I always smile a little when Julian pulls out the cinder blocks! All this high tech, hand crafted hardware and then… cinder blocks! Keeping it simple and the right tool for the job.
I didn't even realize those were buildings until you cleaned them. The cleaning in this painting might have been one of the most transformational I've seen. Fantastic work.

Just to mention that there's probably an audio issue during the sequence starting at 21:50, the sound of the voice-over is too low (or the sound of the hammer too high) it prevents us (at least me, on headphones) from clearly hearing the words. For future videos, thought it might help. Thank you for your work.
Yeah normally there would be classical music during the cleaning process. Instead it was basically silent and lots of squeaking from the videos actual audio sped up.

I'm so glad it was you doing the restoration and not any of those others I've seen on YT. I googled her and there is a very good biography on Wikipedia. It's interesting to note that she exhibited in 1925 with Mary Cassatt and Childe Hassam at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
You have the wrong Louise Woodruff! She was a sculptor. This artist is Louise Woodroofe, the painter. Both seem to have spent a lot of time in Illinois, though.

While I don't like clown pictures either it is fascinating to think of her following the circus. One doesn't have to like all of an artist's work to appreciate some of her work, and this picture is a beauty!
I think my favorite thing about your channel is that I really get to take time and enjoy paintings that I'd never otherwise get to see, in a way that I rarely look at paintings on my own. I like her work.
That was my impression too. Julian started cleaning on the top left, and as you said, it was so revealing. To be honest, I am often surprised at how dirty paintings get, and then impressed on how clean Julian gets them. BTW Tiny Dancer is my probably my favorite Elton John song.

Have to admit, when the video started, it was the painting I was least interested in of all the paintings I’ve seen him work on. After the cleaning sequence, I found it to be the most spectacular transformation I have yet seen.

Your work repairing extremely damaged paintings is fascinating to watch. But it was fun to see your method of cleaning a painting with heavy impasto and your different technique for strip lining the tacking edges.
I didn't realize just how dirty that painting was until it started being cleaned. It immediately went from "just nice" to STUNNING- I didn't even realize there was a little town behind the trees until it was being cleaned because it was too dirty for me to see the details. It really is beautiful, I'm so glad it was restored properly.
This piece has such a strong impact when you see it fully cleaned! On top of that, the mice being murdered in the background during the cleaning process gave the piece a perfect ambience of tranquility.

Julian does so much weird stuff in this video that he doesnt normally do. It was really interesting to see him tackle normal problems in different ways. Also, this is by far the most beautiful painting he's worked on IMO.
I think this is one of my top three favorites of the restoration/conservation videos you've done. I am legit envious of your client, as they will get to see its beauty in-person. Watching the colors reappear as you cleaned the painting, and seeing the textures appear from the different angles and lighting you've used was amazing. The second I saw all of the texture in the paint from the artist brush strokes I started to get worried but then I remembered that you are Baumgartner Restoration and you can handle anything an artist throws your way

I've always wondered how to clean this style of painting. I always thought most methods would either damage the paint, not be effective, of get stuck on ridges of paint and make it worse.

This painting is a good example as to why I am a proponent in cleaning these paintings, because we get to see what the artist wanted us to see! Such a beautiful painting now! When the artist stepped away from her painting, I bet it looked just like this: bright and beautiful.
17:00 Truth is, with this type of heat activated adhesive more is not better. You need to follow the manufacturer's instructions, especially regarding time and temperature. Too much of either will cause the adhesive breakdown and become inert (not sticky) and there's nothing you can do it bring it back. You have to start over. I keep thinking back to all the paintings I remember seeing in my life in the state of this one before being cleaned. Just seeing that difference kind of makes me sad of all the beautiful art i've missed out on because of lack of conservation.

Like many of the commenters, we loved the look of this painting. It would be interesting if you linked to biographies of some of these artists when they are known. Doing some research this morning I discovered the artist and I attended the same high school and worked at the same university, I had no idea she was a local product of our community

Tobacco tends to leave a yellowish stain (experience from cleaning a smokers house). This gray grime looks like coal soot.

I knew from the thumbnail this would be amazing, but watching the dirt being removed is astonishing. This painting is so vibrant!
I paint very textured and thickly on my canvases so its good to know it can actually be conserved in the future if they are ever worth conserving.

17:00 Truth is, with this type of heat activated adhesive more is not better. You need to follow the manufacturer's instructions, especially regarding time and temperature. Too much of either will cause the adhesive breakdown and become inert (not sticky) and there's nothing you can do it bring it back. You have to start over. I keep thinking back to all the paintings I remember seeing in my life in the state of this one before being cleaned. Just seeing that difference kind of makes me sad of all the beautiful art i've missed out on because of lack of conservation.
The artists would be unhappy if not angry at the condition of their creations.

I was unimpressed until you revealedall that amazing color. Not only did you reveal the color and the wonderfull brushstrokes, but the composition which couldn't even be seen before! That was luscious!

Did he forget to add music to the cleaning section or did I miss some sort of explanation for it? Still beautiful to watch, but audibly different. I heard the constant squeaking noise and thought, that's unusual and then I thought, "there's normally beautiful music during this part, I wonder what happened".
Like many of the commenters, we loved the look of this painting. It would be interesting if you linked to biographies of some of these artists when they are known. Doing some research this morning I discovered the artist and I attended the same high school and worked at the same university, I had no idea she was a local product of our community
