Many say his drumming was "sloppy," but his *dynamics,* and the way he could *steer* and *drive* a song were *anything but.* His very unevenness was spot on, absolutely perfect!
This is Kieth playing on one song from an over two-hour concert. And he played at this intensity throughout. Even if other drummers could copy his licks, most would find it impossible to match his energy level and endurance. I saw Kieth play four times. Taking those memories to the grave. He made that much of an impression.
The genius of Keith Moon's playing style was that he never hit the drums cleanly, like most drummers do..he pounded the life out of them, and that gives them that deep, powerful resonant sound that gives his playing so much power. And it was a reflection of his personality, that uneven but risk-taking effect...that made his playing so unpredictable, spontaneous and always on the edge. He played on the spot and in the moment...not by practiced techniques as conventional drummers do. He didn't just play the beats...he played the main riffs along with the Pete and John. Which made his performances so alive and energetic and furious. No wonder he couldn't be replaced...but because that kind of playing was Keith Moon and there is only one Keith Moon. They were the genius trio together....the brilliant powerful triad that was the Who, along with Roger's unique vocals. When Keith died...it was the end of their era, and the Who...period. Just like that...
Hi Linda: You described Keith's playing so accurately. He was unpredictable, unconventional but oh so musically expressive. His bass drum work was also outstanding. I was lucky enough to see him play many times.
Pete and John and Roger with Kenny Jones were still great, and with Zak Starkey they were awesome, but when John died they should have folded the tent.
Probably the greatest drummer in rock, from probably the greatest rock and roll band in the world, at the height of their powers. Fan-frikkin-tastic! Thanks for posting :-)
The greatest drummer ever I wish he didn't pass away. He was and still is the greatest drummer of all time and he was a great time to be hanging out with. The SHIT he used to do a lot of people try to do the SHIT like Moon The loon. I have been listening to Keith Moon and the who since 1971 and it never gets old. GOD bless you Keith Moon the best ever and I have always thought that he was really really great on the song. The song is over there was a guy who was doing all of the who song's and putting them on Facebook I asked him to do the song is over this was a few years ago and the last time I heard from him he couldn't get it down
That, and how he could direct a song, have always been what I've most appreciated about his drumming. the craziness gets the attention, but his natural musicality was what made it really work.
@@MrGb1965 It was the same kit as the tommy kit what gives it that sound is that it is made of birch as were all his premier 60s kits , the next few kits were of mahogany that gave it a deeper warmer sound

You know you are the greatest drummer of all time when people think it's completely inhuman This comment further proves that Keith Moon is the greatest drummer of all time.
You guys are nuts ... He had great energy, but he was far from being the best drummer. Certainly not compared to Bonham. He was extremely sloppy. I love the guy, he's unique, no question : but he was not a great drummer by any stretch of imagination...
I accept your challenge. What part of "young man blues" Isolated drum track would you consider sloppy? I agree, there were occasion throughout his carer that he was sloppy, even to the point of passing out on stage.
@@PurpleWatchtower The concept of "lead drums" is a new one for me. As "a new one" after a very long professional career in music making and producing ... @@christinecollins6648 I really laughed out loud at your comment. First because you either have real bad faith about how Bonham joined the New Yardbirds, or you don't really know the story behind it. The other thing that made me laugh is that you seem to imply that I said that Moont couldn't get gigs. That is absolutely not my point. Jimi Hendrix of drummers, just on another level
Similar to how John was said to be the Jimi Hendrix of bass guitar

Greatest rock drummer of all time
Absolutely dwarfs Gonzo n Baker
So true one of a kind genius

Equal parts fascinating and phenomenal.
Brilliant...The Who are my favourite band.Seen them 9 times.Keith at Swansea in 76....to be fair there are many great drummers in Rock.
All rules thrown out the window. Awesome
Just brilliant! Moonie is second to none.
His drumming is musical in itself -
What ever Keith was on certainly worked well!😊 The Jackson Pollack of the drums..Love it!!
Keith and The Ox both played their instruments like leads.
Flawless playing fully revealed.
Absolutely mad. Brilliant!
Something you don't hear much about Keith was that he also played with dynamics too, as this song proves.
Robert Kess that’s a great point. I picked up on that too and it was a wonderful surprise

What a fabulous comment and absolutely true! Love it!
this drumming scares the shit out of me ... that's a GOOD thing O.O
That beginning. Talk about pushing yourself.
He plays the drums like he’s falling off a cliff. He’s amazing and the best ever!
habcats - I have always thought this live era of The Who always sounded like they were teetering on the verge of a train wreck. Exciting as hell..!!
Entwhistle once said he played drums like he was falling down an elevator shaft, LOL...
Holy cherrybombs, sounds like our Moonie t’me, thanks for popping this up
Please do this for Bargain studio. There’s one out there but it’s not too clear. Thanks
You can hear him screaming in the fills.

It's most similar to timbales technique, like Tito Puente. It's a jazz style. Not total chaos, as it appears. Still has a 1, 2, 3, 4.
@WhatSideOfTheBed DidYouWakeUpOn Also Buddy Rich.
@WhatSideOfTheBed DidYouWakeUpOn buddy actually told Pete T he loved keiths style which is unusual for him... he hated straight rock drummers
Keith was a fan of gene krupa!
People who perceive Moon’s work as chaos, I note , are not adept at discerning understated patterns
He never practiced, all done on the spot. No one will ever come close to Moon the Loon. Rest easy fellow percussionist.
That extra half beat @4.33 is awesome. Just pure brilliance.
Lead drums

Not really isolated drums. More like mixed like a hip-hop record, save that the bass and vocals should be louder. Peace.
With John Entwistle playing through 2 stacks next to you you're gonna get a little leakage.
