  • Our bodies use the hormone insulin to control our blood sugar levels, and when cells resist insulin’s effects, it can lead to diabetes. Unfortunately, many of the common tests used to detect insulin resistance are less accurate in people from certain racial and ethnic groups. That’s why Amrita Ramanathan, a postbaccalaureate research fellow in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is helping to develop a new way to detect insulin resistance that might work better for those individuals. With an earlier and more accurate diagnosis, they can start taking steps sooner to lower their chances of developing diabetes.
