those as well and have narrowed it down to a couple.

I get it with solar. I mostly boondock hunting and solar is a big plus. But per dollar? Honda gen! Runs everything. Went through quartzite in the summer. Hook ups!

How long is your rig? Do you find that larger class A's can't do the boondocking as well as the super C's?
This RV is a 36' Gas Class A, which had much higher ground clearance than our current 40' diesel pusher, so the RV shown didn't have near as many challenges as our current coach. But that said, most Super C's will have better clearance still. -M
The only reason we turn our TV on is to watch UA-cam on our Roku! What do you guys do for entertainment? Do you read? Enjoy the outdoors? I don't think you talk a lot about your R&R time. Would love to know.
HI Julie, Well, we still work - and also produce content for RVLove.com and UA-cam videos - that all takes quite a bit of time... our R&R involves biking, hiking, exploring the areas we're visiting, going out for dinner, taking scenic drives in the MINI... we probably don't talk about it so much as from the videos we figure people can see what we're actually doing. I hardly ever have time to read anymore... Marc loves to gout for long bike rides, socializing with people we meet on the road takes up a lot more time than it used to in our old life as we meet so many... and sometimes, we just like to relax at our site/in the RV and just chill and not do much at all - but we don't get to do that very often either... creating the RVLove content and managing our social media channels takes up a few hours (or more) most days. use to drive big trucks through the area,summer is best no one around in a big truck,winter you may as well be in downtown L A at rush hour,coming down from the north the RV,ers just pull right in front of you and drive 20 mph under the speed limit so be carefull in a 80,000 lb truck
Yes, with tens of thousands of RVs in that area in the winter, it certainly clogs up the roads.
We are TTN members to love the parks...
Saves a ton doesn't it? A must have for full-timers in our opinion, even if you only use it a month or two a year, we hope to use it even more in 2017 now we are back in the west

We carried our tandem bike for over three years and enjoyed it. We carried it on a ladder bike rack on the back of the motorhome. Bike was stored vertically so it wasn't too wide. The downside of transporting bikes on the ladder rack is that it limits access to the roof, and can be a big lift with a heavy tandem. We have gone back to his and hers bikes. I have a Specialized Sequoia, and Julie has a folding electric bike by Blix. We love both our bikes. We have a great video about her new Blix bike on our road gear reviews channel. Hi there! Welcome! Glad you like the videos. There is a TON of camping around Quartzsite and you could likely find somewhere to camp near enough to walk... the town isn't very big. It really comes down to how close you can park... and how much / how far you like to walk! But Q does get very busy and the place starts filling up closer to the Big Tent Show... meaning... the later in January you arrive, the farther out you will likely have to go to find camping. But there is a LOT of space to camp... the Big tent show, yes... it's a bit disappointing in terms of RV products - there is a lot of home shopping network type stuff. Hope that helps!

You only have Verizon service? I have Verizon and Cricket (AT&T). Usualy if one isn't woring, the other is. Verizon is great for Northern Kansas and much of Colorado, as Cricket doesn't work for me there.
For most of our travels, we had Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, but sometimes we travel with only two of the three. -M
After the 14 day stay legal how far would u have to move and how long before u could go back?
Not sure of the rule about how far you would need to move, but don't believe it is very strict. I think it would be good to move a couple miles, if for nothing else, just to mix up the views.

We filmed it just in between Ajo and Why in AZ. Ours is a Tiffin 2012 Allegro OPen road gas - if you are asking our opinion... then that is a WAY bigger discussion than we can write here - SO many things to consider, not least of all your budget and how to plan to use it, what's most important to you etc.

You totally missed the Quartzsite gem and mineral show.
Vendors come from all over the world bringing raw(to be cut) and slabbed stone and semi-precious minerals. Tourquise, opal, malachite, jade, tiger's eye, agate of a thousand different stripes, petrified wood, jaspers, ammonite, labradorite, petrified coral, turitella, amethyst, quartz, you name it - - - every stone that can be cut, shaped, polished, and set into silver or gold -
Desert Gardens, Tyson Wells -huge outdoor markets -Gem World, T Rocks -
Jan 1 through Feb, though by mid-Feb, most vendors have left for the big Tucson show. Some like T Rocks are open year round.
That you could do an "about Quartzsite" video and be unaware of the gem markets beggars disbelief.
We are aware that the gem and mineral markets in Quartzsite used to be one of the biggest shows in the country, but less so now. We also know that the main gem and mineral markets that still exist there are still a significant draw, but that they have peak seasons and are not a year round thing. And that our RV audience may or may not be interested in gems and minerals at all. So our focus was on the town in general. But we are glad to hear that you enjoy the gem show so much, and appreciate you sharing your interest with others in the comments in case other readers are interested in that as well. -M

And Lithium battery upgrade on house batteries would be good.. Lightweight etc.. Hmm but definitely not cheap!

Hi Steve - yes the roof does have room for solar panels BUT you may have heard us mention we have weight limitations with our coach - we cannot add any extra weight, which would be required for panels, charge controller and especially batteries... we recently picked up a portable solar suitcase (reviewing/sharing that soon) which is enough for our needs and is lightweight enough to justify bringing on board. We won't take our RV over legal, safe weight limit just for the benefit of enjoying solar. I don't know if other people consider their legal/safe weight of their RV setup when adding extra items - it may not be an issue for many, but with a 22K chassis and right on it (over if we fill all our tanks) we just can't do it - definitely a bigger consideration with our next coach!
Yep and Lithium Batteries are much lighter than traditional deep cycle batteries used in coaches.

As much as we love our coach, we feel this was a factory oversight - the chassis should have been bigger for what it carries - we regularly strip back and offload, so many empty bays and cupboards - we have the space capacity but not the weight capacity. The 2013 (ours is 2012) is 24K and i think the newer ones are 26L where ours is 22k pound chassis. It's the ONE thing we really wish we could change and the biggest downfall of our rig... but we are probably also more mindful of doing the right thing re weight in our coach than most... some have no idea and/or don't care! And that is just plain dangerous for everyone.

Visit the RV FURNITURE tent at the midway southwest side of the big tent. Its got to be at least a 60ft tent full of at least 20 pieces of different furniture to try out along with flooring samples, MCD shades and cabinets. I purchased a Lambright reclining loveseat from them a few years ago to replace the horribly uncomfortable hide-a-bed in my 2016 Redwood 5th wheel. I couldn't believe all the different sizes, orientations and colors they had instock at the show! The gentlemen at Countryside Interiors answered all my questions, even the ones i didnt know i had They even delivered it to my campsite at Tyson Wash that evening, took the old sofa out and sat it in for free (i dont know if its always free but this was the most expensive loveseat they offered). We don't think the town has much to offer, but we still have enjoyed many many weeks of boondocking in the area. It is hard to beat that region for winter boondocking. And yes, we have heard slab city is pretty un-inspiring. But... unlike Quartzsite, which we hear mixed feelings about, I don't remember ever hearing anybody speak favorably about slab city -M

The Freedom Theory spent quite a bit of time in Alaska boondocking and they don't have solar. Thank you so much! loved the tandem bike riding - but Julie should be in front so she can see!

I agree... the BIG TENT was a BIG LET-DOWN. I got there early to get a good parking space anticipating buying lots of stuff... and walked away almost empty. I do much better on Amazon and eBay.

I found some good deals in Quartzsite on RV items at Gambler's RV. They have surplus, overstock, and excess inventory as well as used items in the back tent, and new items in front. Even found a latch for my RV fridge door that is almost unobtainium elsewhere.

Spent 9 weeks in Q this year and the weather sucked, so that made it not as enjoyable as before. Bummed I missed Aussie Day, I fell asleep 😢😖 I tried Vegemite in Darwin back in the 80's while I was in the Navy on a Submarine. That stuff is nasty 😖 See you next time...

I know - the weather was really a shame, so unusual. You would be surprised how many people tried Vegemite and actually LIKED it this time - the secret is, fresh white bread, a good slather of butter, not too much vegemite and made with love by an Aussie :)

this is off topic but i want to throw it out here cause i know you kids are in the know. we are going to balloon fiesta in october and want to know if we can bring our dog to the balloon fiesta campground, i've emailed the balloon fiesta people and the escapers but no one has gotten back to me. do you know the answer?
Hi there - no I am pretty sure you can't take dogs into the balloon fiesta grounds. Not sure if service dogs are excepted? Here's what we would suggest - attend the fiesta with a rally group like Escapees or an owners group, no doubt others will have dogs too and consider making arrangements to take turns to dog sit while the others go check out the fiesta. The fiesta campground is a very short 5 min shuttle ride from the grounds so you wouldn't have to leave your dog/s for long... the fiesta has morning sessions approx 4am-10am and afternoon sessions approx 3 - 9 ish I believe (guesstimate those times)
My question is if you can have your dog in your rv at the balloon festival campground, he is fine in the rv when we leave for a few hours. Thanks for your prompt response.
I just wanted to follow up, I just registered today with the escapees for the balloon fiesta (which is now sold out, can you believe I got the last reservation), and I can tell you that pets are welcome in the campground. Woo Hooooo
