    I mean obviously if you are prone to this- use something like Kerasal ointment.
    Kerasal (urea/salicylic acid/glicerin/vaseline) amzn.to/3dy31F7
    It’s moisturising and exfoliating (and anti inflammatory)
    This helps if you have a resistant piece but definitely try to prevent it

      I wish you a successful recovery. 💜
      I don’t have the same severity of condition, but I do have skin picking tendencies with my generalized anxiety disorder and my fingertips and nails get the brunt. I’m always rubbing my fingers and nails and any bit of roughness leads me to start picking (I’ve fortunately recovered from biting). I still haven’t shaken the habit of digging, picking, and peeling off chipped polish but staying on top of hand skin care really helps reduce my skin picking.

    Thanks for this video! I actually needed to know how to deal with this issue. I was nipping them off with nippers. Since I’ve been gently filing them (I like the pointy end of the glass “cuticle” pusher to really file in a targeted way) they’ve been so much better! I’m a bit hit or miss on being consistent with oil treatment but my nails look so much better since finding your channel!

    Thank you for this, I have naturally flared flat nails that point down so I ALWAYS have these! I have been filing but also using my nippers to get rid of them all but they grow back even faster (I’ll do my manicure and three days later, they are coming back!) like you say I really believe they are basically calluses, and like on the bottom of the foot, if you get rid of them completely they come back even faster. They are the bodies way of trying to protect itself from pressure. Best way is just to smooth them down now I think

    On Easter Sunday I removed my acrylic nails because some of them seemed to be developing a fungal infection. I have been having acrylic nails for many years with no problem until I changed salons at the beginning of the year and this happened. I have decided to give up acrylics and have religiously been applying jojoba oil to my nails twice a day and then applying OPI Nail Envy Original Strengthener. On watching your videos I have learned so much. I am now commencing the weekly warm soak with jojoba, applying the Nail Envy but not including the cuticle so that I can apply the jojoba oil to them and hand cream every time I wash my hands. They are definitely improving and I’m sure with this treatment once the damaged top half of the nail grows out they will be so much better. Thank you so much for your advice.

  • @aquariaaustin2077

    You. Are. A. Life. Saver. This is my exact problem. The skin in that area builds up so much that I get "pads" of them that get so huge the light shines through them. They get tough no matter how much oil I use on them, or how much moisturizer I use on my hands. Then they inevitably crack and cause hangnails.
    I just filed off the latest monster growth, and now the area is smooth and neat. WIll see how that affects the skin not cracking there after this.

    Yes, I have learned to do this… It works so much better than cuticle nippers. I was a cosmetologist for 25 years so I know a thing or two about nail care :-) however, I have been severely picking my cuticles since I was about four years old. The only thing that ever helped me stop, Was wearing artificial nails. Which I don’t do anymore for health reasons. So, I’m back to the severe picking. I do what I can to mitigate it, but sometimes it gets really bad. There’s not a product in this world that can make it better… I really just have to consciously pamper my hands. But get me an unconscious or nervous situation of worry or excitement, and the damage Ensues! I just subscribed to your channel hoping to have constant reminders to consciously care for my hands :-)

    I get these all the time at short nail lengths because of the way my fingers are shaped (nails curve right into my fingers, almost like an ingrown toenail does). So painful and uncomfortable. For this reason I avoid square-shaped nails and always start filing a rounded curve on the corner from the point my nail detaches from the finger at the sidewalls. But I wonder if that is making it worse in the longterm like it can with toenails?
    Anyway, I use nippers only if there’s a piece of hard skin sticking off, then inadvertently smooth out some of the crusty part with a glass file as I round the corners, but mainly it’s that I apply cuticle cream, oil, and nailcare lotion and massage them in well. Started this solutional/maintenance routine after bingeing your videos. And when I use the nippers on hangnails near my sidewalls (which I also get frequently for the same reason), I try to only nip off the part that’s already detached. Your warning voice is in the back of my head every time. 😂

      Place the brush in the middle of the nail and reverse it back towards the cuticle. It allows me to get much closer to the cuticle in a neat way than trying to place the brush near the cuticle and then pulling it up the nail.

    I have had dry, hard skin around my nail for years and I began using a coarse nail file to file down. The Kerasal is safe to use around fingernails?

    I used a nail file to smooth it out but it got raw and hurt for days. What grit do you use? I know the term "grit" from sandpaper which is what my nail file is just mounted on cardboard.

    Thanks for the good info! Curious if you think this could be done with an e file. Maybe best to use a hand file for precision?

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  Рік тому +1

      Hi Anne! Yes for sure e-file too but many DIYers watch these videos and they need help too. I don’t recommend DIYers using e-files because they can cause more damage than good.
      E-file used correctly actually would be more precise. You can see how I use e-file in many of my watch me work videos :)

    I had the dip nails for several years; have been trying to grow my own for over a year. What I find is that the area around most of my nails suddenly appear with a thick hang nail (for lack of better word). The nail won’t grow at all if not removed…. I have been using oils and cuticle cream but it comes back again and again. Someone here said use Kerasal….but tHat burns the skin. Any ideas?

    I have a huge chunk of extremely rough skin on the side of my nail. I have had it for almost 5 years now. I can file it down some, but not much without it bleeding. I'm still left with a nasty looking chunk of dried skin. The nail has also a bit lifted in that area. So do I just keep filing and applying oil or there a different approach because the skin is so hard and thick?

    Can I use an e-file ? With the rounded bit ? Or will that make it worse ?

    • @TheSalonLife
      @TheSalonLife  Місяць тому +1

      I don't recommend using e-file unless you are a nail technician specifically trained in using one. You can cause more damage than good.
      This simple swipe and more importantly regular skin care will take care of these without the need for e-file.

    The more you rub the more you will have to. Even with that file. It will get worse. Looks good when you first do it, but in a day or two it will be back and here you go again. Until it gets thicker and thicker. Yes it's a callus. Treat it like one.

      This is just to remove the little hard pieces. You have to take care of your skin. Here is a very easy routine I have

      Have you tried Kerasal? A tiny dab at night, before bedtime. It has wonderful ingredients. Vaseline (occlusive), glycerine (moisturising), urea (moisturising and mild exfoliant) and salicylic acid (anti inflammatory and exfoliant)
