Just got this game a few days ago and was so excited, but watching some of the tutorial videos was a bit confusing, I jumped for joy when "Watch It Played" popped up on my feed. Rodney's videos are always a pleasure to watch and made everything click! To break the game down in its simplest form, anything you want to do in the game is activated by a white box action. That's it! Nobody went over the details, like Rodney did for how to deal with the discard deck reshuffle towards the end of the game, cleared up so many questions! (Because of have the Classic Edition Core I am going to use the Save cards, Discard Deck and Action Deck, as placeholders for where the two decks should be located, so I wont get confused if the deck is Action or Discard) THANK YOU!!! Already watched this one twice and will be showing this to my friends when we first play. Keep up the great work!
Very kind of you to leave such a nice comment. So nice to hear you’ve found the videos helpful, that means a lot and I hope you all have a great time playing!
great explanation on how the life force works, doing a solo run trying to learn how to play this game and its all relatively easy to pick up life force though had me baffled from the explanation in the rulebook
Just got this game and was hoping for a visual aid on playing. Thanks Rodney! You break the rules down to an understandable format. Which I very much appreciate as I am more a visual learner. 😁
Thanx again for another SO helphful How-to-play video. I have question: When you reveal a terrain (i.e. card A), you put all the necessary cards (exploration and adventure) in the correct place. If you resolve an exploration card, you replaced it with the proper adventure card (i.e. card B). However, this new adventure card may contain a exploration/adventure card at the side that matches the previous terrain card (card A). What are we going to do? We ignore it if you want to go back to card A? I refer to the exploration/adventure cards notification at the left side of the left card (3). (p.18 of the rulebook). Give GeekGold Tip
Unfortunately I shot this title long enough ago I don't recall from memory, and I lent my copy of the game to a friend, so I'm not able to look the answer up for you I'm afraid. Very glad you liked the video, and sorry I couldn't help further!
Go 3 players max. 4 players is very constrained. 4 players there is less every player can do: less card they can have active and less cards they hold onto. You'll find this aspect really annoying when you see certain cards give a continuous generic bonus while you have them in your hand (which I feel are better than ones that give persistent bonuses while they are in play). There is absolutely no chance to split the group, ever which may be in a few instances a good idea to do. Yes there are more cards in the idea deck, but you are going to be discarding many of these since character cards are more useful to be played than used for their success stars and going back to hand limits, its going to suck having to discard cards character will definitely want/need. 3 players gets you the most amount of cards to be playable in a session, and enough character diversity for flavor. This has been tested by my group. Also don't play with the The Path of Repentance expansion unless you know the directions you need to take to complete the curses you are undertaking. The added time limit isn't worth the small amount of benefits it provides for an unknown curse adventure. This was a mistake I learned the hard way.
Played through the introductory course (Crystal's song) yet but already love it! Thanks for the tutorial (I watched it to be sure I understood the rulebook clearly)
Watch It Played thank you. It is very addictive: I already passed the bridge to the sand location in Voracious goddess but then failed to go over the bridge back for a short hunting - thus needing to start from the new beach tile again :(
I don’t understand normal skill action cards. I made a 35 deck but still have another 30 action cards left over with ‘7’ on each one. Mostly items, What happens with those? How do you tell the difference between these cards amd what should be added to the initial 35? Should there be any 7 cards in starting deck?
It might be helpful to watch the set up instructions as explained in this video and then tell me which part (with a time stamp), is causing the confusion. Then I can pin-point how I can help clarify.
Thanks for this video, it’s short and way better than those lasting 1+ hour where they don’t get to the point, make several mistakes, repeat themselves numerous times etc. Nevertheless there are a few things I still am wondering about, the rulebook, FAQs etc - as far as I read them - don’t give clear answers about the following aspects: 1) Hand card limits in a 2pl game: 3 blue with normally max 2 additional => combined items = 9 *** 3 green *** 3 single special items, like a tribal necklace for example, makes 15 *** red hand cards got no limit besides 1 card for each single injury & co. But what about fish etc., is there a limit for food? If fish counted as an item like a tribal necklace, would those nice special items have to be discarded??? Would make zero sense to me. Or should house rules apply? 2) what happens in this case: Action deck is empty, reshuffled and from now on a curse ends the game. Let’s say, 8 cards have been drawn, now after gone fishing 6 cards could be put back. Do those 8 cards remain where they are = they are out of this game, or are they shuffled back into the discard pile, and 6 cards (=> fish) form a new action deck? 3) there are some special items, but they got infos that do not fit. For example there is a metal piece (die 1). It says: - discard after use - using this item does not lower the durability of this item. So discard or not? But if being discarded, the other info does not apply at all. Looking forward for any help that really clarifies these points.
Hey Sten, let's see if I can help. 1) I'm not really sure I'm understanding the math calculation you're doing tehre for the card limit (you may have it right, but I can't really decipher what you're saying). This is the card that tells you your limits: ua-cam.com/video/roqzI03WDGI/v-deo.html 3 green, 3 blue, and 3 items (and each item can combine 3 cards within each item). Food is an item, so it will count against your item limit. 2) I "think" this is the answer to your question? ua-cam.com/video/roqzI03WDGI/v-deo.html 3) Individual card effects I refrain from getting into (I cover too many games to go to that level of detail). I'd suggest asking that question on the BoardGameGeek forums pages for the game. Hope that helps a bit!

@@WatchItPlayed thanx a lot for your help - as you suggested I asked on BGG and received immediate precise replies to all 3 questions. Wish the rulebook would be more precise or there would have been at least a more detailed update online (pdf file).
Thanks, Rodney! I pulled the game from my shelf again after receiving the final expansions that made my copy complete and I was grumbling about opening the rulebook again to refresh my memory. It felt like my own curse was lifted! You rock man and I would go off to explore a continent with you any day. Game on!
If I discover a new item card that I want but I am already using the max amount of items I can, can I discard any items in play to make space for this new item I just discovered??? How does this work?
Regarding the banners that add the numbers to the card you can pick. Why would you do this, do they generally give better results or are they for if you know what the numbered cards already do from previous plays?
What are your thoughts playing 2 characters controlled by a couple each (two characters controlled by 2 players each character)? Because this have works better with 2 players on the board.
When drawing cards to see if you were successful with the action, and you decided to use an item (let's say the action required you draw 3 cards for 3 successes and you decide to use an item to add a success), if you are successful without the use of the item, do you still have to consider it spent or can you afterwards decide not to have used the item? (Assuming the item's effect only augmented the number of stars present. If it allowed fewer cards to be drawn I imagine that would necessitate committing the item and decreasing a pip value before you reveal the action cards). Thanks in advance!
I shot this long enough ago that I don't recall what I say in the video and I loaned my copy of the game to a friend, so I can't easily look this up for you. That said, if the video doesn't say you recompose the Action deck, then I'd feel confident that you don't.
9:35 If we take the draws required for an action down to 0 but the action we are attempting to do still requires 2 successes, does it automatically succeed or are you unable to attempt it because you, in effect, aren't drawing any cards to determine success (unless we choose to draw ourselves)? I hope that made sense haha.
That question does make sense :) If the action requires stars, then you must get those stars - so if you reduce the cost to 0, and choose not to draw any cards, then you will fail (unless you get the stars from something else, like playing a skill from your hand that provides stars). Here's what you need to remember, just because the cost has been reduced to 0, it doesn't mean you can't draw any cards - 0, becomes the "minimum" number of cards you have to reveal. That is why the cost is written as 3+, it means you have to draw 3, but you can always choose to draw more (to increase your odds of success). This is covered in the video, but hopefully that clarification helps.
I have a question regarding the rules: (Small spoiler alert) There are specific cards that can only go in your inventory e.g. ‘350’ cards. Say you get one of these cards and put it in your inventory under a walking stick with 4 pips. If you then use the walking stick four times (thus making the durability of the item 0), must you discard the 350 card underneath? Note: The 350 card does not have a keyword
I do by best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
I don't have my copy handy to check for you, but looking at that screen shot you time stamped and counting the cards I see there, I'm confident it's the amount I mention in the video.
I bought this based on the fact that I could play it solo or solitaire as someone put it-and not just because of quarantines but also because it’s hard to get folks together. One look at the rules and I went running to UA-cam. Thank goodness for Watch it Played! I read that independent board game publishers are struggling in this new normal-if you can buy a game directly from them, now’s the time to support folks that make great games like this. Thanks, Rodney!
Excellent rules teach as always, Rodney. Hope this video will get many more gamers playing this wonderful game especially since the Classic Edition is available. My wife and I have been playing this a year now, including the expansion, and about to wrap up our last curse. It has been a wonderful journey, only superceded by our Mechs vs. Minions campaign.
Similar to many I had put this away after a session played wishing Rodney had done a Watch It Played video. Broke it out today, felt fuzzy and went to see a tutorial on UA-cam and BAMMMM....there's recently uploaded WIP video....Thanks Rodney!
Just found out this channel and it is amazing!! Congratulations on all your hard work. I know the video was a while ago but I wonder if you could help me with a question: before seeing the video I was confusing items with skills (was drawing the skill blue cards and assuming it was an item ready to use, and that the crafting number was supposed to combine items. But that creates a new question for me that I think I didn’t see it answered in the video: is it possible to craft the item again before it reaches zero and being discarded, increasing the number of the dice? I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance :)
@@WatchItPlayed Thank you so much for the quick reply :) Just a shame that once you create an item your character “kinda forgets” how to create it again, but thats the mechanics 😁 And once again: amazing work 👌
First, sorry for my english. I have two questions about the rules. I play thd game solo. The journal card said i can keep 5 blue hand cards, 4 Green hand cards and 4 objects. But, if my objects are blue handed, they count to both límits? The other question is about meat. When i find meat, the card always have a dice with a number 1 printed, only one use. But, is It an object and count to the limit of 4? Thank you.
New question, please. When you have two or more cards in the same object column, and two or more of these cards are useful for the same action, can you apply all the benefits or you can choose which one to use?
15:22 why would I do that, I don’t understand this. I don’t know either card, what sense does it make to take 089 instead of 084? Are higher cards generally better?
I think it helps to think about it thematically. If you look at the card on the left, you can see a body of water you're trying to cross. If you don't have the raft you an try to cross it, and you flip card 084. However, if you have the raft, you can use that as you try to cross, and you get to draw a different card. Thematically, which do you think is likely to give you the better result?
Hi Rodney, great work as always. Something I’m not sure about: In the video, it says that if an item being used has a star-7 on it, it turns 7s from the action card into successes. I think it’s the other way around. A revealed 7 from the action card will « enable » a star-7 from your item. Some items have multiple star-7 that need to be enabled with multiple 7s from the action cards being revealed.
Hey Nexus, the way I'm saying it here in the video is correct. I run the videos by the publisher before posting to check for things like this, in case I slip up :) Hope that helps!
@Watchitplayed Hey very good video I have been playing my copy and loving it! Quick question though, when you combine items do you have to pay the items crafting cost before combining it ?
Edward Godin Glad you’re enjoying the game - yes, you still need to pay the crafting cost, if any, even if you’re combining. Think of it of crafting that added element.
Hi Rodney i have the game also and you did explain it very good but i think you missed one thing or maybe i did miss it in you video. But i can't remember that you did explain that when you draw for example 2 or more cards from the action deck too see if you got the required stars or not that you can keep one to put in you hand if you have room left. Also if you deside to keep a card, and it is also a action card with a character face on it then only the player who play's that character can have that card.
Yes, I did explain that you can collect a card from those revealed, but didn't mention that you cannot take someone else's pictured skill card - will add that to the description.
OK, I was playing it wrongly (thinking one "7-star" grants max one success for "7" icons). Bolas item confused me, as it has two "7-star" icons. Had to look up BGG after reading your comments :). This changes things significantly! :D Thanks guys!
Did’t know you can use both benefits from a single card. Does it count as a double use of an item? (In this case I see that the life jacket will be discarded after both benefits are used)
It does not count as a double use of the item, though, as you mention, in the case of the second benefit in that case, it doesn’t matter, because it banishes the life jacket, if used.
This box sounded empty on flip 🤪 after seeing the great video to the end, I actually rewinded to the beginning just to hear if it sounds like hundreds of cards are trying to haunt you. I missed the introductory of hunting in your video. Sure, it’s basically just a way of handling the cards as already explained but it might help people to see one way of getting back action cards. Not sure if you left it on purpose to not spoil it. I got mine in the first Kickstarter run, went all-in on the second print run and still very much like it. I still have to win it in normal mode though (getting better). Sadly it doesn’t come to the table as often as I would like and I only played it solitaire twice. It still feels great even if played alone and the game balances it pretty nicely with the amount of items stackable. „The crystal song“ expansion that you had in the video is now sold separately, right? I find it a nice introductory with even a small bit of replayability. It’s a lot shorter than the voracious goddess and helped me to bring people into the game without having to interest them for a multi-session adventure right from the start. So it might be a good investment if any one reading this had problems like me getting it to the table 😎
Hi Rodney. Thank you so much for this video. I am trying to decide between 7th Continent and Mage Knight for my next game, mostly for their solo versions. Both would be a big jump for me in complexity though, the hardest game I have now is Terraforming Mars. Any thoughts or suggestions? Do you think one would be more overwhelming or worthwhile from the other given where I am in the hobby?
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for!
This looks great. Sort of complicated, I will have to watch again. But this does look like a possible for the wish list! A little like Treasure Island meets Mansions of Madness. We like Cooperative games, and this looks like one that would be a lot of fun with a lot of playability. It makes the list!! Great video, of course!!!!
@@WatchItPlayed I agree. I can't find it on Amazon, just the full version. I don't know if I have the money for that. I just added Blood Rage, Western Legends and finally got Res Arcana into my collection. I probably get the full version, but I may wait a little bit. But I definitely think it fits in our collection. We are still living in two cities for a little bit longer. We have been playing games over Facetime. Most of the time, we have been plying Architects of the Western Kingdom, which Therese got me for Christmas. We brought that and Taverns on the cruise and played those two a lot. Also played Dead Men Tell No Tales a few times and Watergate. We found a lot of the crew were interested. Apparently, they play board games and were glad to talk with me about some of the titles I knew about. I totally sold them on your channel and BGG, and Dice Tower. They had never heard of you or BGG so it was very welcome news for them!!!!!
Considering how concise your vids generally are, the fact that this one took over 1/2 for you to cover makes me afraid this game is a bear to get a handle on. Have you played it much?
I played it a bunch. It's just a longer video, as it has more rules than games with shorter videos, so see if it seems appealing to you and worth the learning time.
All the expansions mix into the main boxes of cards. They'll be numbered and you insert those cards in order. If you want to delve into an expansion, choose the curse with it. If it's a non-curse expansion, you might stumble on it during any adventure. I would suggest (and others have) adding all expansions you have from the get go.
@@MrDLUA-cam They go right by same numbered cards. The only exception is gold cards which should always go after green cards. When you go to draw a card and there's multiple green cards to draw from you pick one randomly. It represents branching paths, so if you have to restart, things may not happen exactly as the first runthrough. I had this happen within a few explorations of my second start, where I thought I knew what I was going to discover, but something else entirely happened.

Very kind of you to say Steph - glad you enjoyed!

I had kind of given up on playing my copy of this monster. Thankfully Rodney made this how to play. Now I can get back to it...excited!
Enjoy your return to the continent!
Just got this game and was hoping for a visual aid on playing. Thanks Rodney! You break the rules down to an understandable format. Which I very much appreciate as I am more a visual learner. 😁
So glad to be able to assist. Have a great time playing!
Thanx again for another SO helphful How-to-play video.
I have question:
When you reveal a terrain (i.e. card A), you put all the necessary cards (exploration and adventure) in the correct place.

Unfortunately I shot this title long enough ago I don't recall from memory, and I lent my copy of the game to a friend, so I'm not able to look the answer up for you I'm afraid. Very glad you liked the video, and sorry I couldn't help further!
The way the box slide on... Satisfying 33:03
Great teach as usual. I definitely want to try and play this at a convention this year before I think about getting it myself.
@@Kindlesmith70 Thanks for the tips!
Played through the introductory course (Crystal's song) yet but already love it! Thanks for the tutorial (I watched it to be sure I understood the rulebook clearly)
Awesome - have a great time playing Alex!
Nevertheless there are a few things I still am wondering about, the rulebook, FAQs etc - as far as I read them - don’t give clear answers about the following aspects:
1) Hand card limits in a 2pl game: 3 blue with normally max 2 additional => combined items = 9 *** 3 green *** 3 single special items, like a tribal necklace for example, makes 15 *** red hand cards got no limit besides 1 card for each single injury & co.
It says:
- discard after use
- using this item does not lower the durability of this item.
2) I "think" this is the answer to your question? ua-cam.com/video/roqzI03WDGI/v-deo.html
3) Individual card effects I refrain from getting into (I cover too many games to go to that level of detail). I'd suggest asking that question on the BoardGameGeek forums pages for the game.
Hope that helps a bit!

If I discover a new item card that I want but I am already using the max amount of items I can, can I discard any items in play to make space for this new item I just discovered??? How does this work?
You'll find the answer here: ua-cam.com/video/roqzI03WDGI/v-deo.html
Regarding the banners that add the numbers to the card you can pick. Why would you do this, do they generally give better results or are they for if you know what the numbered cards already do from previous plays?
Hi Neil, it's been long enough since I shot this, that I would need a timestamp to remind myself about what aspect of the game you are referring to.

Take 27, and ACTION 0:11
What are your thoughts playing 2 characters controlled by a couple each (two characters controlled by 2 players each character)? Because this have works better with 2 players on the board.
I think that could certainly work.
You still have to consider it spent, even if you didn't end up needing the item. As you say, you have to commit.
When you clear the board because requestedby the game, e.g to move from one isle to another, can you also recompose the action deck?
21:50 so if I combine items which don’t share a keyword the second item basically just looses its die?
Right, it's gains the effects on the bottom, but does not have its durability increased.
I have a question regarding the rules:
(Small spoiler alert)
There are specific cards that can only go in your inventory e.g.
@@WatchItPlayed Thank you
Smooth box flip!
3:28 I have only 31 skill cards in my deck. Do the 4 curse cards also count as skill cards?
I don't have my copy handy to check for you, but looking at that screen shot you time stamped and counting the cards I see there, I'm confident it's the amount I mention in the video.
I bought this based on the fact that I could play it solo or solitaire as someone put it-and not just because of quarantines but also because it’s hard to get folks together. One look at the rules and I went running to UA-cam. Thank goodness for Watch it Played! I read that independent board game publishers are struggling in this new normal-if you can buy a game directly from them, now’s the time to support folks that make great games like this. Thanks, Rodney!
You're right Quinn, lots of folks struggling, and nice when you can help put a little more pockets into the companies directly. Have fun playing!
Well done, as always! Thanks for another great video, Rodney!!
Thank you kindly Dwight!
Cheers Rodney
And to you Darren!
I was really glad to see them release this Classic edition and hope it brings many new people to the game.
Thanks for the video. Can characters join in for move action? If so, do they have to pay 2x or split the cost?
Hi Javier, I usually do my best to help with all rules questions, but I lent my copy to a friend, so I can't easily look this up in the rules for you.

Glad you enjoyed!
Just found out this channel and it is amazing!! Congratulations on all your hard work. I know the video was a while ago but I wonder if you could help me with a question:
before seeing the video I was confusing items with skills (was drawing the skill blue cards and assuming it was an item ready to use, and that the crafting number was supposed to combine items. But that creates a new question for me that I think I didn’t see it answered in the video: is it possible to craft the item again before it reaches zero and being discarded, increasing the number of the dice? I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance :)
Hey, glad you're enjoying! And good question: no, you can't re-craft it before it breaks.
@@WatchItPlayed Thank you so much for the quick reply :) Just a shame that once you create an item your character “kinda forgets” how to create it again, but thats the mechanics 😁 And once again: amazing work 👌
I see 7th Continent content, I click like. It's that simple.
what are your overall thoughts on trading card games?
I'm not sure this is the place where I would discuss that. Maybe during a live show if you wanted to tune in and ask there?
Rodney usually tries to keep the video comment section free of his own thoughts since that’s pretty objective. Try it on Twitter or live shows
Look for his live shows and social media; this isn’t the place for his opinions.
Alright will do, thanks for all your help guys
First, sorry for my english. I have two questions about the rules. I play thd game solo. The journal card said i can keep 5 blue hand cards, 4 Green hand cards and 4 objects. But, if my objects are blue handed, they count to both límits? The other question is about meat. When i find meat, the card always have a dice with a number 1 printed, only one use. But, is It an object and count to the limit of 4? Thank you.
Cards you have as objects do not count against the blue and green hand card limits.
@@WatchItPlayed thank you so much. How about the meat? must i count them as an object??
@@fjpaez1976 Yes, if it's face up on the table in front of you with a die on it (even if it's just a 1), it's an object.
@@WatchItPlayed thanks a lot!
New question, please. When you have two or more cards in the same object column, and two or more of these cards are useful for the same action, can you apply all the benefits or you can choose which one to use?
HO man where was this video when the Kickstarter came out! You're the best Rodney, but man this would have saved me so much time and confusion.
Thanks for the kind words - wish I'd been faster with this :)
Thank you!! I was waiting for your tutorial
I hope you find it helpful!
@@WatchItPlayed Ok, I see. I was just thinking about the numbers, which didn’t really make sense to me. Thanks!
Watch It Played Ok thanks. That makes it a bit easier. The Bolas is a weird case then. Could it be that it gives two successes for each 7 revealed?
Nexus 6 Yep, exactly!
one hell of the greatest invention of mankind ! this commands the developer to win the novel prize ! he deserves it !!!

Hey very good video I have been playing my copy and loving it!
Quick question though, when you combine items do you have to pay the items crafting cost before combining it ?
Edward Godin Glad you’re enjoying the game - yes, you still need to pay the crafting cost, if any, even if you’re combining. Think of it of crafting that added element.
Time to blow the dust off this one. Thank you Rodney!
Get back to the continent!
Terrific video as usual Rodney!
Thank you Bala!
11:50 Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think each "star-seven" symbol only adds one success, no matter how many sevens your draw.
That's not correct, Rodney describes it correctly. The way I think of it is number of 7s * number of 7stars = successes.
Ogre Crusher has it right.
OK, I was playing it wrongly (thinking one "7-star" grants max one success for "7" icons). Bolas item confused me, as it has two "7-star" icons. Had to look up BGG after reading your comments :). This changes things significantly! :D Thanks guys!
So the seven star in bolas counts each 7 a success twice?
Sorry, I should’ve kept reading the comments as nexus has answered the question, great videos has always!
Great video as always. I especially like your shirt!
Bought the game in November and couldn't get all the rules right... now it's time to take it off the shelf it seems ! Thanks Rodney
Let's see if we can make that happen!

@@WatchItPlayed I agree. I can't find it on Amazon, just the full version. I don't know if I have the money for that. We are still living in two cities for a little bit longer. We have been playing games over Facetime. Most of the time, we have been plying Architects of the Western Kingdom, which Therese got me for Christmas. We brought that and Taverns on the cruise and played those two a lot.
I think this video is the push I was needing to play my KS copy.
Have a great time adventuring!
Yes!!
A great tutorial thx
You're very welcome!
I've had this game since the KS, and have no clue how we are supposed to add in the expansions.
@@ryanb6074 But what about cards that have the same numbers as the ones in the core box? I opened one expansion, and came across this issue.
@@ryanb6074 Got it. Thanks for taking the time to clear that up for me. I really appreciate it!
I appreciate Ryan helping with this!
