    Some of the details of the story differed from what I read, but I think the highlight of the story comes from after the war. Aimo saw a competition in a newspaper, where people were asked to submit their most unbelievable stories from the war. Aimo wrote and submitted his story for the competition. He came in second.

    I dont know where they pulled this story, might be true, but Im a Finn I was told he was a member of a ranger squad that did querilla work deep inside Soviet terrority. He lost his whole team, chucked pills and skiid 400km home without rest.

    • @RoyalMela
      @RoyalMela Місяць тому +87

      Yes, he was a recon squad member. He was patrolling in Salla area, where landmarks are only trees, trees and more trees. They became a target and had to flee, and he took the pills by accident. Pills were very small and they were all stuck together.
      His fellow troops took away his ammo, because he was tripping so hard, and one day he was just missing. He once triggered a booby trap and got blasted by a granade. Still skiied, hit a land mine, damaged his leg, was not able to move. He drank only tea made from spruce buds, and only solid food was a jaybird he killed and ate it raw. Two weeks, 400km and finally he was found and delivered to hospital.

    Honestly, I have my doubts about 'accidentally swallowed dozens of pills in one go'.
    Unless the pills were _very_ small, your throat and your swallow-response simply wouldn't treat "a collection of dry-surfaced objects" as something to go down all at once.
    Even if he had some liquid in his mouth first, you still would have to wait for some pills to be swallowed before trying to swallow the rest.

    • @nirfz
      @nirfz 2 місяці тому +17

      The story i read a few years ago about his incident was quite different to what was presented here:
      this is what i read:
      The reason he took the pills was because his patrol got ambushed and the rest of his patrol died.
      He managed to get to cover, and knew he had to flee somehow. So he opened the pillbottle and tried to get one out (while still under fire).
      Problem was: when you take items from the freezing into the warm there's condensation and when you get back into the cold, the condensation freezes.
      And so the pills had frozen together and he wasn't able to just get one. But under the stress of getting shot at and the need to be quick, he got the "frozen block" of 30 pills in his mouth and ate/chewed that and fled.
      And there was no mention of the encounter of the russians or the setting fire to a room.
      Just that he skiied (cros country skiing not alpine skeeing) the 400km and 2 weeks. The mine and the bird were in the story i read too.
      And he lived to an old age despite all this.

      The pills were very small. They were stuck together, and he of course had no idea what the pills were supposed to look like. I was getting dark, they were shot at and followed, so he took that one big lumb and propably chewed it and ate it. The pills must have been in the package for a long time, went through hot periods near campfire and back to freezing cold, back to warm, back to cold. Perhaps the pills had melted a bit along with moisture and in the end was just one bigger chunk. The metal casing is no bigger than a remote control battery and had 30 pills, which were about the size of half a pea.

      You seem unaware of the realities of television, which this is oringally made for. There are contracts for everything, including broadcasting rights, which the BBC holds. It will only be aired on tv for a period of time, to draw viewers to the channel. After it has run its course it is sold on or put on repeat on Dave. In todays world, that means UA-cam. They post full episodes, just a few seasons old. It is expensive to make a show like this, they want to make their money back first.
      There are shows that air straight to YT now. Taskmaster airs directly on US YT, so they don't have to deal with American broadcasters. In the UK it will be on TV first as it is a commercial show and the channel needs to keep the advertisers happy.
      This clip is to keep the QI channel high in the algorithm, so the full episodes get good exposure. The full episode will eventually be on YT, don't worry.

    Its sad to see how these people who have hardly achieved anything in their life are making fun of a warhero who risked his life for his nation. I would love to see how these people, especially that grandmom and that black dude, would have coped in freezing temperatures behind enemy lines. Probably would not have laughed so much anymore

      It's a funny story, but I agree. People nowadays cant even begin to comprehend what it was like and how heroic these people were.

    I do not know what kind of entertainment program this is supposed to be, but I find this clip distasteful. As a Finn, I admit having heard about this incident many times and I fully understand the interest in it. But this story is about war and there is absolutely nothing to laugh about.

      It's a funny story. Even if it's about war you don't have to be party pooper.

    Wolverines are not native to Finland, either.

      Like said yep European version of Wolverines exists. But in all truth he gave a mighty beating to some Finnish tree, I believe it was birch, thinking it was this animal. Anyhow she got things wrong though. He was skiing under fire while trying to get the pills out which had frozen together due moisture in container and could not get just one. Also, it was twice he got blown up, a mine and at some door to a base which had been abandoned. Anyhow - this story was originally told by the guy himself for a writing competition on war stories a after the fact. The thing is that even though I am a Finn - I don't know why he got just second place and what the hell was the first place story about. That stated - real events though.

      They indeed are. If you are Finnish you should know that there are "ahma"s here.

      Definitely they are native to Finland. They are getting rarer anyway.
