Now.... about that grind...
It gets easier to swallow when you realize that these upgrades are just a result of you playing the game, rather than the end goal itself. I think some people view having a fully engineered ship as the "end game" but in reality, they're just things that make the rest of the game a little smoother/easier. If you don't enjoy the gameplay, you aren't going to enjoy it more after upgrading as much as possible. That grinding mentality will always lead to burning out and giving it up. I hope that makes sense. It can certainly get discouraging when you make the decision to engineer out your modules, only to realize how long it will take you to achieve that. Personally, I don't recommend newer players focusing on engineering for quite a while. After you've played for a fair bit, you'll have a feel for what play styles, ships, and builds you actually enjoy and then by the time you commit to a path, you'll likely already have the majority of the necessary materials to get the upgrades you want. Much less "work" to do it that way then to focus on optimizing your ship before you know what to do with it. Elite Dangerous isn't a game that you win. It's a spaceship simulator. It's entirely about the journey. The only real "destination" is wherever you're currently flying towards, but you get to decide where that is and you get to set the pace. Don't rush it.
@@BigDaddyWes That's a great way of explaining it. I'm not super new. I have a few hundred hours in with some engineering. However while you can definitely play the game without grinding, you're also left out of a lot of the game, especially current events. Even after the engineering I've done with my ASP X, Krait Phantom, Cobra Mk III etc I don't even participate in any of the thargoid story or anything else going on. I won't last 20 seconds.
@Recon_19D3x You can't fight the Thargoids solo, but AX weapons are available for purchase, and good A-rated ships working in a wing can hold their own. I know there's some guides about how to attack the titans without engineering, too. Alternatively, you can rescue people from attacked starports. You can also run supply missions to repairing starports. Not being engineered places some restraints and creates extra challenges, but it doesn't absolutely lock you out of current events.

I've been playing almost 500 hours, but aside from an FSD for my DBX, I've been avoiding the engineering grind due to its infamy, although I've been gathering materials here and there while bounty hunting. With the latest update, I've decided to give it a go, but I was confused as to why I'd unlocked Farseer at G4 but could only upgrade my equipment to G1. Looked around in various guides, but I didn't realize you could upgrade something multiple times until I saw your video. Thanks!!
Important work, well done! Engineering is much easier and faster as many a forum dad makes you think. PSA: dont finish the grades, jump to the next one when its unlocked! Farming HGEs is by far the fastest way to gather manufactured, for raws its the limpet & flak method either at crystaline shards or brain trees. For data just scan every ship infront in supercruise or while docking at any station, it will accumilate over time, but for the first upgrades visiting Jamesons crashed Cobra and potentially relogging provides a basic stock. Cant wait to see you do some pew pews with the lads in that FDL 🙂
Yup, I made it a point to call out that you can move onto the next grade without finishing the previous one at @9:40. Saves a lot of time, materials, and frustration. :)
The issue with the various way's of keeping track of what you have vs what you need, isn't updated in such away that it's totlally accurate. It take's a day or two, before the various site's I've utilize, to update my today's data, which will generally change by the time it's updated. Hint or spoiler alert, adding the experimental immediately after doing the first of 5 upgrade's, cause you after pinning the particual modual. Never having to go back and do it later.

Oh well, at least learned something. The farming methods are still a pain in the ass and I don't see the encouragement of normal folk doing those kind of repetitive work for stupid materials. Taking the random portion out seems like it has INCREASED the number of spins. I don't remember ever doing 16 spins to finish a grade 5. Am I misunderstanding something? Is it 16 total from 1 ->5 or 16 spins to complete a grade 5 to fully upgraded?
Mats come easily if you just do some of everything. A little mining, Pew, SRV, DavsHope, Crashed Cobra/Conda, Murdering tourists. Then hit the traders.

Great guide, love the engineer app. Though I now have about 5 different modules at various grades so my shopping list looks quite big and complicated compared to the one you had. Though the app is really worth using :). I noticed this is 6 months old now, and that they were some recent changes by fdev to engineering -- other than more materials found etc, they said something about the wheel click spins are not random anymore. :) Q: If you upgrade a part to level >0 -- e.g. Heavy Duty, lvl 5 -- can you redo the part to have a different upgrade on it? e.g. FSD for range, but then decide you want something else, not range? or do you have to buy a new FSD ?
Yeah, if you have a lot going on at once, it might be a bit much. As far as the changes go, they took out the randomness, so now it just takes as many spins as the grade level. G1 = 1 spin, G2 = 2 spins, etc. Check this out: ua-cam.com/video/yDD3kyBFDLI/v-deo.html

At least they have traders now but even so what a grind! You should be able to scan in game for meter oaks you need instead of using so many outside sources
I'm not sure I understand the choice between rolling a lower grade or a higher grade, if you do too many low ones you get locked out of maxing that module, so you end up needing to buy a new one and start over?
Hmmm, not sure what you mean. You can't get locked out of maxing it out. Every roll of a given grade will get you some percentage towards completing that one and unlocking the next grade. When the next grade is unlocked, you can immediately start on that one. The first roll of that next grade will automatically complete the previous grade. Hopefully that makes sense.

Everything you need to know: Engineers are another interesting mechanic that doesn't work properly. 90% of the improvements proposed by engineers are useless. The ships in the game are still not adapted for engineers. The result is an FDL with huge shields that doesn't pay for it at all, and an FDS that simply doesn't get shields and is 100% useless. As an example. 🎉

It can. Each modification has perks and drawbacks, and some of them do result in a higher power draw. Depends on the modification.
