Don't feel bad. I went to Juilliard as a scholarship student for six years and studied film scoring in a high level university program in LA. I've never made a dime from music for 30 YEARS, except for a few peanuts years ago teaching some private lessons. I am almost 50 but never owned a car, house, or any major asset. I have owned one dress shirt for the past 10 years with the rest of my wardrobe being plain t shirts with two pairs of running pants and a pair of shorts. Other than my primary instrument, I own no music gear, not even a keyboard.
There are a lot of scum involved in the industry that unfairly block people out as much as they possibly can. I have seen it happen to my close friends as well. Anyone who wants to get into the music industry needs their fucking head examined because they never listen to the guys who were actually in the trenches.

I too was black balled in the industry cause a bitch with power wanted me but I didn't want her so...BUT...I have made this my living for the past 40 years and I'm so happy cause I'm doing what I love. The business ain't easy but you can make a bit of money if you market right, get a decent crew of talented people around you and keep your skills sharp.

Very nice work. My only thought was why the electrical outlets were installed upside down with the ground on the top instead of the bottom. But I suppose there’s no right or wrong way and maybe that’s your preference. I’ve always seen the ground on the bottom. Amazing work though man.

So, I was doing the boring work of building out my CRM for a shift in my studio business and my choices were, binge watch a tv show, gaming or sleeping. Man, listen. When your video popped up on my recommended watch list (yes I subscribed and hit the bell), my interest was piqued and brother... The best 35:07 of my professional life! My new mindset this year was to watch or do something that I'd learn something from and my head hurts from how much I learned. Thanks for sharing this video and the extra info in the description. How come you didn't do measurements before you decided what materials to use? Mineral wool is horrible. It wasn't designed for room treatment, it doesn't do squat in the low frequencies.
Also, what's your room dimensions?
As far as low frequency absorption, for 100hz and lower you need pressure activated devices and you need LOTS of coverage since low frequency issues in any small room is going to be everywhere since low frequencies are omni directional. And you need two different types of devices. Tuned for the locations where there are modal issues and broadband in between. And you need a LOT of them. Diaphramatic are considered the best and most effective, just using limp mass will NOT go after the low frequencies, especially in the 50hz and lower. Also, quadratic diffusion will help make your room sound bigger without nasty reverberations/slap back echo.
Also, mineral wool is highly toxic, wasn't designed for room treatment and it's commonly used because it's cheap, but it's not the best for absorption, especially between 125hz and 500hz. It tends to over absorb in that range.
I'm not trying to rain on your parade, I'm just trying to pass on some good information that I've learned from others that actually have designed, built high end rooms that have also done extensive R&D into room treatment and various materials commonly used and development of better products that are available.
Also, you need a respirator when dealing with that mineral wool crap and covering it with fabric isn't going to prevent toxic particles becoming airborne.
Oneness100 I talked extensively about the dimensions in the video. It’s no more or less toxic than 703, or 705. This is 8 pound density mineral wool, and when you look at the actual numbers it basically mimics 705 in performance. Thanks for your comment though.
@@ColtCapperrune I wouldn't use ANY building insulation for room treatment. Mineral wool, corning 700 series, etc. is all toxic and none of it is actually designed for acoustic treatment for music and speech. It was designed for insulation for wall construction where it's hidden and contained in between the walls. But it's highly toxic stuff and respirators, gloves, etc. should be worn when handling it, otherwise you are breathing in tiny particles that are not organic that can cause lung diseases. Fabric isn't enough to contain those toxic particles from becoming airborne. I hope you have some pretty intense Hospital grade Hepa Filtration on the list to add to the room if you decide to keep it.
I've used 703 and it's just as bad. It over absorbs in that 125hz to 500hz and it doesn't make the room sound natural. Obviously, you are using near field monitors and you have plenty of room between the speakers and each wall, which is good. But for tracking instruments? That's a different story. It seems like you are trying to make one room do it all and it isn't going to do everything well.
Have you gone around the room and done sine wave measurements to see where the room modes are?
Measure 20hz to 100hz in 10 hz increments about every 2 to 3 feet around the perimeter of the room. You should see differences and where there is a higher amplitude of different frequencies, that's where the room modes are and at what frequency and how much of an issue you have. 24ft by 26ft is almost a square, which are typically bad room dimensions. But you have those slanted walls, which change reflections. Have you done any RT60 measurements?
I stay away from building insulation as room treatment. It was never designed for that application. The problem is the industry has accepted it because it's cheap and until recently, that's all that was available and I understand why people use it, but there are acoustic foams available that do have a much smoother absorption coefficient curve, especially in that 125hz to 500hz and it makes a HUGE difference, especially with lots of coverage.
For low frequencies, diaphragmatic absorption is the best. There's a company that makes the best stuff on the market and they even sell their designs to make your own, so you can save money and you just buy their activated carbon filters which go inside the cabinet which are specifically designed for low frequency absorption that will go after the 30hz to 50hz range and they are more effective than anything else on the market. I suggest checking them out, especially if you are going to track instruments in that same room..
I would also consult with that company, which is free by the way, and they will give you the best strategy for improving the room for the various applications that you are using it for. A control room is one application, tracking vocals is another, tracking instruments is another. Each should be considered in the acoustic treatment strategy.

To your point, starting out with the right space is key. When investing all that time and money you want be sure you are working with a good location that will make it all worth the effort. I admire your tenacity, and attention to detail. This was no small task from design to finish, for someone to do primarily on their own. Great job!

Oh man, don’t mess with the booth. I bet you could do other things with the space that would add a more unique sonic signature to your portfolio. But I guess that depends on preference, and what you’re tracking there. If it’s just vocals and overdubs...
Fabricate movable gobos that are taller (6ft) and clamp down with those to control the room ambience. Tony Maserati has a good video on the MWTM platform that touches on reasons for not doing vocals in a booth, and I agree with him. I like a little ambience in the vocal, and booths just sound so...lifeless. Even the iso rooms at Blackbird don’t feel like booths, right? I guess it depends on how big your booth would be, etc. Excited to see the next phase, and how it carries into the work. ✋🏻
After countless days and hours of trying to figure out how to reduce reverberation in my bungalow’s 1950 attic space with knee wall set ups and existing drywall installation I finally figured out how to solve the issue thanks to you man! My neighbors can hear us every time we make sound impact sounds such as dropping objects or hitting the wall and I was literally losing my mind. You are a life saver. Much appreciated!!

its directly behind the monitors, which usually needs very minor sound treatment, if any. considering most of the rest of the room is covered i doubt it makes as much of a difference and having the natural light is lw cool.
I was just looking to see if anyone else saw this......the window wont hurt him until he fires a mic up and a car goes by..lol..the rock wool is for acoustics but helps with isolation much better than insulation...
