Good information I've been living in SE Asia for 20 years and Cambodia is my base to travel around Asia. I live on under $900 a month including health insurance. I have an ER visa which costs $280 a year and is multiple entry, very easy qualifications. I live in the Capital Phnom Penh and everything is walking distance from my house, bank, groceries, market, hospital, clinics, gym and entertainment. I like the big city because almost everything available in the west is here and the best medical care in the country.
Plus an International Airport is 10 minutes from my house.
The area I live in is safe and very quiet at night, no Karaoke, parties stop early, no roosters or barking dogs. Cambodia is home to the friendliest people in the world.
Foreigners are treated very well and respectfully. I could go on and on, but Dan has done a good job and accurate information.
Covid restrictions have been mostly lifted, no masks or vaccines are required at this time, but indoors a lot of people still wear masks and vaccines were mandatory here before so over 90% of the population are already vaccinated.
I'd recommend you have $1500 a month to retire in Cambodia and that would allow you to save and have money to enjoy discovering all SE Asia, which in my opinion is the most beautiful place on the planet.

Can some people in Battambang understand Thai language? I am considering retiring this year in Chiang Mai(a town I know since 1992),Vientiane(where Lao language is close enough to Thai) or somewhere like Battambang.I can speak some Thai(probably more than average Falang) and would want to learn local language but have heard that there are some areas in Cambodia(probably because of Thai T.V shows) where Thai is understood.Just wondering.Thanks.Cheers
You are absolutely right. Much of Cambodia was inside of Thailand until the French showed up. So there are a bunch of people that understand Thai in Battambang, whereas not as many in Phnom Penh. But as to the numbers and likelihood, I am blind. I am a more typical Farang. English only. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Best, Dan

When I started traveling there was no internet. Sometimes my family wouldnโt hear from me for 6 months. I was a hard core traveler. There was just travel books. I miss the old days when only the hard core traveled but oh well !!!!!!!

Can you cover the political situation in Cambodia a bit? I think itโs relevant here with the current group of thugs running the show. Imagine retiring in Cambodia in the early 1970s or Iran in 1978.

I met Qiang Hui on Tinder in 2016 in Malaysia. There are websites and UA-cam channels with alleged experts on how and where to find love in SE Asia, but I recommend not listening to anyone. People are people all over the world. Just come here, put your profile up on Tinder, and start meeting women. Just be yourself and a girl that appreciates your qualities, good and bad, will eventually show up. Stay away from girly bars because they are not interested in relationships, their goal is to make a living. Just make sure to get to know someone very well before talking about marriage. NGO stands for non-government organization. It means a group of people that are dedicated to providing some form of improvement in the quality of life for a place in the world where people, animals, or the environment is not presently getting enough attention from the international or local community.
