Great man with a humble view! Very kind and giving! He was my Sensei since 1988 Love Thursday nights! Always had a blast! He would ask students that were invited, questions about the technique and if you gave the wrong answer he would just shake his head! The new place in Tenafly was beautiful! Pool table, the works! His wife would make Sushi and students would bring food as well! I remember when I received my first Dan, he said to me, now you begin! I looked at him and wondered what he meant? After I asked around, a few Black belts said, he meant, now you can understand what he's trying to teach! Thank you, Orlando, Alex, Galvin, and few others that where there. Great Bunch of people!
I've only heard stories about the fabled Shihan Kimura. I've had the opportunity to train with students of his but unfortunately not the legend himself. May you rest in piece Sensei
Now I finally understand why that yellow impact pad with the leather front had such a big indent! Training under Sensei Kimura was a fortune that so few of us have, and having being able to talk with him even fewer. Japan 1994, SKF, so lucky to have been there for Sensei Kimura's last international event, we did him proud. Anyone in the UK who wants to learn Shukokai the way he meant it to be should seek out the SKF under Sensei Eddie Daniels. (PS. I stopped training 12 years ago so that's not a sales pitch!). So many organisations claim his name but walked away for money long before he died.
had a buddy who trained under kimura sensei and Mr. tonnie, from a young age for decades. he was a monster in his sport. i remember being told of him going to one of his schools, sparring with another sensei, and breaking the guy's arm cuz the other sensei chose to try to block kimura's kick, rather than getting the hell out of the way. My buddy was trained to the level of a sixth degree in shukokai by kimura sensei, i believe. He's pretty damn strong, even in his 60's.
Held a grading of the members of the Kobe Osaka named after his home town of Kobe in Apollo theatre in Glasgow, Tough only went a small way to describing how hard it was. When it came to sparring he turned a blind eye to the odd punch to the face and actually whispered to me during my match HIT HIM BACK which of course I did and won the fight. The man was exceptionally tall and changed Shukokai making the emphasis on power,. This became a bone in contention when fighting other styles Kobe fighter claiming in a real fight they would beat most other styles. The political fallout between styles still exists and Karate is still not accepted in the Olympic games.
Many Shukokai clubs I've seen around have that same photo of Sensei Kimura above all other photos... Its quite noble. Much respect. I was trained under Sensei Joe Templin and graded to Shodan by Sensei Tommy Morris.
I meet kimura when l was a purple belt back in the 1970 ths . I had the plesure of holding the pads when he demonstrated a Mawashi Geri, it almost caved my chest in...then in the 1980 ths, l had the honour of Kimura awarding me my Black Belt 1sf Dan. I am now a Black Belt 8th Dan, and i still teach the way of Kimura.. He was a true icon in Karate.. Enrico Capaldi Black Belt 8th Dan
Hey, I was reading through these comments and saw this. You can get the punch pads made. If you go to any foam manufacturer and ask them to make you blocks of etha foam 12 inches by 12 inches and 2 inches deep. You then get three blocks and put them in a cover like in the video above or you could get a belt and tie them round securely to use them. Hope you see this and hope this helps :-)
@BayaniWarrior you have to get them specially made now, since he died no one makes them anymore. My father and Mac Albus did a big order of them, so you need to custom order them
Awesome. I studied this style way back as a kid and the power generation this style develops in your strikes is superb. I like those big foam punching blocks he is punching. Can anyone tell me where I can get them?
I took my dan grade under him when i was 14 in sheffield, it was a three day thing, we did a fighting course for the first two days that nearly killed everyone present and on the third day we graded in a 5 hour grading that was the hardes physical thing i had ever done. At the end of the grading Kimura passed me and then Roy Stanhope had a word with him and he failed me by one point, i was gutted. I later found out there was politics going on with between my Sensie and Stanhope.
thats my sensai's sensai too! i have posters of him in my dojo. my sensai has the footage of the begining clip. the one after the replaying punches but before he speaks for the first time.
My Sensie had been told that none of his students would pass their grade on the day by Stanhope, B.....rd It disheartened me so much, as I new i should of passed I took another 10yrs before i bothered to grade again and passed. I had the attitude belts hold your pants up after that, which was a good lesson. Dan grades in those days were few and far between not like now, nowadays it seems like about 5th dan is equivelent to a 1st dan back then. Its embarassing at times. Kimura was the real deal.
Roy was just trying to keep the sport pure, and ensure that only the true Karateka received the highest grades. Sadly it got away from him, and anybody could get a black belt. As you say today's 5th Dan is equal to a 1st Dad.

That moment when you don't realise that he died in 1998...
Remember when he gave out technique sheets to learn?
@@katpuss6564 and draw the little man haha? Do you still have any of them?
Sadly no. Had we realised at the time, would have kept them.
The man was humble and very kind. Died to early! 54 years old. Hackensack NJ home.
I've only heard stories about the fabled Shihan Kimura. I've had the opportunity to train with students of his but unfortunately not the legend himself.

Kimura Sensei was a force of nature - a day does not go by that he does not impact my life - no pun intended...
Kimura sensei took Shukokai to a whole new level. Its just simply amazing to see how it works from the master himself!
Priceless, miss you Sensei and honored to have trained with you.
I love it.. I studied under him in the early 70s in Hackensack New Jersey. Memories. He made me laugh all the time. great man
Now I finally understand why that yellow impact pad with the leather front had such a big indent!

+Epic Miller Sensei Tani. Strength has nothing to do with it. Torque, technique, and he wasn't in his sixties. Sensei Kimura that is...
He died on July 7th 1995
Jack Law is correct on his posting. I remember when all that happened! Was a good time!
my teacher trained under him for a very long time. Best sensei ever couldnt wish for a better one
wow. it's nice to see sensei Kimura. I heard about him a lot. My teacher studied about 18 years with Kimura sensei. thank you a lot author
Did a 3 day fighting course with him in Sheffield and then a black belt grading of 4hrs, nearly killed me and i was only 14 at the time.

Had the opportunity to train with Sensei Kimura 40 years ago in Hackensack, NJ. Was amazing. RIP.

Little Tommy Morris.. I remember him well. The heart of a Lion. No fear, no matter how big his opponent. Tough as they come

Do you still teach Japanese commands?
I met the man back in the 70's, fantastic teacher and good to see my old instructor Eddie Daniels feature so much in the video :)

Had to fight everyone in the Dojo.. first. To show we had the strength and stamina to be a Dan.
This must be the son of my old teacher from the 60's. Same exact name but the style has changed slightly.
I believe Shigi's dad was a chess player.
thats my sensai's sensai too! i have posters of him in my dojo. my sensai has the footage of the begining clip. the one after the replaying punches but before he speaks for the first time.
My せんせい is in the video at 3:29 :O hahaha the Japanese says sensei
