where I work, driving Petroleum tankers.......they had an 'older' truck with a DD15 that was doing a re-gen every few hours. All the drivers told management...........and were ignored.............until one day the re-gen went on for so long, the build up of heat MELTED all the air lines and electricals under the cab............. On another occasion a truck that was always doing prolonged re-gens drove into load gasoline at the terminal, and the severe heat on the muffler shield of the Kenworth set off all the fire alarm, infra red cameras!!! LoLz. Thanks again Warren for a really good detailed video on the system, its layout and how it works! ))
I am not in the equipment or truck repair business (I'm and electronic tech) but love watching Warren go through his troubleshooting process, and sort out all the issues!
We had international maxxforces we had to loosen the inlet pressure tube on the dpf, start the regen, and then tighten it up if it got over 50% soot level. Cheers to helping me learn about machinery when I can relate it to the fleet side!
Once again you've shown the difference between a Mechanic and a Fitter. A fitter just installs new parts but a Mechanic finds the problem and fixes it "Amen" Great couple of videos on the 6155m 👌👍
I work at a school bus garage. I understand your pain with diesel emissions. Mercedes MBE 900 lockout for a forced cleaning at 150,000 miles and Cummins ISB at 200,000 miles or 6,000 hours. On the Cummins, we send out the SCR out with the DOC and DPF.
Good to see it come alive, without costing a arm and half a leg lol. Sounds like a good running tractor. The pressure sensor for the three point may go away with the other arm back on. Good job trouble shooting. I hope things go well with the tractor rental. Next thing you will have a hay squeeze for rental, jcb tellahander and one semi tractor with a lowboy trailer. Just thinking forward for you Warren lol. Have a great day.
Great to see that the tractor is in good hands know! I love your videos I'm 15 and love to see how machanical stuff works and you explain things really well, thanks mate great video👍🏼
i got a 67 ford truck for free because the previous owner couldn't get it ti shift into gears. he put a brand new clutch on and installed it but it wouldn't shift so they took the transmission back out and put it in the back of the truck and forgot about it for a few years. i got it to get it out of his yard. i looked at the brand new flywheel and there was no pilot bearing. put a heavy duty one in and installed the trans and it works great.
Been pressure washing the doc and dpf's on the trucks for years and has always worked. This JD has the same fuel management as the Cummins Isc, Isl, and new X15 engines. The early ones use to coke up the turbo bad when they had regen issues.
Congratulations on solving that mystery. Not surprised you did. You usually have at least some minimal guidance from the owner's complaints or descriptions of symptoms they had encountered. Starting off with just your observations and constructing a likely scenario, testing your hypothesis, then narrowing the focus until the exact problem is identified and resolved is your forte. Almost always you prevail quickly, but you always prevail in the end. As for " how they get their money" question, I surmise they borrow it. They just can't borrow the brains.
Panther piss. Man that reminds me of my grandfather. His piss of choice was wd. He retired from jd. Was a mechanic for them built our family a farm on the back of a 6030 I need to restore. Live the videos, keep em coming.
You are amazing - brilliant - you should have your IQ done am sure you would be at gifted level. Really enjoy your videos, learn amazing things I never knew existed. THANKS
Ive reset soot levels in "critical" levels before and done a regen. Just gotta make damn sure I babysat it to make sure it didnt overheat. Depending on manufacturer the soot level isnt always determined by differential pressure, but fuel usage and time/load calculation, so sometimes its not as bad as indicated. Usually a spec somewhere to get an idea if it truly is a critical soot level by seeing what exhaust back pressure or diff pressure is at WOT.
Awesome job Warren. Good luck to you and your partner on starting this business. Anyone renting machinery of you will know they are getting a sorted out and good running machine.
I think this is starting to become common. I’m a field tech for Deere. Today I had this issue on a cane harvester with a 9 liter. Kept saying soot level high after I did a DPF recovery on it and the customer had done two parked regens on it before I got there but the differential pressure was 0.0 and it passed a SCR verification test. I fooled it with service advisor by going through the “DPF removed and professionally cleaned” reprogramming and the codes went away and the machine ran fine afterwards. Last month I had a 9510R still having high soot level codes after a service recovery with the same exact situation as the cane harvester. There was actually a DTAC solution for the problem.
You know that completely slipped my mind Warren! Case has what you call a forced regen the Sam thing you did there. All the ones with out a doser have that option and some with dosers do to. The only think that’s bad about a forced regeneration is it can destroy the DPF. If it’s plugged bad but yours ran fine no derate problems. We both mist that one because I know you know about forced regen’s. I wish theses manufacturers would get together end use the same terminology. It was good to clean it anyway. It does clean the ash out and lengthens the life.
Interesting system 👀 glad I'm not having to diagnose and fix it , interesting to see the computer work to👍⚒️. You got good hands and and good mind 👌⚒️ good luck with the rentals .
I was in 6 different CAT dealer shops with problems associated with the REGEN cycle on a 3406 in the 2011 and 2012 time period. None of them could produce more than a temporary fix and I kept losing power, if I ran the REGEN cycle the engine would tell me it needed to REGEN 25 miles after a REGEN. Pulling 13 axle oversize limits the places you can comfortably break down.
Really great lesson on DPF regent and the calibration trick. Interesting to learn about using injectors for regen vs that inlet or port or whatever it is. I would follow your advice about which system is better. But Deere engineers probably have a fairly good regent system with the injectors. Really an excellent lesson.
In the Komatsu world we change them every 4500 hrs and yes you are right smaller engines use the injectors for dosing, and we tell them to run them like you stole it , and cut down on idle time this helps also sometimes if you tell the machine you put a new DPF in it will alow you to regen it and yes you do need to change oil at the right intervals and a low ash oil also , hope this helps , thanks for the video
Small light duty diesels inject on the exhaust stroke to start a regen. It helps to take a metal marker and draw a line thru the clamps DPF and DOC for installation.
Well, come to find out, the regen was an easy fix. But damn, it was scary there for a bit. Not changing the filters and the oil, I'm thinking oh no, what did you get yourself talked into. But so far everything is kinda a okay. Nice video Warren.....
Only thing left to do now is to sit down and hammer out an agreement on paper re the rental business before going any further. It's not uncommon for partnerships to end poorly regardless of how long or well you think you know each other. Best of luck.
Never been a fan of this new stuff, too much can go wrong over a simple thing. Older equipment either it ran or it didn't and were always quite simple to work on. Cheers :)
If that regens like a 6.4 your oil is going to be full of diesel fuel. We all know how that story ended. I hope john deere did a better job then Ford and International with that type of regen system. I don't know how many engines I replaced on because of the fuel contamination in the oil. Theres a reason why I own a 7.3 lol. Great video as always.
No issues as the 6.4, the biggest issues is john deere cant build an egr cooler to last. We will see if the lastest one last. Have there issues on the scr side but warranty has fixed most of it. Overall the deeres are far superior to the cats, but isuzu still has the best systems. I work on equipment side of deere.
@@tonicetobegood1 How's that Kool-Aid, kid? Talk about "the company line"! You must have been a Chevrolet engineer--thinking that recirculating exhaust back through the engine to "try" and burn more exhaust the 2nd time around, which causes the engine to run less efficiently. Then, let's add some extra fuel to the exhaust stream to make the DPF hot enough to burn off the soot created from not burning the fuel efficiently in the first place.
@@tonicetobegood1 If you work for a Deere dealership how are you determining that they are the best? Not trying to start a fight here, just wondering. But also need to be able to service what we sell so we'll see how that goes.
I only work on Cummins and they fuel on the exhaust stroke. What I call the dosing valve is the injection valve after the DPF and before the SCR. It injects DEF.
The DPF system in these looks like it uses a similar system to a lot of the light auto vehicles, no doser or injector after the turbocharger to initiate a burn, just uses the injectors to add unburned fuel to the exhaust. The vehicles with these systems in light automotive require light throttle conditions at moderate rpm for 15 minutes or more to initiate a burn off. Usually this is a highway run above 80kph for 15 minutes to 1 hour. I can see equipment like farm vehicles that have this system falling foul to a blocked DPF because the are either at idle, under load or parked up straight after work is done, kinda like people that do only short trips in their diesel Audi. Luckily we have a company here in Australia that has a DPF restore product, you pulse atomise the product into the DPF through a temp sensor or differential pressure sensor port and then run the engine at 3000rpm for 20 minutes until all the soot is ejected from the exhaust. After that is done, a regen is done and you reset all the learned values to zero or conduct a DPF replacement function using a scan tool. Last but not least is an oil change as a heap of soot and fuel will pass the rings. It is soooooo much easier than remove and replace a DPF and whole lot less expensive.

Most of the manufacturers have rules for there dealers that at stage 5 they must either send the DPF off to be baked or replaced. That's probably what the previous owners probably ran into, even though its not to expensive to have them cleaned.

We have the same problem with the rental Kubota track skids we have. Always having regen issues because customers run them low and slow. Guy at Kubota told me to tell the to run em wide ass open😂
That hard shifting transmission is caused by the front wheels turning backwards while the rear wheels are turning forwards. It's a very common problem on this model.
Yes deere runs in cyl doseing on there smaller engines The bigger engines have doseing injectors Deere has many problems with there egr coolers and burning coolant causing regen issues and plugging the dpf up also
For the hood, the folks that make that Fiberfix tape also make a Fiberfix flat patch lookin thing that might could be rigid enough to fix that part on the hood for ya.
It seems when i use diesel laptop for John Deere it’s always kinda funny with the regen. I had the same issue with a jd 4046. The temps wouldn’t climb to where they should be. I took off the dpf filter blew out the doc and dpf with air. Installed. Level went from a 5 to 4 and the temps got around 1100. It worked. Sensitive bull shit .
Have you got a bit more info on how you cleaned the DPF as we've got a 6150r which won't regen and i'm hearing various ways of cleaning the filter (soap & water, pressure washing, solvents, heating gently with oxy propane etc) and is there any risks (damaging sensors) with these methods, also we have repaired thermo set plastic parts (john deere hoods, massey rear fenders etc) using a 2 stage method which is to V the crack or break (you can do both sides but isn't nescessary ----- we do hidden side if possible for the finish but rear fenders it's outside so we don't have to disassemble) clamp or tape parts together then run liquid superglue into the V and apply baking soda powder that'll immediately cure the glue (you can apply successive layers to build up material or even act as a filler ---- word of caution don't touch it as it's curing as it gets hot enough to burn skin) let it thoroughly cure for some hours, usually it's pretty strong but brittle so we follow this up with fiberglass tissue cut into little strips applied in a papier mache style which helps make the area more rigid and vibration resistent.

Hello there. My 6115m just gives the ECU 3720.16 code and only does forced regen trough the dealer's computer but the code never goes away after 3h regen and is flashing yellow. Very frustrating that I cannot start the regen trough the OBD. Any chance you have the video where you actually cleaned the DPF? Pretty scared to pull it apart. Any sensors that can break inside or around that honeycomb? Great videos and really appreciate your work and patience with these highly "electronised" machines..best of luck! Seb.
As previously commented, it would seem like if you do a regen and not change the oil it could send the engine into a piece of scrap. Would it seem logical that they have you do the maintenance on the tractor to protect your investment!
13:20 bang on warren.. The Mercedes sprinters and there Vito commercials ps I’m based in 🇬🇧.. They on regen also over fuel on the exhaust stroke, which leads to lots of fuel mixing with engine oil FACT Mercedes deny this fact.. Wake up there full of shit.. Top bloke warren all the best renting to your customers
Looks to me like you need to set up a schedule for checking the lease tractors. ie: Someone to drive by and check if the lease required maintenance is being done. Pretty obvious Owners, Lessee, and operators are ignoring Maintenance. That would ruin a small leasing Co. pretty fast.
Hey warren, is there a difference between your laptops forced regen process versus the one I would do in the tractors menus? Apart from not letting me do the tractor’s on board one when the stop light is on, does it think differently when you plug into it or does it do the same routine?
Hey I am a John Deere tech thinking of going on my own what computer program do you use if you don't mind me asking and about how much is it to purchase and update
RAFAEL SAENZ You just go ahead and keep believing that. ALL new tractors come with a DPF. If you live where nobody cares, it’s easy enough to get it deleted and tuned. But as far as buying new, there are no tree hugging state and non tree hugging state versions of new tractors. It’s a Federal law, states have no say.

Not necessarily true. The 6170r have same engine and use a doser valve. Also the Duramax uses hci or doser valve.

Mid-range cummins does the same thing as far as no doser. Just uses the injectors to over fuel and superheat the exhaust.
Seb.
Thanks for the lesson I WONT buy any thing with DPF I WILL TRY TO FIND AND RESTORE OLD IRON
Warren do an oil analysis on that sucker.
Nice country you live in Warren!
Warren, what does the exhaust look lime coming out of the exhaust pipe during regen? Great vid, thanks.
Man how fast do those tractors go in road gear??? It looks like it's making 50 mph??
Good job!!!!!👍👍👍👍
Hey Warren, could you explain your acronyms, us that are not heavy equipment mechanics have no idea what a Dpm is,or stands for. Thanks
No issues with that crap where I live we repair that shit once never breaks again , lol
How hard would it be to eliminate the dpf system if it is like the 6.4 wouldn’t it just be a recipe for disaster.
That's a nice tractor
More money than brains. Probably the number one cause of all sorts of equipment getting damaged all around the world.
Do you recommend a diesel fuel additive if so what you see works best
Doesn't the 6.7 Cummins use the injectors for regen like that too?
As previously commented, it would seem like if you do a regen and not change the oil it could send the engine into a piece of scrap. Would it seem logical that they have you do the maintenance on the tractor to protect your investment!
13:20 bang on warren..
The Mercedes sprinters and there Vito commercials ps I’m based in 🇬🇧..
They on regen also over fuel on the exhaust stroke, which leads to lots of fuel mixing with engine oil FACT
Mercedes deny this fact..
Put scheduled maintenance at the renters expense in the agreement. You get revenue from the work and have the opportunity to check the machine.
Hey warren, is there a difference between your laptops forced regen process versus the one I would do in the tractors menus? Apart from not letting me do the tractor’s on board one when the stop light is on, does it think differently when you plug into it or does it do the same routine?
Farmer Connor it’s the same regen process. You just need the laptop when your locked out from to many failed regen attempts
What computer system do you use and what programs and cables? Where do i get one been fighting with 8130
My question also
Texa diagnostic . I am a dealer.
@@westerntruckandtractorrepa1353 can i get some information please you can email it to jneviuspete@yahoo.com
Sure
good evening . can't you reset the shoot level with your program and then start regeneration?
Great video
Hello, what diagnostic equipment do you use?
Warren where did you purchased your software .
Might want to pick up a new wiper blade at some point. 😉
where do you get your coveralls? i would like to buy a set
Hey I am a John Deere tech thinking of going on my own what computer program do you use if you don't mind me asking and about how much is it to purchase and update
Shouldn’t you know?
No doubt S. A.
Jim Lahey Different programs cost different and work different. I doubt he is able to get John Deere OEM software
@@mahart40 shouldn’t he know that....
Was it my eyes but is there a stud missing where the turbo bolted to the manifold?
If you look closer, the 2 in front are on underneath, the 2 in the back are on from up top. It's an over/under design mount.
@@Ham68229 Yeh, i see what you mean, they build them different in Germany for the UK market. Cheers.
That's a great thumbs up.
Maybe it is worth selling it? Or flipping it to a 250-300hp one?
Wth !!
DPF on farm tractor???
That's crazy
I'm farmer in Colorado
No one has ever said the EPA isn't crazy...
RAFAEL SAENZ
You been under a rock somewhere? New farm tractors have had DPF since early 2010's
@@ralfie8801 only on Tree hugging States
RAFAEL SAENZ
You just go ahead and keep believing that. ALL new tractors come with a DPF. If you live where nobody cares, it’s easy enough to get it deleted and tuned.
But as far as buying new, there are no tree hugging state and non tree hugging state versions of new tractors. It’s a Federal law, states have no say.
@@ralfie8801 equipment only needs DPF if it's going to haul a load on a federal road "TRUCK DRIVERS "
