I was there that night and when he started talking about a song he thought they never played live before, I leaned over to my buddy and said, "What if they played Dyer's Eve?!" When they kicked into it, I flipped my shit.
That had to be absolutely FUCKING AMAZING
That's sick! Never seen Metallica live
Christian Dinero same :((
I would have lost my fucking mind
and we all hate you for that ¿)
Imagine this song being played in Seattle 1989.
You realize that tour was not just played in Seatle....lol
@@johnnyutah482 It's hilarious that people act as if Seattle '89 was the only gig on that tour. Great show? Yes, but so was pretty much every other gig that Metallica played on that tour.
@@johnnyutah482 and @Jason M well, because that show is the definitive Metallica concert!
Jason M its just because it was one of the only professionally recorded
Saw them twice that tour....and yes I understand they recordrd a show from Seatle..
"This is a song we haven't played in 100 years" LOL
That's why he forgot the lyrics...😂
Still relevant
Drunken Skulls I think Hetfield might have had a brain fart and forgot the lyrics
He says that sometimes for shortest straw too lol.
Dyers Eve has to wait 16 years
The ultimate "we should have played this song in the Jason era" song.
I think that goes to frayed ends of sanity, but this is a very close second.
@@vinyl9337 still not the full song, they played it entirely in 2014
As well as To Live Is Too Die, in its entirety.
russkate88 in 2011
@@Wolfoe-ex2jj they did play that in the Jason era, in fact only in 88 and 89
“This is a song we haven’t played in 100 years.”
Technically true.
I don't think you understand what technically means
@@kjl3080.
According to Merriam-Webster: "with regard to or in accordance with a strict or literal interpretation of something (such as a rule, a term, or an official description or designation)"
Metallica didn't exist 100 years ago (nor were any members born yet, past or present), which means James was *_technically_* correct when he said they didn't play this song 100 years ago.
The original comment _will,_ however, become false by 2088.
@@kjl3080 yo we got a legend in the comments
@@TotoDG well shit
@@kjl3080 bro said he mastered the English language on you
Considering how this is one of the most kickass songs of Metallica, it's a crime how rarely they play this live.
I agree. I think they should play it more live even if Lars can't do the DB
Yes, Dyers Eve is an awesome song. It is technically challenging musically and kind of long. So maybe it just got put on the back burner
@@randyrazor6780 its one of their shortest songs.
@@jonny j the average metallica song is 6-7 minutes long just saying. Dyers eve is just over 5 minutes
It's a crime this wasn't played in their prime.
Larsism rule #6 - double bass is optional
daddy
I wouldn't care if they just overdubbed the double bass over the playing, as if he didn't even really play those parts. Would still sound really good
This is the only song where I actually excuse Lars for not playing the double bass exactly like the studio version because it's JUST FREAKING IMPOSSIBLE. This version sounds pretty neat to me.
@@pedroprestes6340 Josh did it ^^^
I`m aware of that but I`m talking about Lars
This happened because of Rob, thanks Rob!
Really?
Yes, he's the one who suggested they should play it.
@@BirdsElopeWithTheSun09 sweet
Yeah he really pushed them to change up the set list on this tour
You're welcome
The riff after the solo is one of the most epic and "headbangers" from them. It's just amazing
That riff and the riff after the master of puppets solo I think are some of the heaviest riffs ever.
@@ricosalvaje5802 definitely! Puppetz post solo riff is the heaviest Metallica riff ever written. It sounds so evil
Agreed I always thought it was one of their best forgotten about riffs.
Hey great avatar right there.. 😂
5:06 I would add the riff after the solo from "The struggle within" from Metallica - The black album" as "one of the most epic and "headbangers" from them. It's just amazing"
How tf did they even convince Lars to play this
Ozan Canca “You don’t have to play both bass pedals”
😂😂
Lars, if you can do drugs you can pull it off, my boiiiiiiiiiiiii!
Coz Lars can do it
Vino BRO 😂😂
I gotta give props to Greg Fidelman for this new audio mix, man. Sounds way better than the standard LiveMetallica soundboards of the time.
Word. Not a fan of his production work, but damn does he know how to get a great sound.
Yea I remember watching this couple years ago and the audio was bad
metfan4l We should be grateful it was Greg who mixed the audio, and not Rick Rubin
Definitely! I can't wait to hear Seattle '89 remixed by Greg Fidelman!
Rick Rubin never mixed anything he's just the guy that sits there and gives advice. I don't even know if he can competently work a mixing board.
Can you imagine how crazy Jason would of been on stage if they had played this live back in the day?
*would’ve
They did
@@muffinandclembunnieshinckl7988 when
@@muffinandclembunnieshinckl7988 this was the first time it was ever played live. What are you talking about?
@@herrcobra4144i think he meant during the black album tour they did a lil jam of dyers eve at a live show, i don’t remember the venue tho
I think James “forgot” the lyrics because of how much this song hits so close to home with him.Probably would’ve been a bit of a pain to sing
Nah probably because this whole song destroys the wrist and singing while playing it would be fuckin ungodly
@@passive_pestilence3025 verses are actually pretty easy though, it's just whole power chord notes, that comes only to chorus and breakdown, and even so, they play Battery and whatnot, which is *much* harder to perform, yet they do
@@maddiethemadovichif you’ve only played a song once I can kinda understand how you’d forget the lyrics
Fixxxer also does that to James. He gets very emotional
I can’t even imagine the feeling of going to Metallica show and suddenly realizing you’re among the first to hear this song live. That’ll stick with you for life.
I’ve been waiting for this video since 2004. This was my first show.
Nice
Seen them in chicago the same year and they ended the show with this song! It was amazing
Was mine too! :D
I was there too
Dude, I remember seeing another video of this same show/song in 2013.
Mad props to James to adlib the parts he forgot. That's how a true professional does it. When I saw them at U.S. Bank stadium in Minneapolis in 2016 they played Leper Messiah and he completely forgot to sing the wichery weakening... part. Then like 5 songs later he goes "I think I forgot to sing a part of Leper Messiah" and they proceeded to do just that part of the song over again. I thought he did it on purpose to let the crowd sing (which I was of course). It was an epic save. I wish I knew how to edit videos and I would paste that part over it so it sounded like he actually sang it. It was still a bad ass amazing show.
I was at this show when I was 11. Holy fuck, it was literally the best night of of my life. I was the only ones out of all my friends to say I got to see Metallica live. Obviously, years later, they’ve all seem ‘em now, too. But that night, with my brother and dad, just three metal heads enjoying a badass show, will forever live in my memory.
gnarly
We played it live in front of Lars and Kirk at the Metallibash in SF in 2001. After the show Lars said "You laid the gauntlet down, now we have to play it." 3 years later, I guess they did!
After being neglected for decades, Kirk nailed the solos. Awesome work.
Haha James is actually the weak link here, wasn't expecting that. Lars and Kirk are right there. Rob, I don't even need to mention, never missed a beat in his entire life. Anyway, this sounds insane 10/10
I never missed Jason Newst... Who?
Sucker
James forgot a lot of words and wasn’t able to play a lot of the riffs when singing. Kirk nailed everything. Rob was killing it it Lars was missing most of the double bass
Rob is tight af
@@alebarajas3045 Lars was great except the double bass
5:56 "Dyers Eve! Ugh, I can't even throw a pick right here, I'm sorry." :D
This Is a incredible song. Why they never play in live
I think Lars has said he can't play it anymore.
Because it's a hard fucking song.
@@Zleek Lars never could play it live.
@@pillsareyummy he clearly played it amazigly well in this video. ik there is no double bass drum but it still fuckin amazing
Aside from being a hard song for everyone, it’s only popular amongst the hardcore fans and the personal lyrics might make James less inclined to play it.
Of all their great songs, this still ranks in the top for me. Such an under appreciated surprise from Justice.
Its the black sheep of the album. Has a very punk/hardcore feel. Is F'ING pissed off.
Probably the most underrated song from AJFA
Semtex 2 no, after eye of the beholder
It’s always been recognized as one of the best from the album, not underrated. NPR played it once!
Eye Of the beholder is the most underrated song from that album. This one is a signature song for this album actually.
@@H.E.M. it's not that long
8 out of 9 songs from an album are underrated, jesus
This song is so freaking hard to play, so I understand that they can’t play it live all the time. And the solo is freaking insane. I’ve tried learning it and it’s insanely hard. But Kirk absolutely nailed this solo. My favorite song from Justice.🤘🏻
Surely it’s no harder to play than battery?
@@richardgreenway8724 miles more difficult
@@richardgreenway8724 dyers eve is way harder than battery in my opinion...even though battery isnt that easy either
As hard on guitar as is on drums, and yeah, Kirk fucking nailed it🤘🏻
@@richardgreenway8724
I get what you’re saying dude, but it’s not even close
Is it me or does Lars kit sound really good?
The mix is good and this live version is a good one for 2000's Metallica.
Javier Di Maio Yeaxh, I know. It's just funny how much hate Lars got for St. Anger and here his kit sounds really good. Makes me wonder what they sounded like overall in that era...
It seems that this recording has been updated with more modern drum sounds that they use today; I doubt it sounded like this back then.
@@viciousviridian6761 Sure was remixed from the original tracks. Sounds well mixed. IMO.
he is just playing louder
How perfect was everything...drums, vocals, the solo...I wish I was there!
Apart from James forgetting the words

Proving everyone they needed his solos after forgetting about him in St. Anger.
I was there that night at The Forum. When James started talking about a song they hadn't played in 100 years, we had no idea what was about to happen. Then Dyers Eve started. We looked at each other and said "Holy $h!t" we couldn't believe it. It gives me chills to watch this video. Thank you for posting this 🤘🏽
Even the camera is happy. See how it was shaken by that intro. Thanks Rob....
This song is underrated - so fast, so raw, so brutal and so awesome - it has to be coming from experience, you can't fake this. One thing that I love about Metallica is that they are so talented and so passionate about the Metal Militia and their craft. I started loving Metal in 1992 when I picked up Justice. As a side note, IE# generational - My daughter is 6 and she really loves Metallica. "James has a nice smile but his voice can be so rough or nice" she says. Shes a little kid, and in kindergarten I guess they learn about fast and slow music. She just calls Metallica's music "really fast". Unrelated - Her favorite songs are Master of Puppets and Disposal Heroes.... So - that's what a VERY new set of ears and eyes thinks is the best work. I can't make this up. I love these guys and I just can't thank them enough for putting out excellent thrash metal since day 1. So many tours, so much effort, so much passion about this art form - and I love it.
This, and Shortest Straw were my two favorite songs on AJFA
Yes shortest straw is incredible ...doesn't get the love it deserves
YES!!!

Reaction???
Chainsaw you still need to check out the To Live is to Die performance on Mark Wood's channel
Chainsaw Reacts are you looking forward to when they upload to live is to die from the Filmore show I'm excited for the audio mix
Was just listening to dyers eve, I didn’t expect this to be uploaded!
That SOLO - JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!! Kirk is a master of the fret board.....LEGEND!
Imo Kirk nailed the Solo
He did a really good job with it
God knows how much effort they've put to fix the sound for this video lol
No doubt. Didn't miss a lick!!
Everyone's pretty great here, but is no one gonna talk about how rob plays the basslines like this with fucking fingers for 2 HR shows?
Kirk WAHmett, legend
another wah fan???
I saw them playing this one In 2009. They also played Holier Than Thou and Leper Messiaj so it was kind of a rare setlist.
I was just like damn this sounds heavy af for their current tone ...and then I realized. Good performance!
Wow, insane, where's the "beyond like" button?
There is not 1 bad riff, line, note, moment, lyric in this song. It is the most metal-y-est song ever written. It is the peak of James Hetfield. It was everything he was hoping his music would say and then he just came right out and said it. This song - the anger and the meaning behind it - is why Metallica exists at all, and why most Metallica songs have ever been written. Think about that.
The best song !
My all-time favorite Metallica song
I will continue to go to metallica shows till i see this song live
Kirk Hammett solo = PERFECTO !! \m/
Yeah he nailed it ! With the wah of course !
After St Anger, he came back with a vengeance
Yeye it is a miracle! He always shit in their own solos hahhaa

Its so sad how this didnt get played for so long. This is basically my favorite song from Metallica, hands down
one of all time favourites
late 2021.... replaying Kirk's solo 100000000 times. this song is timeless.
Surprisingly good audio for such an old clip
So much better when they play the intro live - wish they'd still do it that way
If only they played this during the justice tour. Would have been legendary.
clearly, they hadn't played that song in 100 years coz James forgot the lyrics LOL
Everything is fucked up in this, but STILL I would love to hear this live.
Ramil Javier and Lars is doing a gallop double bass rather than the all out 16 note double.. Still sounds great and Kirk kills it.
Lphixdj agree. Lars got sloppier with playing the verse parts of Dyers Eve during the Death Magnetic tour though.
This song is about James' dead parents.
@@ronik24 No it isn't
The riff after Kirk's solo is damn near perfection
Fracking amazing!
Kirk nailed that solo like a boss 😎
Kirk nailed it maaaan !!
Kirks soooo good
@Tushar Sharma ☺
Kirk absolutely nailed this solo, wow.
After this first time playing it live, they have played it 34 more times in live shows. Amazing!
What were you guys thinking not playing that in your prime?? Anyways, great upload even with wrong lyrics lol. Love you guys till death.
Maybe Lers couldn't play it even then.
@@U.P.up. He couldn't live, because it was too much for him playing 10 songs and this, but he could play it in studio in 1988-1994
They could have done it if they wanted to. Would have been brutal on the justice tour.
@@daveruda Straight facts man, I'd say even up to 91-92.
Just listen to Lars play in Toronto in 1986. He was at his best there and could have easily done Dyers Eve and he still had the chops in '89 so who knows they didn't. The also never played Frayed ends and only played Eye a few times.
1:30 sounds so EPIC!!!
I would’ve flipped my shit if they played this
This sound awesome!! Dyers Eve is my favorite!!
OMFG the pace on this song...freaking insane!

Metallica's best song
We'll probably have to wait another 100 years to see them playing live this again
My favorite song off of justice!!
I was there. Scott Ian was on the floor pre-show talking to fans. Looks like he had the inside scoop on what was about go down. Performance was a little sloppy but that's fine. That's a song for young men.
Thankyou so much Robert Trujillo for suggesting to bring this song that everybody loves to life again, live!
When Metallica posts a new video I instant like it
Loveeeee these old metallica songs.. The best
They *slayed* that! Perfect performance!
Thank you Metallica for this GIFT! Thank you!
Awesome version Guitar and drumwise!
My favorite transition from solo break down from any Metallica song! Love it
This song & lyrics are pure Gold. They should play it every fucking night
They just need to do an AJFA tour again for those of us who were too young to go.

The Double bass os actually not there at all. But it was still a good performance
Love the cam corder recording of this - simple, effective, and f’in awesome
First time played live and I WAS THERE!!!
Back when they used to play the intro, much better than using an intro tape! Spit Out The Bone live intro one day please!
Well, the 'fight fire', 'battery' and 'blackened' intro tapes are just necessary, but yeah spit out the bone & dyers eve tapes are pretty lazy
Yeah right, c'mon they don't even do shortest straw. I wish they'd do spit out the bone
Pauluzz99 hell no. they used to play the intro to fight and it was awesome. I believe they have been using a tape since Cliff died
ColinOrJames Yeah, but Lars can't do it. If you check the tuning room videos before the Spit Out The Bone live debut, you'll see it
