The place is Kedarnath itself, its a Hindu pilgrimage place. Moreover, the floods were also true and were very disastrous.
Visited Kedarnath in May 2013 with my parents. Just a week later we reached our city we came to know about the catastrophe from TV. My mom was so shocked that she didn't speak to us for few days. So many people lost their families, their loved ones.
Believe it or not, the temple build hundreds of years back stayed intact through it all!!

Kedarnath is an actual town in the Himalayas and has been a pilgrimage centre since pre-historic times ( 300 BC ).
The movie revolves around a true natural disaster that almost wiped out the entire town in 2013.
However, astonishingly, the Kedarnath temple did not suffer any mojor damage.
I liked the CGI in the movie. I can literally compare it to The Day After Tomorrow in terms of CGI.

The event was true... A lot of people died and people didn't like the love story angle to it... But cinematography was good... But again making such a disastrous incident movie with love story was not received well with audience...

I think that the main issue is that the story just doesn't work, we stay on the surface of the characters and their past, we can't really buy into the love story... If it had been a great epic love story the film could have worked.
Ya the love story was totally unnecessary. They could have easily make film on Kedarnath disaster.
So thats why bcoz of this bad story this movie sucks

It was a shock to whole industry. Especially the TV industry coz he started from TV and made his way to Bollywood. He was an inspiration for so many struggling artists as well as TV artists who struggle to get a chance in Bollywood. This reaps my heart.

Its a REAL story! It was one of the biggest disaster tragedies! Hundreds of thousands of people died due to this landslide and flood in Kedarnath In North india. Houses were just swept off! The movie is beautiful and the score is even more beautiful!
There is a difference between sau, hazaar, and lakh. Similarly, there is a difference between hundreds, thousands, and hundreds of thousands.

Sushant Singh Rajput was a phenomenon. He along with Sara Ali created a fairytale. In his eternal absence we now understand his true value. All other of his contemporaries created less stir than himself in his this short a period of his acting career. Only he made a head start among his peers. Fearlessly chose dynamic movies, movies that left a mark. Sadly never got his due. Hope he gets every good thing he deserves in his next birth.
Whole city swept and only the temple remained stand still and unaffected. This is why people go there for pilgrimage..

This movie is based(not atrue story but a true event) on the real life tragic event of cloudburst at Kedarnath in which everything that came in the path of enormous amount of flood waters was destroyed but miraculously a huge stone somehow protected the temple thr and the temple which is I don't know how old was still unaffected.....it was nthng less than a miracle how that stone came rolling and stopped exactly in front of the temple saving it from the destruction.....
That's the power of Lord Shiva😍
That was the biggest piece of stone found after the disaster and it stopped few meters ways from the temple and acted as an dam, every modern structure that was built was swept away only the ancient temple stood there without a scratch.
They have decided to leave this massive rock as is, after clean up nobody wanted to remove this huge block, it is still in same position today, i had friends who traveled there and said it is visible from top of the valley. Miracles do happen. No wonder Kedarnath is a Pilgrimage. The Temple itself is about 3000 years old.
Even if the stone hadn't rolled down I'm pretty sure the temple would have stood intact. That's the power of our ancient builders. The municipal corporation today would do well to look into our history and incorporate that today.

Even if you live there, did you go count 15000 people? Or did you just hear some numbers from people who also heard numbers from people and on and on. Numbers like yours are usually MUCH more unreliable than official numbers.
@@Djinner13, we locals estimated this much of numbers because we know how much of villages, hamlets, small towns gone vanished during that calamity. Moreover, the calamity was not limited to Kedarnath but it's showed its presence till Rishikesh which is over 200 km away. Now you can imagine how many people would have affected in that 200 Kms distance.

Kedarnath is one of the most important temples of Lord Shiva, in the state of Uttarakhand bordering Nepal and Tibet. It attracts tens of thousands of devotees every year during the summer and monsoon months.
Every God and Goddess in Hinduism is associated with an animal as their transport - like Devi Durga is associated with the Lion, Lord Ganesh with the Mouse etc. Lord Shiva's transport is Nandi (the Bull). You would have noticed the metal idol of Nandi at the beginning of the trailer when the camera zooms in on the Kedarnath Temple.
Nandi is the symbol of strength and stability. That is why in the flood scene towards the end, when the Muslim boy Mansoor holds Mukku's (the Hindu girl) hand to prevent her being swept away, he holds a horn on Nandi's head. That scene is so beautifully symbolic - Nandi is rock-solid and will never let anybody down.
That fleeting scene is so beautiful. Just wanted to share a thought on this.
Sara Ali Khan's grandmother told the media that Sara's interviews are much more enjoyable than her movies. Her off screen personality will leave you in awe. She's probably the only one actress who has more female followers than males. That's how lovable she is.

Finally. Kedarnath floods flattened villages around but nothing happened to the main temple. A rock rolled down and placed itself right behind the temple and the flood water got diverted. Kedarnath is worth a visit. Dangerous roads but totally worth the peace you will find in the end.

The Kedarnath Temple was saved in the flash flood by a giant rock known as Bheem Shila. It came hurdling down the mountain with the flood and stopped right behind the temple and split the water in three parts, two flew from either side of the temple and the third one right above it like a cobra's hood.

The Indian army conducted massive evacuation process by airlifting 10,000 people through choppers in a very volatile climatic conditions in kedarnath.

Kedarnath is situated in my state and it is one of the most beautiful valley of Uttrakhand. He is also one of my penates or main god. We were shattered and heartbroken to witness this calamity that happened in our home. But our devotion love and commitment stayed the same for kedarnath. I really suggest u to visit kedarnath, if you come to visit India sometime. You will take home many beautiful memories of this place❤️

The location itself is Kedarnath. This is an actual incident. In 2013, a cloud burst happened in Kedarnath, nd it literally flooded the entire state of Uttrakhand. 16,000 people lost their lives in that tragic disaster. And this movie is about 2 people who were there at that moment when the cloud bursted.
Its not a masterpiece in acting but its a movie that anybody will really just adore!!! The story and performance is just beautiful...
Sara ali khan won the best debutant for this role....
The gorgeous male lead is Sushant Singh Rajput. He was in PK and he played MS Dhoni in the movie, did a great job in both places.

This disaster happened a few years ago when the 'holiest' ganga river flooded directly on the temple ,whole town was destroyed except for the temple which stood majesticly unharmed!!

I liked the movie. It notified me of the disaster and I was able to look into it later on. I really loved the love story. Sushants character was adorable. Arjit in the background only made it more worth it

As you've read in so many comments, there was a huge flood in Kedarnath, which is a pilgrimage place for Hindus in in the Himalayas. Many people died and many more displaced along with huge destruction of property. This movie is about that but intertwined with a love story, like Titanic I suppose.

I was disappointed by this movie. It had a great potential but really stayed on the surface of the characters (short film, it could have been way longer and they had the bases to explore the past of the characters so I don't get it...). It's ok to watch but it leaves you unsatisfied and it's easily forgettable.
Sara Ali Khan (Saif's daughter) did okay for her first film but I much prefered the acting of Sridevi's daughter in *Dhadak* , the Hindi version of Sairat (her first film also released last year).
Sushant is a great actor. I'd recommend reacting to *Kai Po Che* and *Shuddh Desi Romance* to see more of him.
Also this was co-written by Kanika Dhillon, and she also wrote *Manmarziyaan* also released last year and this one was AMAZING. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, with Taapsee. Hopefully you can react to it soon! :-)

There was a crazy cloud burst in the state of Uttarakhand(where Kedarnath is) a few years ago, and it caused massive flash floods and loss of life and property.
