Excellent info. I started running my studio as a business just short of 2 years ago. Truth be told, I'm an , older guy. I've been into recording for a long time but got serious 10ish years ago. I punched out of my 20+ year IT career late last summer. Saved a lot of money, so everything in my studio is bought and paid for, nothing on credit. I'm lucky and have a wife that is supportive and still working. Anyway, it's slow going right now (working on two projects) but I'm gonna keep pushing to get more clients. Your point of "constantly learning" is really the key -- it never stops and like you said. Doesn't matter the era, style, musical genre, etc -- there are endless resources. Thanks for sharing.

This was a truly inspirational video. I feel many people are in that place where they are on the verge of going full time, and are also on the verge of going into debt to do so. This is a great reminder to take things slow and smart. Also, many of us fall into the trap of not actively listening to new music past a certain age, discounting new gear and techniques, etc. Remembering to stay relevant in an-ever changing music industry is such a great piece of advice. Thank you for affirming such solid values!

95% of my work now is remote OR I go to them in their space, it’s the same with all my producer buddies! So the cost of entry is lower than ever. Great video man, lots of good stuff here!

Don't underestimate the power of having a strong network of people that even WANT to record.

I saw the writing on the wall early, I did not enter the recording studio business because late nights, and the chop-change hours/flexibility you need to have for artists schedule wise was something that did not connect well with myself.

This societal framework we’re stuck in, where success is measured by how much money you make, is absurd. Think about it: we’re like scientists with our deep understanding of audio. We manipulate sound to create something artistically satisfying-that should be your main gauge of success and bring the greatest sense of achievement. I’ve been in this game for a while, collaborating with numerous artists and making some cash, but that’s not what I’ll look back on with pride. As a dad and an artist who’s tuned in, I get more thrill from having read the entire UAD plugins manual last week than from landing a new client. But hey, that’s just me.

Your Neve 1073’s are great sounding. You bought them at a good price and have appreciated. But how likely are you to sell them….Ever?

"discounting where the industry is going"
Something I struggle with is how the "professional sound" is quantized drums and autotuned vocals. We've done the sonic equivalent of photoshopping ourselves in a corner.

11:11 Do you have a whole video just on the different conventions/expectations around deliverables? Ooh, also maybe the front end of how best to ask for how we want to RECEIVE files? O:) lol
Thanks for all you do! Really wanting to take the time to dig in to your channel more and dig in more to the output *I* need to be making as well! Hashtag inspo ;) Thanks again!

@@RecordingStudioLoser i’m watching your video right now dude, I love your stuff! We probably have ran around some of the same caricatures in Indiana possibly maybe not? One of my best friends was from Marion back when I lived in Broadripple. But go check out my music coming up dude! I’m solely working for Jesus now and I got over 100,000 streams in the first couple months… I just heard what you said about waiting for the right gear… You’re absolutely right it’s a hard investment my brother is in Nashville… He owns a Studio with Michael McDonald… but we were talking about investing in the right equipment because you just are putting your money in a safe place. Why was I so compelled to reach out to you? Why do we as engineers and artist reach out? It’s a mystery. 🙏🏼
